Ghislaine Maxwell will stay in prison after $28.5m bail rejected

A judge has again denied bail to Ghislaine Maxwell, saying there is a risk that she could flee the US before her trial on charges that she assisted Jeffrey Epstein in the sex-trafficking of minors.

The British socialite had proposed a $28.5 million bail package that included $22.5 million posted by her and her husband and home confinement with electronic monitoring and a 24-hour guard.

It was the day Ghislaine Maxwell had spent nine months and 13 days waiting for - the chance to plead her innocence in front of a packed New York courtroom.

An arraignment is usually a procedural affair, particularly in the time of Covid where defendants mostly opt to appear via videolink, but Ms Maxwell was determined to have her moment before the judge.

The British socialite on Friday appeared in person for the first time since her arrest in July after being granted rare permission by Judge Alison Nathan.

She pleaded not guilty to the two new sex trafficking charges against her, speaking in her clipped British accent only to confirm she understood the charges and was waiving her right to have them read publicly.

The 59-year-old had already pleaded not guilty to charges of recruiting and grooming teenage girls from 1994-1997 to provide sexual massages to her one-time boyfriend Jeffrey Epstein.

Ms Maxwell’s lawyers have been claiming in various appeals for bail that she has lost weight and that her hair has been falling out as a result of the “Kafkaesque” prison conditions in a Brooklyn federal prison.

She did appear frailer than her last virtual appearance in July.

Dressed only in a thin baby blue t-shirt and black tracksuit bottoms with her feet in shackles, she crossed her arms tightly as if to warm her much smaller frame.

As she listened to the judge she ran her hands through a lank, greying mop of hair that has now grown to shoulder length - no longer the trademark pixie cut she has become known for.

Ms Maxwell's sister Isabel, who resides in the US, was in court for the hearing. Dressed in a black beret, glasses and a face mask, she tried to shield herself from photographers.

At one point Ms Maxwell turned to wave at her in the public gallery.

Her court appearance was the first time she has been seen by a member of her family since she was arrested in a dawn raid on the home she shared with her husband Scott Borgerson in New Hampshire in July.

Mr Borgerson, 44, an American entrepreneur, was nowhere to be seen on Friday, however. Her lawyer, David Oscar Markus, declined to say why he had not shown up in support.

Little has been seen of Mr Borgerson since he stepped down from his tech company CargoMetrics to avoid being a “distraction”.

The defendant's brother, Ian Maxwell, who after months of silence last month launched a PR campaign to have his sister freed from custody, was unable to travel from the UK due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Due to the coronavirus most hearings in the Southern District of New York are taking place via Zoom or through a dial-in phone line.

However, Ms Maxwell requested to appear in person after a January hearing held by videolink was hijacked by 14,000 QAnon conspiracy theorists who illegally streamed the proceedings on YouTube.

Those present in the courtroom were required to undergo strict temperature checks and made to wear two masks.

Danielle Bensky, 34, a victim of Epstein's who was sat in the public gallery, said she had come to face Ms Maxwell.

"To be honest I was too afraid to come to the Epstein trial so this is a new feeling for me to sit there and accept a lot of things. I do think it's hard to sit through it and it's painful, but it's good too, it's healing," she said after the brief 10-minute hearing.

Outside the Manhattan courthouse, protesters held up a banner reading: "Epstein is the worst kind of virus".

Sources close to the Maxwell family told The Telegraph that Friday’s appearance was about her wanting to “face her accusers head on”, as well as it being a welcome break from her prison cell at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center.

Ms Maxwell’s legal team has applied for bail and been rejected three times. Judge Nathan ruled that with three passports and considerable assets she continued to be a significant flight risk.

In the latest appeal, Ms Maxwell even offered to rescind her British and French citizenship in order to leave prison to prepare for her trial at home.

Appealing to a higher court, her lawyers told the Second US Circuit Court of Appeals that Ms Maxwell has not been given an adequate opportunity to prove that she would not flee if she was allowed to await trial at home under 24-hour armed guard and with collateral posted to support a $28.5 million (£20m) bail.

The bond - one of the largest in US history - comes from joint funds with Mr Borgerson, as well as money put up by family members and friends.

In a press conference after the hearing, Mr Markus said he had visited "courageous and tough" Ms Maxwell the previous night in prison and said she was “holding up” but that in his 23 years in the job he has never seen a defendant "treated so poorly".

“She’s looking forward to fighting, and she will fight,” he told the gathered media.

This manipulation of public opinion infuriates me, I even feel a degree of empathy for Ms Maxwell - only a degree!

If the allegations prove to be true, I can only say the girls procured were in their late teens and knew exactly what they were doing.  Seduced by power and money granted but nonetheless a conscious decision to get a taste of the high life, at whatever cost to themselves.

In my lifetime I've come across many an opportunist of a similar nature who wallow in the glory of rubbing shoulders with the elite, who willingly sacrificed purity over new found glory. Slutty girls and boys who cared not one iota for anything but the there and then.

Epstein is dead and buried, nothing can change that or anything he did when alive.

This salacious sensationalism leads nowhere, just another head on the block to conceal the real atrocities going on in today's world.

Children below teenage are the real victims of child sex abuse, children who can't speak for themselves nor defend themselves.  That is where the priority should lie, not with star struck adolescence who know the difference between right and wrong.

In my view the dead man and his living circle of acquaintances are only a thin disguise for the real disgusting issue of global child abuse - by the living!

It's such a simple solution to bury the problem of child sex abuse with the dead - the real problem is those who still live.

Epstein meetings a huge mistake, says Bill Gates

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has admitted he made "a huge mistake" in spending time with sex offender and disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Mr Gates told CNN he had "several dinners" about a philanthropy project that did not emerge, and should not have given him "credibility".

Epstein hanged himself in jail in 2019 while awaiting a sex-trafficking trial.

Mr Gates also discussed his divorce with Melinda French Gates, calling it "a source of great personal sadness".

The 65-year-old, who announced in March last year he was stepping down from the Microsoft board, said he and his ex-wife were "going to try and continue" working together on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Mr Gates was also asked whether he had regrets following allegations of workplace misbehaviour - some Microsoft employees have accused him of bullying.

He did not respond specifically, saying: "Certainly everyone does [have regrets] but it's a time of reflection, and at this point, I need to go forward."

Jeffrey Epstein [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] filed a lawsuit against Prince Andrew in Manhattan federal court Monday — accusing the royal of sexually assaulting her at the pedophile’s homes when she was a “child.”
Giuffre, who is seeking unspecified damages for battery and infliction of emotional distress, said the embattled blueblood abused her at least three times while she was 17.
Each time, Giufrre alleges, she was instructed by either Epstein or his alleged cohort, Ghislaine Maxwell, to engage in sex acts with the Duke of York. 
On one occasion detailed in the suit, Giufrre says she was forced to have sex with the prince at Maxwell’s London home. 
“During this encounter, Epstein, Maxwell, and Prince Andrew forced Plaintiff, a child, to have sexual intercourse with Prince Andrew against her will,” the suit states.

Virginia Roberts Giuffre is able to file under the Child Victims Act because she was under 18 at the time of the alleged crimes in New York.

Giuffre’s lawyer, David Boies, wrote in the suit she “feared death or physical injury to herself” if she disobeyed Epstein and Maxwell’s orders.

So in either jurisdiction consensual activity is lawful

If the point of the exercise was for Epstein to ‘get something’ on the Prince in order to bring him under some form of control?

Prince Andrew’s accuser is not expected to give evidence at Ghislaine Maxwell’s upcoming sex trafficking trial, The Telegraph understands, which could spare the Duke uncomfortable scrutiny.

Virginia Giuffre, who has said she was groomed and sexually abused by Jeffrey Epstein and Ms Maxwell but is not one of the alleged victims included in the charges against the British socialite, will not be testifying on behalf of the prosecution as had been speculated.

Ms Giuffre has been the most vocal of Epstein’s victims, launching lawsuits against those she claimed were in on the alleged conspiracy, including Ms Maxwell, the Prince of York, and former Donald Trump lawyer Alan Dershowitz.

She settled her defamation case against Ms Maxwell, 59, for an undisclosed sum in 2017. However, before settling Ms Maxwell took two depositions, which formed the basis of a separate perjury charge against her.

Questions have been raised as to why the allegations of the now 38-year-old, who was the first to publicly accuse Ms Maxwell of involvement in Epstein’s sex-trafficking ring, do not feature in the criminal indictment.

The charges against Ms Maxwell cover the period from 1994 to 2004 and are primarily based on the testimony of four accusers, three of which have opted to remain anonymous. Ms Giuffre alleges she was recruited by the heiress and “pimped” out to Epstein and his friends between 2000 and 2002.

A black book of Epstein and Maxwell’s contacts - which includes the names of some of the world’s most powerful people - is expected to be brought up in evidence.

The existence of the book has long been public, but the prosecution is set to argue that it in fact belongs to Ms Maxwell herself, not Epstein.

The 97-page directory was taken from the Epstein’s villa in Palm Beach, Florida, by Alfredo Rodriguez, a former butler.

Ms Giuffre claims she was forced to have sex aged 17 with Prince Andrew, Mr Dershowitz and others, all of whom deny the allegations.

However, it is now looking increasingly likely that the prince will be spared the spotlight during the highly anticipated six-week trial, set to begin on Monday.

The FBI in New York had sought to interview the Duke, but he has so far refused to offer his assistance. No criminal charges have been filed.

Ms Maxwell’s perjury charges are set to be heard in a separate trial after a verdict is reached on the conspiracy charges. It is possible Ms Giuffre will testify in the later case.

I think it was done on purpose to distract but by Mitchell. Epstein was not into kids, he was into young girls, teens not kids.  

3 letter intelligence agencies were familiar with Maxwell & Epstein, at the end they were providing the information for them to blackmail all the men who visited the Island & involved with the young girls. 

The reason they keep calling Randy Andy & Donald Trump's name is to distract people. 

There is a woman on twitter who says she was trafficked to Wexner and she has seen Trump, she was 26-27 when she was trafficked as she claims, 25 is old for Epstein.

I’ve always thought Virginia Roberts looks absolutely delighted to be with Andrew/Ghislaine. Of course, one never knows if this was before or after any alleged offence occurred.
Or why she came forward when she did.
