Maybe yes - maybe no, but if we don our conspiracy hats, then suddenly the unseemly haste to finish the dig, declare nothing found and race back to the UK becomes clear. With the libel trial starting on Monday, it would have been devastating for the McCanns if SY had been in mid-dig for her body. But having now spent 8 days with a giant task-force and found not a single trace, well now the McCanns can gleefully release their nauseating statement, print it and read it out on Monday.
The timing was very suspicious - and caught everyone by surprise. It had all the hallmarks of a sudden, 'on-high' decision that was to be implemented immediately.
How many hats should I order?

MET 'update' At this time no evidence relating to Madeleine McCann has been identified
---------------------------------------------------------------------
So how does THAT 'disprove' the PJ's and GA's and others 'conclusions'?
(thus PROVING that they are wrong and McS right)
You think a judge is gonna 'side' with the McS and say 'well, of course, the UK elite MET haven't found anything, so GA and the others in this case are found guilty of libel because, the elite UK MET can't find nothing"
As you say "I don't think so"
eta: The elite MET couldn't find Tia Sharp either!
Although she was, sadly, demised, in her own loft, throughly 'searched' by elite MET officers, who didn't find 'anything', for over a week!

I'm sure the smell of potential Euro's will not in the slightest put smug Gerry off although i really don't see both of them coming over together.
They can't be arsed to come over while 2 police forces are searching for there 'missing' daughter but will be more than happy to come over if they can try and get more cash.
Says it all really about the gruesome twosome.

Would they Dream of saying . . .
"We are further encouraged that, despite intensive searches, no trace of over a million soldiers has been found in the regions of the Somme, and this reinforces our belief . . . "
Just to remind people, in England the law provides
WIKI
Currently the law generally assumes a person is dead if, after seven years:
There has been no evidence that they still live.
The people most likely to have heard from them have had no contact.
Inquiries made of that person have had no success.
So the LACK of evidence is capable of providing legal proof of death.
And then we have the rather strange and illogical juxtaposition of Belief, and then "Could be"
We believe that she could be
BUT
we know that she isn't ?

My guesses in order of priority:-
Both really, really wanted to attend, but,
They couldn't go, 'cos Kate had to wash her hair.
Gerry had a migraine, brought on by nasty posters.
The car wouldn't start so they missed the plane.
The plane couldn't take off because a wing had suddenly dropped off.
They were looking at the wrong month on the calendar and missed the date.
So they've sent the 'fridge' along instead.

Doug D wrote:Met Police Press Release - Operation Grange Update
11th June 2014, 17.50
Operation Grange officers working alongside experts in their field from around the UK, the Policia Judicial and the Guarda Nacional Republicana today, Wednesday 11 June completed an eight day period of work searching specific areas of land in Praia da Luz.
At this time no evidence relating to Madeleine McCann has been identified. However it has given us an essential understanding of the activity on and people that have used this piece of land.
This was the first phase of this major investigation which has been agreed with the Portuguese following the four International Letters of Request submitted to date. More activity has been agreed and we expect that to commence shortly. In addition further requests are being compiled and will be submitted in due course.
The decision to search the “horse shoe” shaped piece of waste ground to the west of Praia da Luz and other sites was as a specific result of the UK’s investigation work to date.
The total area of land searched and surveyed was of approximately 60,000 sq metres and included all utilities, drainage channels and derelict buildings. 41 ground anomalies were identified initially by both aerial survey and ground analysis which were then investigated fully. These included three outside of the original area.
This deployment which was the largest ever undertaken by UK police overseas in a case of this type, highlighted the effective nature of the assistance given by the Portuguese authorities, for which the investigation team and family are very grateful.
The media’s understanding and co-operation following Assistant Commissioner Rowley’s pre deployment briefing has also been noted and appreciated.
There is still a substantial amount of work yet to be completed in the coming weeks and months, which again should be viewed as no more than normal operational activity in a case of this size and complexity. This recent work is part of ensuring that all lines of enquiry are progressed in a systematic manner and covers just the one hypothesis that she was killed and buried locally. This is the same as would be done in the UK for a murder or high risk missing person enquiry. The scientific support staff involved were there to provide the highest level of assurance that this area was searched to the highest possible standards.
Finally caught back up with this thread.
Unless I've missed it I haven't seen any comment on the bit I've highlighted in red. This also seems carefully worded to say "we could be making some enquiries or doing things that might lead you to wild speculation but please don't".

ONE or BOTH of the McCanns CAN (under Portuguese law) be 'arguidoed' the moment they set foot on Portuguese soil.
And 're-interviewed', as the PJ originally wanted, as persons of interest, before they 'ran away' like thieves in the night.
(They weren't so keen staying on in Portugal desperately 'searching' for Madeleine after they were arguidoed were they? Not that they and their 'families' had ever desperately 'searched' in Portugal for Madeleine, BEFORE they were arguidoed. What EXACTLY did 'family members' actually DO from May 4th/5th- 9th Sept 2007 in Portugal, other than grab 'freebies' from MW?)
No matter how loud DCI Redwood SCREAMS and SAYS about them NOT being 'persons of interest/suspects'!
Everyone KNOWS, even every Officer in the MET knows, that the very LAST person to have seen a LIVE 'missing' person, IS a POI.
ASK DCI Redwood's ex superior, at Operation Grange, Gold Commander, Simon Foy.
Who said on national TV "Of course Stuart Hazell is absolutely a POI, having claimed to have been the LAST person to have seen a 'LIVE' Tia"

Which makes Monday quite an interesting day... will one of both of them risk the journey? If they do, will they be made arguido? One way or another, some good clues about the future may be revealed on Monday...

They will have been assured, no doubt, that they will not be arguido'd if they appear on Monday.
I can remember reading a while back that one or both of them stated that assurances had been given that if they returned to Portugal (forget what occasion) they would be free to come and go as they pleased. Along those lines anyway.

I hope as soon as they step off the plane the arguido status is reinstated . How ironic would that be .

I suspect that you are right. And sadly, if that is indeed the case, then it is highly suggestive that even the Faro PJ are not actively pursuing them in this new reopened case. For if they truly had discovered 'new' evidence against them (sufficient to permit the case to be reopened), then making them arguido and presenting that evidence to them would seem a logical step.
The complete lack of any movement or information from Faro perhaps suggests that the case was actually reopened purely as a precaution in case SY had actually discovered anything of value. As it turns out they have not, and so the Faro team appear to have gone back into hibernation - and who can blame them.

I dont think they fear being "arguidoed" though jeanmonroe - else why did Gerry Mccann fly in to Portugal recently and make a big song and dance about wanting to speak at the libel trial ( knowing full well he had left it too late anyway) but it made good UK news back home so he achieved his aim anyway - imo of course.

So we suggest that the 'Autos' be sent to the EX.mo Sr. Procurador Geral da R'ublica [General Attorney], in order to:
G) New interrogation of the Arguidos Kate and Gerry McCann;
H) Evaluation of the measure of restraint to be applied in this case;
CONCLUSION
On the tenth of September, two thousand and seven
Chief Inspector
(Tavares de Almeida)
Of course, the McCanns (and English Police 'minders'?) had all done a 'runner' on the 9th September 2007
---------------------------------------------------
"restraint"?
Handcuffed?
or
"restraint' as in 'consideration'?

Re: Digging to start next week (continuation of automatically locked thread) - UPDATE... starting today 2/6/14
What DID they find on the digs?
If it is completely irrelevant - as Amaral seems to be suggesting - then why report it at all? It makes them look silly. As though it was all a waste of time and they were simply playing buckets and spades on an irrelevant piece of waste-land.
Is there some significance to two cannabis plants/a man's sock/animal bones? Does it point, even in a very obtuse or roundabout way to places/people/events/times that might be significant to 'unlocking the key'.
Or hoping to get someone to 'squeak' by putting out certain information.
Others have reported that there were 'phone pings' between some people potentially of interest on the days around Madeleine's disappearance. Not just the McCanns and the Tapas lot. But also Robert Murat, Sergei Malinka.
I also found myself being slightly interested in Amaral's remark about there being plantations of cannabis nearby as foreigners living there like them.
Anything else reported as being found/analysed on the digs?
