Suppose YOU returned to your overseas holiday flat and found one of your children dead or dying? Suppose you'd done the 'unforgivable' and gone out for dinner leaving your children alone in the holiday apartment. Suppose you'd given the children something to make them sleepy....travel sickness pills, for example. You find one of them on the hard tiled floor white as a sheet with blue lips, not breathing. You're sure she's died. Your other two infants are still sleeping soundly in their cots. Your spouse is still in the restaurant, due to follow shortly but you are alone for now.

What do you think you WOULD ACTUALLY DO (not what you know you ought to do, but what you think you actually would do)?

I would never, and didnt ever, leave my children alone to go out and enjoy myself, nor would I sedate them to facilitate it.

Neither would anyone I know.

I don't think the McCanns did either.

If I ever did this, (I would not), then I would phone for an ambulance straight away. I would worry about anything else later. I am medically trained myself to deal with emergency, but I still would phone for a paramedic.

I do not believe that to phone Sky News would be on my list of priority.

Suppose YOU returned to your holiday flat and found one of your children dead or dying? Empty Assuming that

I don't think that happened, but it is a possibility.
I would: try to revive her, whilst I'm doing that scream for help so the neighbours can phone the ambulance, because I would probably not have the countries number for emergency services.
After all, I'm a doctor, better even than a nurse, so my skills would be used immediately.
If she then did die and I was worried about consequences for myself, I would just lie and say I was there, asleep, heard a noise and etc. If I could get my friends to back me up in a much more complicated lie, why not?

Why avoid a PM? I don't need to hide the body. If she had been given Calpol I would say it was negligence, the cleaners left the medicines out, a tablet fell under the table without my noticing - the McCanns are very good at this sort of thing.

Should the police want to pursue this, although in view of the need for tourists in the area that is unlikely, they could start with the Ambassador and GB. Insist any PM done in Portugal had to be done again in UK and they'd be home free, little publicity, back to the job. End of story.
In fact I could still dine out on the story of how she'd have been saved if it had happend in the UK, because the emergency services would have been there faster, with better equipment. (They used the xenophobia of the press to good effect imo)

I would scoop up Margaret Madeleine and put her in a blue tennis bag then put her in the wardrobe. I would dash back to the lounge and quickly wash the walls and floor then take down the curtains and put them in the washing machine that I didn't know how to use. I would then rush to the supermarket to get some Cilit Bang. Then I'd push the sofa up against the wall so no one would think to look there. Once I'm sure I've got rid of all the DNA I would check to see if Madeleine needed rescucitating or refrigerating.

Call an ambulance, start CPR, shout for help.

I would never in a zillion years leave any child home alone. Prevention is better than cure.

To answer Lemain's initial question, I would panic inside, but be leavel headed enough to call my husband on the mobile, call reception to get an ambulance, and in the mean time try whatever I could think of to help. (thinking of what I recall from first aid lessons, which is not much, I now notice..)

And on a relative post here above. I did on some occasions leave my children asleep alone at night, to walk the dog at around 2300 when my husband was away for work. Not longer than 15/20 min, and in the neighbourhood, but still. I was always nervous and worried then. In hindsight..
Questionable. (They are now teenagers btw.)
So it is not for me to cast the first stone at the mccanns in that respect..

I have never left my kids but should I have made that mistake I am sure I would panic and scream the place down TBH

I once very nearly drove down to the local shops for some cigarettes then thought the better of it but it was a near thing. But I doubt I could or would have ever gone out to a pub for a pie and a pint....the British equivalent of the tapas bar. My children did wander downstairs in the evening on occasion if they couldn't sleep, or wanted tucking-in, or just if they needed the loo they'd wander down to get another tuck-in. I think the same goes for most toddlers, in my experience. You couldn't go out for a meal and a drink, could you? Unless you'd sedated them?
