I have copied this over from the other thread.

That's not so strange then: on the Queniborough place they netted L 115.000, which they put into the Rothley place straight away.

Leaving their mortgage.

Anybody any idea what you'd have to pay on that sort of mortgage, at their ages?

This, in connection with the -first- combined NHS incomes which later became only one NHS income (GMs) plus (private practice?)

Were they actually able to afford such a pricey place when they bought it?

But whoa, wait a second: where did they get the money to buy the Q-place without a mortgage?

They were not rich, at that time, nor were their families; where did L 185.000 cash come from?

They had also spent a lot of money on IVF, then there is the insurance to add on, plus day to day living and child care costs are astronomical.

Edited to add that I did read the mortgage repayments were £3,000 per month, but don't know if that is correct.

And don't forget all the holidays. Would they also still be paying off their student debts?
I can quite believe they were living beyond their means.

I'm thinking that it would explain the great enthusiasm of the family for the fund.......

It's on record that the family helped with the mortgage payments, perhaps also with the deposit?

Wasn't Gerry working for Comare doing private work. He may have had other work possibilities that we don't know about. Private consultations and the like. Sorry if I have got this wrong have a terrible memory - but this may have netted some ready cash.

The family (I'll try to find it this week, getting to grips with WiFi) did apparently help out, financially and practically - E.g. It's fairly clear that Maddie was looked after by family, stayed with them Christmas 2004, the Payne's looked after her on the Majorcan holiday and so on.
My thinking is in view of the house prices  above, that they had considerable help from the family. Imo they were broke in 2007.
The ardent efforts of the family to fill the coffers of the Ltd.Co may be because they would finally get back what was owed.
Don't forget that it's mainly Gerry's family who came to the fore and also that Kate wasn't mentioned  so much by them as would be expected. Perhaps Kate wasn't  seen as the ideal mate for their  little brother. Gerry was the star of the family, a promising career, hobnobbing with politicians -  Kate might have spoiled those ambitions.
Also, I don't get the impression she ever brought much money  in.  With two incomes  they should have been fine. I get the impression that the McCanns felt she didn't pull her weight.
My opinion entirely of course.

Didn't KH write in het book that GM came from a large family practically living in a basement with only two rooms, somewhere?

When I read that, I thought it rather down-putting. I'll look it up

It looks like number 4 per Google maps.

The McCanns certainly can't be far away. The vendors must have been scared that their house was unsellable!

That's my recollection too ...
K&G bought theirs early 2006 for nearly GBP 460,000.
The estimated value today is nearly GBP 500,000 ...

At the risk of sounding like the Daily Mail - if you find the property on the Right Move page (didn't want to post the link here) then on the top right says houses sold in Jan and June 2008 in the Crescent went for c 470,000 and 480,000 grand.

I wonder what the neighbours on that cul-de-sac think of the Mccann scam / circus.

Are the Mccannn's avoided like the plague at all costs or still invited round for the odd bbq / party etc and pleasantries exchanged.

My money would be on the former.

Would that be the neighbour's garden from where theycould also keep an eye on the children?

Gerry modified his statement about being in their own back garden to being in the neighbour's. garden at one point.

I remember on the infamous CATS letter it stated their mortgage was with Northern Rock, aka Northern Wreck.

I was always under the impression that was a place you went to if you struggled to get a mortgage with reputable lenders.  Northern Wreck was the at the front of the Self certified mortgages commonly called Liar Loans and the ridiculous 120% loans.

Basically they were a sub prime lender, although this was always denied.  Why did two doctors need to go to a place like this? What were the state of their finances really?

An ironic remark, at least in my opinion, because I believe Kate has suffered from anorexia at least during their marriage and maybe even before that.

Also just my opinion.
