Madeleine McCann's parents said the search for the missing youngster has been hampered by coronavirus - but they still have hope going into 2021.
In a New Year message posted online today Kate and Gerry write: "Understandably, the investigation to find Madeleine has been forced to slow down as a result of the pandemic.
"It hasn’t stopped however and the hope, energy and determination to find her and uncover the truth remain steadfast.”
The couple also reveal how they have both lost parents during 2020 - two of Maddie’s three grandparents who sadly passed away without ever knowing her fate.
In an personal post on both the official Find Maddie website and the Campaign Facebook page, Kate and Gerry thank their supporters and well wishers for continuing to be by their side.
They write: "We are very grateful for the continued support, especially throughout this ‘rubbish’ year and for all the Christmas wishes too. Thank you.”
Heart doctor Gerry and hospital medic Kate, both 52, from Rothley, Leicestershire, who faced their 14th Christmas without Maddie, open their message by saying: "Goodbye 2020! What a year! One we don’t want to remember but will find it hard to forget.”
They add: “There’s no doubt that 2020 has been tough for most people, and often distressing, with so much loss, worry and isolation. Despite losing a parent each, we are aware we have been more fortunate than many, with our family unit at home and jobs to go to.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has suffered this year. Let’s hope 2021 is a brighter, more positive one. With our best wishes for exactly that. Kate & Gerry.”
Three-year-old Maddie vanished from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in May 2007 while her parents were dining in a nearby tapas restaurant with pals. She had been left sleeping alone with her younger twin siblings.
Kate and Gerry cling onto a glimmer of hope that Maddie - who would now be 17 - is still alive.
In early June last year German Police sensationally named jailed sex offender Christian Brueckner as a new key suspect in Maddie’s abduction.
Prosecutors recently said they were “very confident” of charging him in the New Year and said the public "would reach the same conclusion if they knew the evidence we had.” They are convinced Maddie is dead.
German national Christian B, 43, is currently behind bars for unrelated drugs offences and raping an American pensioner in 2005 in the same Algarve resort Maddie was snatched from nearly two years later.
At the time the prime suspect came to light, the McCann’s said in a statement: "All we have ever wanted is to find her, uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice. We will never give up hope of finding Madeleine alive but whatever the outcome may be, we need to know as we need to find peace.
"We would like to thank the general public for their ongoing support and encourage anyone who has information directly related to the appeal, to contact the police.”
Kate and Gerry's twins Sean and Amelie are now aged 15 and turn 16 next month.
Last summer it was revealed that Maddie’s paternal grandma, widow Eileen McCann from Glasgow, had died aged 80 shortly before the bombshell news about a new prime suspect. She had previously lost her husband John.

Re: Madeleine McCann's parents say search has been hit by Covid but still have 'hope'
If we are to believe that the BKA are correct and that Wolters is responsible for Madeleine's disappearance, we should also believe that they have evidence of Madeleine's death. This article is senseless, if Madeleine is dead, why is there a search? If there is a search, when did it start and what exactly was done?
What is the point of this article?

I find it strange that all the words in the above reports that should have the most meaning seem to be in inverted commas?
Is this some sort of legal thing for ‘Reporters’ or does it mean the words are to be taken as meaning the reverse of what they are?
Is this some ‘secret code?’

Re: Madeleine McCann's parents say search has been hit by Covid but still have 'hope'
So they have their FAMILY UNIT at home ?
I had the vague recollection that they only had 80% of their Family Unit left.
perhaps she should have worded it –
"...we are aware that we are more fortunate than many, since the Germans have kept the focus off us, and we have been able to hide at home with the shattered remnants of what was once our family unit. . ."
The bit about the investigation slowing down is particularly strange, since the entire focus for the year has been on a real, living, named, principle suspect who has relevant previous convictions.
If anything 2020 has seen MORE activity than any of the previous few years.
But she may mean purely the investigation to FIND Madeleine, as she says.
The problem there is that no one has ever tried to FIND Madeleine, only to FIND her body, and identify who disposed of it.
She is right, however, when she says _

Yes, Kate. It does. Not only on this forum but all over the world.

Sadly, I don't think it is very likely that Madeline will ever come home. However, if she did, she would be an adult now and, I would imagine, be definitely extremely p*ssed off with her parents for leaving her to whatever fate befell her. It almost certainly won't be the reunion Kate and Jerry hope for!!

Madeleine McCann's parents reveal tragic Covid twist in search
Ash Cant - Mon, 4 January 2021, 2:58 am GMT
The parents of Madeleine McCann have revealed the coronavirus pandemic has impacted the ongoing investigation into their daughter’s disappearance.
Kate and Gerry McCann shared a message to the Find Madeleine Campaign, where they spoke of how 2020 had its challenges.
“There’s no doubt that 2020 has been tough for most people, and often distressing, with so much loss, worry and isolation,” Mrs and Mr McCann wrote.
The post explained both Mrs and Mr McCann lost a parent this year, though said they were “more fortunate than many”, given their family and jobs.
The coronavirus pandemic also impacted the investigation into their daughter’s 2007 disappearance, though they assured the investigation is still ongoing.
“Understandably, the investigation to find Madeleine has been forced to slow down as a result of the pandemic,” the parents said.
“It hasn’t stopped however and the hope, energy and determination to find her and uncover the truth remain steadfast.”
Parents previously shared tragedy of being away from daughter
This isn’t the first time the family has used the campaign to touch on the pandemic.

“We are very conscious that many families around the world are experiencing similar feelings at this time… being separated from each other and with many having lost loved ones prematurely and unexpectedly,” the parents wrote.
“There will also be many vulnerable people whose situation will have become even more precarious in the current lockdown conditions, with fear, worry and isolation - emotions that we dreaded Madeleine experiencing and which haunted us for a long time - and still do on occasions.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those suffering at this time.”
Throughout the course of the year, the McCanns have expressed their gratitude towards the authorities continuing their investigation.
In June, 2020 police released the name of a convicted sex offender who is suspected of killing Madeleine.
Lead investigator Hans Christian Wolters told the BBC in December last year, he is “very confident” on eventually charging jailed sex offender Christian Brueckner over the British girl’s death.
"If you knew the evidence we had you would come to the same conclusion as I do,” he said.
“What we have so far doesn't allow any other conclusion at all.”
Madeleine was three-years-old when she vanished from her holiday apartment in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz in 2007.

Suspicion
The answer lies with the priest, who said the McCanns let him down, and why a few kilos of granite were ordered and delivered to the church shortly after Madeline was declared abducted. To hide a body undetected, Thermal imaging and Radar would detect a body immersed in Granite. ???
