There was, or even is, a holiday in Colditz where they will treat you exactly like POWs and you get the same food.
Apparently there was a waiting list!

Wonder how long it took Bernies 38 ELITE 'balloon blowers' to get to Lisbon from PDL when the report came over the police radio that there had been an 'abduction' involving 'swarthy, egg headed, wearing nice shoes' Portuguese men with a white van?

Andy must have thought all his crimbos and birthdays had come at once! lol.

I've never seen any confirmation that BHH, at the time heading Merseyside Police, actually "lead" the balloon release. This was only mentioned in articles BEFORE the event. In articles AFTER the event, I've fund no mention of him. E.g.

On June 17, 2002 the 1,000 balloons turned out to be 100 and [snippets]:
