Labor Day / May day

This may have already been talked about, or has absolutly no relevance at all. (if so pls remove topic)
But I see on the calender 2007 that May 1th is marked red and listed under Holidays and observances(as to the last word im unsure of the meaning .) as labor/ May day...Where im from those days marked red on the calender is like sundays, the main shops are closed, most things are closed those days.
I just couldnt remember at the moment what they where doing may 1th, and I also don't know how portugal do on those days marked red in the calender..
Does anyone know?

"Internationally celebrated, Labour Day is also a national holiday in Portugal. Most shops etc. will be closed as the workers take their day off. Traditionally, Portuguese people go for family picnics on this day."
