From the article

"

Two officers have been searching the dirt floor by hand, and brought in a cadaver dog too which is said to have immediately pinpointed areas of interest.
The fragments of bone they found are thought to be human, and could be from a shin bone and forearm. "

Oh dear yet again those "notoriously unreliable" cadaver dogs are shown to be correct!
Thanks Candyfloss roses

Having watched the news on Gerry Adams being arrested in connection with the murder of Jean McConville the newsreader stated that her body was found buried on a beach in 2003 - 30 years after she disappeared.

I can't find any mention of the body being found by sniffer dogs but it would be interesting to know if they helped in the search.

Doesn't look like it.

Snipped from Wiki:

On the night of 26 August 2003, a storm washed away part of the embankment supporting the west side of Shelling Beach car park, close to the site of previous searches,[10] exposing the corpse.[1] On 27 August, her body was accidentally found by members of the public while they were walking on Shelling Hill Beach.[11] Jean McConville was then buried beside her husband Arthur in Holy Trinity Graveyard in LisburnCounty Antrim.[12][13]

And they allowed this comment

But I thought we in the UK were forced to believe these dogs are "notoriously unreliable"...after all we cannot mention where they have been used by British Police abroad and indicated 11 markers unique to the parents of you know who.

Ah, Neil, but there are dogs and then there are other dogs ... Dogs that upset carefully arranged apple carts are the other kind, bad dogs, always unreliable, just like Lassie really.

Another case where the dogs were successful - finding the bodies of two murder victims, body parts buried on a separate site, and also weapons tainted by cadaver scent

Jersey City man indicted in shooting, decapitation of 2 men buried in Atlantic County

Written by R.J. Liberatore Jr.

Monday, April 28, 2014

extract:

The murders came to light Feb. 7, 2013, when state police detectives responded to a report of Ibrahim’s activities at the Buena Vista home.

Police said they obtained permission to search the wooded area behind the house, where a cadaver dog located an area of disturbed dirt near the end of a trail extending from the backyard of the house into the woods. Armed with a search warrant, detectives excavated the spot Feb. 8 and found the bodies. The cadaver dog was used again to find the victims’ heads and hands, which were buried about 40 yards from the original gravesite.Close to the second site, the dog detected the odor of human remains, and detectives recovered a small drywall saw, a pair of scissors and a tire iron, according to reports.
