Who monitors the monitors?
Not often mentioned on here that the Tanners also had a child monitor and took it with them every night. Well, I’ve not read anything about it anyhow. The obvious question is one of bothering to take it with you every night when you didn’t trust it and physically checked anyway. Though, being charitable, I suppose it might have been considered a back up. Then again, if you’re in the middle of an evening of eating drinking, back slapping and being ‘into one another’, having the monitor there must be a temptation to miss maybe just one round of checks.
Russell O’Brien and his comments concerning his child crying on a physical check, which event their monitor didn’t pick up, is a lesson in the potential shortcomings of child monitors. My point in this post is to throw yet more doubt on physical checking, if there wasn’t enough already. I like this too, from Blacksmith in 2012…who also made comments about the O’Brien Monitor.
“The couple never mentioned to the PJ that they brought a monitor as well, in all their statements they claim that the Paynes were the only ones with a baby monitor. Only in April 2008, in the rogatory interviews conducted by Leicestershire Police, this piece of information appeared. It might seem a small omission, but in the light of possible neglect charges, would have been important. Jane Tanner claims in the rogatory interview that she brought it with her in the evenings and positioned it on a ledge/wall behind her. This was NEVER mentioned to portuguese Police as the released statements show.
And this:
“since O'Brien came back "later", time unspecified. And, surprise, surprise, she discussed her statement with Russell O'Brien who told the police that "He completely corroborates his partner Jane Tanner's statements for the rest of the day."
Anyhow, here you have it.
Jane Tanner Rogatory
4078 “Okay, you know when we spoke and you mentioned about your baby monitor?”
Reply “Mm.”
4078 “And, I’ve got two questions; firstly, did you take that with you every night for the duration of the holiday?”
Reply “Yes, yeah.”
4078 “And secondly, up until the Tuesday night, because that’s as far as we’ve got at the moment, is there anything else with hindsight that you have thought of about, that might have contributed to Madeleine’s disappearance?”
Reply “Err, no I think the only thing that I have thought in retrospect is the fact that I went down to test the baby monitor that first, first night. I mean sometimes I put, because we were worried about the, what do you call it, the reach of the baby monitor, I sometimes put it, there was a wall behind me so I’d put it on there because it was slightly, slightly nearer because it’d start sort of squealing at times so, so that’s the only other thing I can think of because you know it wasn’t, sometimes we wouldn’t have been sitting at, I didn’t have it, so actually sitting on the table it was, it was on the wall where the tile (inaudible) were I sometimes had it on the wall there.”
4078 “Okay.”
Reply “I wasn’t convinced it was really always you know totally working.”
4078 “Visualise it, left and right (inaudible)”.
Reply “And I think our table had moved slightly that way because, as I said, the other nights I’d had the monitor behind me on sort of the ledge where the tarpaulin was, I think there was actually a table between us and the tarpaulin this night, so I think we’d actually gone a bit. I can’t remember, I was talking to Russell about this last night and he couldn’t remember, but I’m sure, purely because of the fact I’d been putting the monitor there, so it was actually, it was only that much nearer, but that made the difference (my Comment: a vote of confidence in the monitor), so, erm”.
4078 “And up until that point was everybody happy with the child care checks that”.
Reply “Yeah”.
……….And thinking about it now, looking at this, I was probably less confident in the monitor (my comment: or maybe not), by the position of the table, I mean, it was only a short bit but, than other nights”.
Russel O’Brien Rogatory
578 “And you heard Evie murmuring”.
Reply “Mmm mmm, mmm mmm”.
…….but I have, certainly I don’t remember the monitor going off, or hearing, or hearing ***e prior to me going back, I have to say I don’t, you know don’t remember Jane sort of saying, oh she was crying on the monitor as well but erm, as I say, it was more, it was more of a kind of a low whimper, this wasn’t sort of getting back there and she was yelling or anything…………………that the monitor wasn’t just sort of out of range or anything like that, or not, or not working, erm but I can’t, we didn’t go back me and Matt because I heard anything on the monitor, so whether ***e had just started as I got there, erm I, you know I don’t know”.
1578 “When you were at the Tapas Restaurant, where was the monitor, where was your monitor”'
Reply “We had, we had the erm, that’s the, if that’s their bedroom”.
1578 “No sorry”.
Reply “Sorry”.
1578 “The piece that you took with you”'
Reply “Oh Jane had it”.
1578 “Right”.
Reply “Yeah Jane had that, Jane (inaudible)”.

Re: Who monitors the monitors?
This is from: https://jillhavern.forumotion.net/t4672-david-smith-article-split-topic?highlight=david+smith+times
The exchange re the McCanns and the baby monitor and the Smiths is in: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Here is a snippet from that exchange I find very interesting:
D. Smith:
No i am not upset. I just don't to fuel the web ghouls (i have no idea whether you are one of them or not...) who seem obsessed
with what i consider to be the grotesque idea that the mccanns or their friends did away with madeleine. In addition to the
further distress it must cause the mccanns and their friends on top of the devastating event that started it, I just feel it is a
complete waste of time and energy. That said, however, I had a long briefing with Gerry McCann before I wrote my article and
I guess the baby monitor info came from him. I am aware that many discrepancies arose in the portuguese statements through
misunderstandings of language. And you ought to be aware that there will always be minor discrepancies of fact in statements
- failings of memory, interpretation and so on - which are not in themselves sinister or suspicious.

The question asked D Smith was:

get this info before the rogatory interviews even took place? I know you have to protect sources, but this seems a very strange
inside knowledge.
unquote.
The whole article is well worth reading and very significant in view of the favourable publicity the McCanns have had from this source.

Re: Who monitors the monitors?
Verrrrry interesting !
It is worth going back over the statements.
So many lies and discrepancies have been overlooked.
So now we have the table (large - round) moved back from the plastic sheeting and another table interposed between, for the reception of all the baby monitors.
But I thought the Tapas ar was full that night, since GM said they didn't think they would get in . . .
This also makes it even more impossible that anyone could see what was going on.
Thus moving the McCanns statement from highly unlikely and impossible towards a lie.

Re: Who monitors the monitors?
It also shows imo that Blacksmiths' information came from Unterdenteppichgekehrt, not the other way round. But then he doesn't give sources.
It looks as if it was tabled at the Rothley meeting.
Here too we have :
24horas
Witnesses came to the Algarve to reinforce testimony that contradicts the McCanns
03 June 2008
In a secret visit to Portugal, three people who had dinner at the Tapas Bar shattered the McCanns and Jane Tanner versions
Fiona Payne, her mother Dianne Webster, and the husband David Payne are the main trumps of the Public Ministry that will lead the parents of Madeleine McCann, the missing girl, on the 3rd of May 2007, from an apartment in Praia da Luz, Algarve, to be accused of the crimes of exposition and abandonment since they left the girl alone that critical night. It is a crime that is punishable up to ten years of prison and allows the respective preventive arrests, like 24horas announced last week.
These three witnesses returned to Portugal, on the 11th of July 2007, with travel paid by the Portuguese State, and were accommodated in a hotel unity of Portimão. They were questioned by Gonçalo Amaral’s team, the superior coordinator who was removed from the case, and they contradicted the McCann’s version regarding what went on in the night of the disappearance.
