Kate's Mother, Mrs Susan Healy

I'm wondering if the Healy narcissist in this story is not Kate, but her mum?

My view of Kate is that she seems to have married an absolute swine of a man.

Whatever situation she has found herself in, she has nowhere to turn to for help.

If she had wanted to leave Gerry prior to 2007 - where could she have gone, realistically?

He and his mates were well-embedded into her circle of friends and family...

Tim Craig-Harvey, speaking on the Halligen documentary, said something like -

"Kate looked absolutely battered (slight pause) by the events of the last year".

He seemed sympathetic to her, and genuinely wanting to help.

Whereas Kate's own mother seems to me to be in the faction of :

'She's made her own bed, she can lie in it'.

She strikes me as a rather unsympathetic character -

-I've never seen her show Kate any real affection.

I wonder if it is she who drags Kate off to get highlights...

...and co-ordinates her jewellery for her?

Some good points there, km has probably carried on the style from her mum but more under gms control now I think. In saying that, if my child was abducted, there not one person who could make me highlight my hair, match my earrings, dress the same as my hubby, I'd be searching high and low, and be on my hands and knees searching every grain of sand and pebble. But your right too, the mother does looks like how you describe her IMO looks quite controlling. But we don't know much about her either, although she was shocked that km did leave the kids on their own.

I suspect she is as tough as old boots.

My theory is that Gerry carefully selected Kate. I do not for a minute believe her accounts of their wonderful happy family life with three children under four. I suspect Gerry expected her to put up and shut up and refused to pay for the necessary level of childcare that might have helped ease the situation. Kate in her book writes that on the rare occasions they went out, they used relatives to babysit, which presumably meant free babysitting. I suspect Gerry found family life with very young children tiresome as he likes to be the center of attention. And I wouldn't be surprised if he had a roving eye, which may have lead to a row during that fateful week in Luz.

I also am disturbed by the description in Kate's book of "ugly purple, blue and black bruises on the sides of my hands, wrists and forearms. I was shocked. Gerry reminded me of how I'd been banging my clenched fists on the veranda railing and the apartment walls the night before. I could only vaguely remember it." (Page 94)

Interesting how it took Gerry to tell her how she had such bad bruises on her hands, wrists and forearms. Hmmm.

Who is reported as being the last person to see Madeleine alive? Who was secretly filmed laughing broadly only days after Madeleine's 'abduction'.

Kate may very well have felt quite trapped, especially as she was in a vulnerable situation with three such young children. And, as you say, Gerry has powerful connections and is not backward about using them.

The whole thing stinks.

A couple more pictures of Kate's mother - fancy high-heeled shoes, smart skirts and a double-handed grip on her husband.

Mrs Healy also favours mixing silver and gold jewellery - her hair always looks 'done' to me...

...rollers, blow-dryer, hairspray etc.

Whereas Kate - aside from good cuts and colour jobs, her hair seems pretty much 'wash and wear'...

(those ghastly green and yellow hair ribbons aside)

...I've only ever seen it with 'product' (horrible word) in it for up-close interviews.

Kate's natural dress sense is casual, a bit mis-matched and daggy - floppy cardigans and bootlegged trousers...

No skinny jeans, fun shoes or jaunty jackets for Kate...

Very few flattering fancy dresses, either - all baggy and the wrong colours.

The details of which - where from and how much - I don't think I've seen reported anywhere in the papers.

Which surprises me, a little. I wonder whether her stylists have steered her away from wearing certain brands?

For the sake of the labels, not Kate.

I'm not surprised the British press haven't done a series of 'get that look for less' articles -

- Kate's no fashionista and the Mrs McCann look isn't fun, or sexy, or dramatic.

I find it all sad, and tragic and I really feel sorry for Kate...

(and everyone else dragged unwillingly into this mess, too).

However my reading of her could be all wrong - who knows?

Another video that changed my opinion of Kate was a 'missing people Fun Run' one -

After the run, Peter Lawrence, Claudia's father, gives her a big hug and seems delighted to see her.

I think he's a decent man, and I valued his and Tim Craig-Harvey's reactions to Kate.

Whereas Kate's own mother does not seem to back her with any enthusiasm or kind feelings.

Completely concur with your remarks, j.rob - the bruises disturb me, too.

'Put up and shut up' - I feel this has been Kate's lot for many years now.

I too, have wondered about Gerry carefully selecting Kate as his wife.

Almost an arranged marriage...? I can see Gerry getting excited by the prospect of a dowry...

To a narcissistic woman, who did not live close by, he would have made an ideal son-in-law.

Dr Gerald McCann, the Scottish Catholic consultant cardiologist : tall (if you are short), dark and handsome...

He plays golf, too.
