Orange County Government, Florida(ORLANDO, Fla.) -- More witnesses are expected to take the stand Saturday in the trial of Casey Anthony, the mother who is accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter Caylee in 2008, a day after witnesses testified they smelled human decomposition in the trunk of her car.

Anthony's father, George, said he discovered maggots and smelled "something that you never forget" when he opened the trunk of his daughter's car.

Caylee Anthony was last seen alive June 16, 2008, but wasn't reported missing until July 15, 2008. Her remains were found in December of that year.

George Anthony along with wife, Cindy, arrived at a tow yard on July 15, 2008 to retrieve the Pontiac Sunfire that Casey Anthony had abandoned.

"That particular smell whenever you smell it, it's something that you never forget. It's a very distinct odor," he said.

He did not find any dead bodies, but a bag full of trash and maggots. Forensic evidence in Anthony's car will be key in the murder trial, experts have said. The car tested positive for chloroform and human decomposition and a strand of Caylee's hair was found in the car's trunk.

Friday morning's testimony about Casey Anthony's car marked a shift from days of former friends and family testifying about Casey Anthony's behavior in the days she knew her daughter was missing but hadn't alerted authorities.

Cindy Anthony ultimately called 911 that day to report Caylee was missing and that her daughter's car smelled like there had been a dead body in it.

Simon Birch, the supervisor of the tow truck company that removed Casey Anthony's abandoned car while her daughter, Caylee, was missing, also testified Friday that the car smelled like a dead body had been in it.

Casey Anthony Trial: Mother Gets Emotional During Testimony

The mother of Casey Anthony, the Florida woman accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter, broke down in tears today during her daughter's murder trial.

Cindy Anthony choked back tears as she described a playhouse built for Caylee, Casey Anthony's daughter, who was not seen for a month before anyone reported her missing in July 2008.

"It's patio stones, it's the square patio stones, we made like a four, we didn't want her to be on the grass when she was sitting in there playing," she said.

The prosecution asked Cindy Anthony to outline what kind of life Caylee Anthony was living at her grandparents' home with her mother, Casey.

At one point during the testimony, Cindy Anthony asked the judge to take Caylee's picture down from her monitor so she could try to testify without crying.

Cindy Anthony also outlined day by day, all of the lies and excuses that her daughter, Casey Anthony, told her, as to why she couldn't talk to her granddaughter.

Casey Anthony told her there'd been a car accident or she was at work or was in Jacksonville.

Caylee Anthony was last seen alive June 16, 2008, but wasn't reported missing until July 15, 2008. Her remains were found in December of that year.

Cindy Anthony's testimony comes a day after witnesses testified they smelled human decomposition in the trunk of Casey Anthony's car.

Earlier in the morning, ex-boyfriend Tony Lazzaro testified that Casey sent a text message that said, "If they don't find her, guess who gets blamed and spends eternity in jail."

"I put my hand up to the glass to shield the sun and look through the windows. At that point, I did notice a fairly strong odor emanating from the vehicle," Birch said. "The instant flash in my mind was, whoah, I know what that smells like."

Birch, a 30-year veteran of the towing industry, told jurors that he can tell the difference between the smell of human decomposition and the smell of garbage.

Birch said that when he and George Anthony opened the car door, "the smell came out very instantly … very potent. It was eye opening…. In the back of my mind, I said to myself that' s the smell of decomposition."

TIMELINE: Caylee Anthony Case Captivates Country



December 12, 2008

On June 19, 2009, the autopsy report was released in the death of Forida toddler Caylee Anthony. Caylee's mother, Casey Anthony,23, is currently in jail and charged with murder in the case.

Caylee lived with her grandparents and her single mother, Casey, as seen in exclusive photos, many taken by Casey herself.

Following is a timeline of the events surrounding the little girl's disappearance and the investigation of her mother:

June 16, 2008 Caylee seen for the last time. The little girl's grandfather George Casey later tells police that he saw Caylee as she was leaving the house on June 16. It is the last time Caylee is reported to have been seen alive.

June 30, 2008: Casey Anthony's car towed. The family car Casey Anthony had been using was found abandoned in front of an Orlando, Fla., cash advance business and towed away. When the towing company called Casey's parents, Cindy and George Anthony, they became concerned. Casey reportedly had told her mother that she was going on a "mini-vacation" to Jacksonville, Fla. Cindy Anthony later discovered that her daughter had been staying with a boyfriend.

July 15, 2008: Caylee Anthony reported missing. Cindy Anthony called 911 and said, "I found out my granddaughter has been taken, she has been missing for a month." Casey Anthony allegedly told her family and police that she had not seen her daughter for 31 days and had launched her own investigation. In one of three calls placed to 911, Cindy Anthony said, "I found my daughter's car today and it smelled like there's been a dead body in the damn car." Cindy Anthony later retracted that statement, and the Anthony family rallied around Casey.

July 16, 2008: Casey Anthony arrested. Casey told police that she left Caylee at the apartment of a babysitter named Zenaida Fernandez Gonzalez, and that both were missing when she returned. Police found, among other discrepancies with her story, that the apartment had been vacant for more than 140 days. Casey was arrested and charged with child neglect.

July 22, 2008: New revelations at bond hearing. In a bond hearing for Casey Anthony, detectives revealed that they had found strands of hair that looked like Caylee's in the trunk of the Anthony family car, and that cadaver dogs had smelled human decomposition in the trunk. Bail was set at $500,000.

July 22, 2008: Casey Anthony called "person of interest." Officials said Casey Anthony is a person of interest in her daughter's disappearance and they were treating the case as a potential homicide.


Search for Caylee Continues
July 24, 2008: Grandmother reports sighting of missing Caylee. Cindy Anthony told reporters that Caylee was spotted in Georgia, but police could not verify that claim.

Aug. 9, 2008: Caylee's third birthday. Birthday came and went with no sign of the missing child.

Aug. 17, 2008: Bounty hunter offers bond. The arrival of a Californian named Leonard Padilla added to the intrigue. A veteran bounty hunter with his own reality show, Padilla claimed he'd been contacted by Casey Anthony and would post her bond.

Aug. 21, 2008: Casey Anthony out of jail again. Casey Anthony was released from jail after Padilla posted her bond.

Aug. 30, 2008: Casey Anthony returned to jail. Casey Anthony taken into custody on new charges, including petty theft.

Sept. 1, 2008: Police said they believe Caylee Anthony is not alive. The Orange County Sheriff's Office issued a statement saying that based on evidence that wasn't yet public and FBI tests, it believed "there is a strong probability that Caylee [Anthony] is deceased."

Sept. 5, 2008: Casey Anthony released from jail.

Sept. 25, 2008: Babysitter files lawsuit. Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez, the woman Casey Anthony reportedly named as a suspect in the case, filed a defamation lawsuit against Casey.

Sept. 29, 2008: Casey Anthony returned to jail. Casey Anthony was arrested again and returned to jail on multiple charges including child neglect, lying to investigators, petty theft and use of a forged check, but wasn't charged in conjunction with her daughter's disappearance.

Dec. 16, 2008: Defense team is not allowed access to the crime scene during an emergency hearing. For the second time, Judge Stan Strickland denied a motion by Casey Anthony's defense attorney to gain access to the area where the bones of a child were found.

Dec. 19, 2008: Caylee Anthony confirmed dead. Police announced that the results of DNA testing confirm that the remains found belong to the little girl.

Jan. 23, 2009: George Anthony leaves suicide note., Police discovered the grandfather of Caylee Anthony despondent and possibly under the influence of medication and alcohol in a Daytona Beach, Fla., hotel, his attorney told ABC News. Police also discovered a five-page suicide note that Anthony had apparently penned in the hotel.

April 13, 2009: Prosecutors announced they plan to seek the death penalty for Casey Anthony. In a reversal, prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty against Casey Anthony. In December, the state's attorney's office filed court papers indicating that prosecutors would not seek the death penalty in connection with the first-degree murder case.

June 16, 2009: One year anniversary of the last time George and Cindy Anthony say they saw their granddaughter.One year after Caylee Anthony's disapearance, George and Cindy Anthony's lawyer, Brad Conway, said the couple does not know the truth about what happened to Caylee, but he knows of no theory in which the Anthony's daughter and Caylee's mother Casey Anthony is above suspicion. He also said Casey Anthony would likely take the stand in her own defense at the trial, which could be at least a year away.

Prosecutors to Seek Death Penalty in Casey Anthony Case

Prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty for Casey Anthony, a Florida woman accused of murdering her daughter, a spokeswoman for the state attorney's office said today.

In December, the state's attorney's office filed court papers indicating that prosecutors would not seek the death penalty in connection with the first-degree murder case.

In a notice of intent filed today, prosecutors said additional information has become available. The filing says that "sufficient aggravating circumstances exist to justify the imposition of the death penalty," according to the Orlando Sentinel.

A spokeswoman for Jose Baez, Anthony's attorney, said in a statement, "This is not a death penalty case. We will do whatever is necessary to defend Casey Anthony from the state trying to take her life. We already have death-qualified defense lawyers on our team and are prepared for a vigorous defense."

Anthony, 22, has pleaded not guilty in the death of her daughter, Caylee. She is scheduled to go on trial in October.


Frustrating, Curious Investigation Into Caylee Anthony's Disappearance
The child's remains were found Dec. 11, less than a quarter-mile from the home she shared with her mother and grandparents.

The case started with a frantic emergency call from Casey Anthony's mother, Cindy Anthony, in mid-July.

On the tape, she is heard frantically telling emergency operators, "I can't find my granddaughter. … There's something wrong. … I found my daughter's car today and it smelled like there's been a dead body in the damn car." Casey Anthony then got on the phone and reported she may have a missing child.

Cindy Anthony later retracted that statement, saying that the smell in the car could have been from garbage.

As investigators quickly learned, this would only be the first of many twists and story changes in the curious case.

Lies, Half Truths and Incomplete Information

In the original version of events, Casey Anthony reported her missing to police, saying she had dropped the child off at a baby sitter's house June 9. When she went to pick the child up, both the child and the baby sitter had disappeared.

Casey Anthony's parents both corroborated the story until a bond hearing July 25 when Cindy Anthony said that the last time she saw the child was not June 9, but June 15, and that she had just been confused.

When police questioned Casey Anthony about her daughter before her arrest, they say she misled them multiple times.



The Phantom Baby Sitter in Casey Anthony Case

When she took police to the apartment where she said baby sitter Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez lived, they found that no one had lived in the apartment for five months.

At that time, investigator Yuri Mellich of the Orange County police department said, "I am not disregarding that this person may or may not exist, but Casey Anthony's friends and family have never met this person."

After an extensive search for Gonzalez, a woman with the same name came forward in September to tell authorities she had never met Casey Anthony or Caylee. Police cleared her of any involvement.

In a police report, Mellich said that "after several months of investigation, detectives could find no one who has ever met, spoken with or seen any Zenaida Gonzalez who had cared for Caylee Anthony."

Casey Anthony also claimed to have worked for Universal Studios, but admitted later that that was not true.

The Forensics Reports

Scientists found evidence of body decomposition and traces of chloroform in Casey Anthony's car trunk, according to forensics reports released in October.

Lab reports from the FBI found that a hair strand in the trunk showed "characteristics of apparent decomposition." The hair is "microscopically similar" to hair strands found on Caylee's brush, but the report said it could not conclusively say the hair in the trunk had come from the missing girl.

Casey Anthony had been considered a "person of interest" in her daughter's disappearance since mid-July after police reported in a bond hearing that they believed they'd found evidence of decomposition in the car.


Casey's Curious Attitude
But what unsettled investigator Carlos Padilla more than Casey Anthony's imprecise information was her overall attitude.

"She has shown no emotion," Padilla told ABCNews in July. "That's unusual. At the time of the interviews … she didn't seem concerned and that made this case much stranger."

"She spoke to deputies like she was talking about baseball. How do you get through to someone like that?" he said.

But Casey Anthony revealed an entire range of emotion in videos of jailhouse conversations between her and her parents, which were released Dec. 5.

In the more than 300 minutes of video released by the Orange County Sheriff's Department, Casey Anthony is shown laughing, crying and growing frustrated with the investigation and her family's questions.

When Cindy Anthony confronted her with Mellich's suspicions that she had had something to do with Caylee's disappearance, her daughter dodged the issue.

"Yuri [Mellich] has it set in his mind. He thinks you've done something to Caylee," Cindy Anthony said to her. At that point, her daughter got up and, when she returned, steered the conversation in a different direction.

Casey Anthony also said that she knows the conversations are being recorded and "there are things [she] directly needs to say" to each of her parents.

When gruesome details about the discovery of Caylee's remains were released in January, Casey's father, George Anthony, nearly committed suicide.

Re Rosa's comment at the end of the last item, my concern is for the welfare in the present day not only of the twins but for all the children of the McCanns' friends.

I cannot wait for this case to conclude and I really hope they make a film about it soon to show the cadaver dog in action.

How good would it be for there to be a public enquiry in the U.K. about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, at which Martin Grime could give evidence in public, show his film, explain the significance of the dogs' evidence etc. - and of course be cross-examined by the McCanns' barrister, who would no doubt echo his/her client's instructions that these dogs are 'incredibly unreliable'.

Toddler Caylee's Bones 'Chewed By Animals'

The bones of a two-year-old girl, whose mother is accused of murdering her, showed signs of having been chewed by animals when they were found, a court has heard.









The gruesome evidence came in testimony from a professor of anthropology, who helped recover most of the bones, at the trial of Casey Anthony in Orlando.
Anthony has been charged with the first-degree murder of her toddler Caylee.
Prosecutors claim the 25-year-old used duct tape to suffocate the child.
But the defence argues Caylee accidentally drowned in her grandparents' swimming pool in the summer of 2008.
Caylee's remains were found in December that year in woodland near her home, almost six months after she was last seen by her grandparents.
Jurors have been shown photos of the youngster's decomposed skull.

Professor John Schultz told the jury how a team of forensics officers searched woodland, marking with tiny flags the locations where Casey's remains were found.
As he spoke about a bone which he said showed signs of having been "chewed on by an animal," Casey appeared to slump toward one of her lawyers, who wrapped an arm around her.
Forensics scientists testified earlier this week that high levels of chloroform were found in Anthony's car. Chloroform is a chemical associated with human decomposition.
The compound can also be used to render a person unconscious.
Prosecutors have said previously that an internet search on chloroform was conducted on a computer found in Anthony's home.



Casey Anthony denies murdering her daughter


Under cross-examination, defence attorney Jose Baez pointed out that though there were two user-created accounts on Anthony's desktop, that did not mean someone else could have used the computer for the chloroform searches.
The trial has gripped the US and live coverage is being broadcast from the hearing.
Police had to break up a scuffle on Friday among members of the public waiting for a chance to get a seat in the courtroom to watch the murder trial unfold in person.
More than 100 people had queued for hours outside the Orange County Courthouse, some since 1am in the morning.

Today everyone could have seen again what a lying sociopath Cindy (Casey's mom, the grandmother of the victim) is.

Though she will excuse it to the in-crowd as trying to save her daughter, I am sure it is more revenge a "you see Casey, you're nothing without your mom" kind of act.

I do hope they'll lock these 2 up together, 24 h a day in the same cell.

I can't help thinking, when I see this whole sick family, that maybe Caylee is better off now.

No justice for Caylee Anthony either. She didnt put tape over her own mouth, nor did she throw herself in the swamp, someone put her there. Her mother lied and lied about where her child was and who she was with and her car smelt of cadaver.

I dread to think of what that poor child went through before she died.

"It’s time to leave Casey Anthony alone" he or she writes, but I'm surprised the author can't see that's the very last thing Anthony and her team want. It's a year to the day since the verdict and her probation ends the same day or within days, and now they can start making money. Everything I know about Anthony tells me that's what she planned since the moment whatever happened to her daughter happened - I think she knew exactly what she was doing right from the moment her mother called the police and after.

What do you think about the verdict, Zozo? I think I'll buy Ashton's book.

I agree with u about the view of the author or administrator of the blog. Me also i don't agree with her/his conclusions, just i appreciate the way he/she has made available more information and documents about the case.

Do you think it was the death penalty that unduly influenced the jury? Perhaps they would have given different verdicts if there the state hadn't gone for that? I've read a lot more now, including opinions before the verdicts were announced and more people than I had realised did expect not guilty verdicts based on the evidence being mostly circumstantial. I think the death penalty would have influenced my vote had I been on the jury. No death penalty and I'd probably have voted guilty on the manslaughter charge. I'm not sure how anyone could buy the line that Anthony was too terrified to tell anybody what happened to her daughter and where she'd put her body when you watch her sitting with the police quite clearly bargaining with them because she thinks they don't have enough to charge her with murder.

It was a tricky case because most of the evidence was circumstantial but juries have to use their common sense as well I think, and perhaps they would have but for the death penalty being in place.

And there must have been other charges they could have brought that the jury probably would have found her guilty on like concealing a body. Do you know why she wasn't charged with that?

My perception will never change. she didn't report her daughter missing for 30 days! That tells me all I need to know!

Yep, we've definitely not heard the last of this case, Candy. Anthony won't just stay quiet I'm sure.

I watched the TV interview her parents gave after the verdicts and her mother appeared to be pretty much trying to explain her daughter's actions using their religion ("That wasn't Caylee once she was dead, it was just a shell. She was already in a far better place" - or words to that effect, as good as saying it didn't matter what her daughter did with the body after the 'accident' - parallels with the MM case here perhaps) and Casey may well go down that route with her book or books. She'll probably find an audience as well.

It's a very fascinating case and the parallel's with Madeleine's are very striking, particularly with the behaviour of the people involved.

Comparison of the books will be interesting too. I'll read Anthony's, but I'm not buying that one either

The evidence against Anthony was pretty circumstantial, Cristobell. They had no cause of death, no forensic evidence at the supposed crime scene and no motive. But I still think the jury should have used their common sense. It was the same with Ian Huntley, no real evidence of murder but the jury used their common sense there - but would they have reached the same verdict if he'd been facing the death penalty? I doubt it. The death penalty is stupid imo.

I agree with you about the media, but the US also has Fox News. Not so good!

Do you think it was the death penalty that unduly influenced the jury? Perhaps they would have given different verdicts if there the state hadn't gone for that? I've read a lot more now, including opinions before the verdicts were announced and more people than I had realised did expect not guilty verdicts based on the evidence being mostly circumstantial. I think the death penalty would have influenced my vote had I been on the jury. No death penalty and I'd probably have voted guilty on the manslaughter charge. Influence of the death penalty? Maybe or maybe not had influence on the verdict, but for me i think it didn't have a significant influence because the jury had also a choice for a lesser punishment. They were not limited on the death penalty.

It was very strange verdict, to see that she was not charged at all at any of alleged crime at least manslaughter or child neglect; there was so many circumstantial evidences which links her to the death of her daughter. When is just 1 or 2 circumstantial evidences, that will be hard to prosecute but in that case there were so many. Also the Jury should have used their common sense as said Ashton in his book.

Her father and her mother also they played a big influence on verdict, testifying trying to protect their daughter, while in their deepest heart their knew she was guilt of somethings.
There was tensions between Casey and her mother before the disappearance. she was not happy about the behavior of Casey and how Casey looked after her daughter therefore trying to control her which create tension between two women. After the death, I think the Mother of Casey felt guilt of everything to have pushed to far her daughter which led her to commit that crime. She testified trying to protect her so hard, like trying to repair irreparable or on the other side she may been thinking, "we have already lost one that is enough"

Other reason i think she was able to get away of any charge, is because of those many holes or weakness in justice system, which always the defense side want to exploit for the benefit of their clients. Its exactly what does those big lawyers company, like Carter Ruck, when defending big suspect criminals. There has been similar cases where suspect criminals been declared innocent while it was obvious their guilt part of a crime. Similar to the Mccanns case.

One of those weakness, for example is that, imo a suspect always its his/her choice to take the stand. i think in high criminal cases, the judge should be allowed, if finds it necessary, the right to order the suspect to take the stand or the prosecutor team could be allow to make that request to the Judge. (I know also that reason given for not the suspect to take the stand: Avoiding some information she/he could give may lead to her/himself incrimination.)

If Casey Anthony had taken to the stand, there is more chances the verdict could have been different.

The Florida sheriff's office that investigated Caylee Anthony's death
confirmed Sunday that it overlooked a computer search for suffocation
methods made from the little girl's home on the day she was last seen
alive.

Orange County sheriff's Capt. Angelo Nieves said the office's
computer investigator missed a June 16, 2008, Google search for
"fool-proof" suffocation methods. The agency's admission was first
reported by Orlando television station WKMG. It's not known who
performed the search. The station reported it was done on a browser
primarily used by the 2-year-old's mother, Casey Anthony, who was
acquitted of the girl's murder in 2011.


Anthony's attorneys argued during trial that Casey Anthony helped her
father, George Anthony, cover up the girl's drowning in the family
pool.


WKMG reports that sheriff's investigators pulled 17 vague entries
only from the computer's Internet Explorer browser, not the Mozilla
Firefox browser commonly used by Casey Anthony. More than 1,200 Firefox
entries, including the suffocation search, were overlooked.


Whoever conducted the Google search looked for the term "fool-proof
suffication," misspelling "suffocation," and then clicked on an article
about suicide that discussed taking poison and putting a bag over one's
head.


The browser then recorded activity on the social networking site MySpace, which was used by Casey Anthony but not her father.


A computer expert for Anthony's defense team found the search before
the trial. Her lead attorney, Jose Baez, first mentioned the search in
his book about the case but suggested it was George Anthony who
conducted the search after Caylee drowned because he wanted to kill
himself.


Not knowing about the computer search, prosecutors had argued Caylee
was poisoned with chloroform and then suffocated by duct tape placed
over her mouth and nose. The girl's body was found six months after she
disappeared in a field near the family home and was too decomposed for
an exact cause of death to be determined.


Many jurors apparently went into hiding amid public outrage over the
verdict and refused to comment, but two have said prosecutors couldn't
conclusively prove how Caylee died.


Prosecutors Linda Drane Burdick and Jeff Ashton didn't respond to emails from The Associated Press on Sunday.


But Ashton told WKMG that "it's just a shame we didn't have it. This
certainly would have put the accidental death claim in serious
question."


Baez didn't respond to phone or email messages Sunday from The
Associated Press but told WKMG that he expected prosecutors to bring up
the search at trial.


"When they didn't, we were kind of shocked," Baez, who no longer
represents Anthony, told the station. Her attorney, Cheney Mason, who
was also on the trial team, didn't return an email message from AP
Sunday, and his office answering service refused to take a phone
message.


The sheriff's office didn't consult the FBI or Florida Department of
Law Enforcement for help searching the computer in the Anthony case, a
mistake investigators have learned from, Nieves said.
