Her FEAR of pain

One thing that always struck me was the statement '...her FEAR of pain.' She was three. How many of us would know that our child had a FEAR of pain at age three. My son is 24. I've tried to think if there was a time during his life that he had a FEAR of pain and I have come up with nothing. I have just asked him when it was he first experienced pain and we have come up with the age 19 (to do with his first foreign holiday with his friends - don't ask!)

How many parents of 3/4 year olds can say that their child has a FEAR of pain? Does this not indicate that the child knows pain? My child certaintly didn't know pain at that age much less FEAR it.

Spot on. This has bothered me much too. She had fear of "pain", so ... she must have experienced it. Children of that age have little or no comprehension of "fear", "danger" and the likes and shouldn't have experience of "pain" in relation to "fear" or v.v. :-(

It occurs at least twice in the diary. In the book it's been changed to 'fear and pain' the editor didn't miss this one.

I always thought it had something to do with David Payne.

Maybe it was another red herring, or a covert caution for DP?

Our daughter had a fear of pain as from the age of 5 months as she had many medical interventions.

I'm very sorry to hear that Nina. I had actually thought that the only legitimate way that a small child should have a fear of pain would be because of medical reasons.

I think that had occurred to several of us, but it takes us back to Turners, XO, and all the rest which we discussed many years ago.

Yes it was tough taking a small child for all the tests and probes she had to endure. At 13 had a kidney removed and is now aged 51 and never looked back.
