New Portuguese cop squad hunt Madeleine McCann
Scotland Yard hope to quiz 38 people of interest.
A police squad set up to carry out inquiries on the Brit officers’ behalf in Portugal is due to start work within days. Madeleine vanished days before her fourth birthday from the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz in May 2007, while her parents dined with pals in a nearby tapas bar.
The newly-appointed Portuguese officers will making inquiries, interview witnesses and arrest suspects for Brit police.
Meanwhile disgraced detective Goncalo Amaral, who headed the original investigation, faces a libel hearing in Lisbon on September 9.
He wrote a best-selling book suggesting Madeleine was dead and her parents covered it up.
Doctors Kate and Gerry, both 45, are seeking £1million in damages from him.
A source close to the McCanns said: “The new investigations and the high-profile libel hearing could re-energise the worldwide search for her.’’

Daily Star is a tabloid but sometimes tabloids speak the truth. I believe that by September the 9th the police will have caught the perpetrator.

Re: **TRIAL/HEARING** McCann v Amaral starts Mon 9th Sep 2013 - says Daily Star in press report 26/8/13
Well, the report is pretty clear:
Meanwhile disgraced detective Goncalo Amaral, who headed the original investigation, faces a libel hearing in Lisbon on September 9.
He wrote a best-selling book suggesting Madeleine was dead and her parents covered it up.
Doctors Kate and Gerry, both 45, are seeking £1million in damages from him.
A source close to the McCanns said: “The new investigations and the high-profile libel hearing could re-energise the worldwide search for her.’’
September 9 is a MONDAY.
Just a note of caution, the report says 'hearing', not 'trial'. Is it yet another preliminary, case management hearing?
I see the report says the McCanns are 'both 45'.
They were 'both 38' when Madeleine was reported missing, 'both 40' when they served their libel writ in Lisbon in June 2009, and are now 'both 45'.
If there was any doubt that this report is genuine, there is a quote fromClarence Mitchell 'a source close to the McCanns' at the end.
He says the trial will be 'high profile'.
Well, the court hearing in Lisbon in January 2010 was certainly 'high profile' - and so was the result - book remains banned, Amaral to pay costs etc.
But the verdicts in the Portuguese Appeal and Supreme Courts (October 2010 and March 2011), which both went in favour of Amaral, whom The Star describes as 'the disgraced detective,' were not high profile, and the British press never mentioned those verdicts..
I wonder why that was?

The Portuguese wisely say nothing much. In fact they neither confirmed receipt nor acceptance of it.
There is no value in the headline, a matter of deduction, nothing more, following the sequence of thing, but the real news embedded in it is the libel trial vs Amaral.
I am concern how the verdict of the libel is going to impact and/or jeopardise a trial in the UK, if it comes to that.
Is verdict of the libel going to give Defence lawyers ammunition citing jeopardy to a fair trial because of the publicity ?

This was an earlier report, dated 21 August, from someone who it seems was 'in the know':
http://lhro.wordpress.com/
Lisbon Libel Trial McCanns v Amaral. • August 21, 2013 • Leave a Comment
After almost two years of postponements the Libel Trial of the Century is set to take place this year in Lisbon, Portugal. Having been abandoned in February 2013 it was given a six month period after which, if both parties had failed to reach an agreement, the Full Trial was to be scheduled. Those six months are up.
The strategy of the McCann parents was originally to launch a two-pronged attack. In their somewhat frenzied desire to take control of the media, to stop newspapers quoting sources familiar with the police operations of the PJ. Most especially to silence any opposition to their claim that their child was abducted.
This attack came in two slices. The first was to have Goncalo Amaral’s book ‘The Truth of the Lie’ banned. If they succeeded the next step was to take him for every penny he’d got, claiming ‘Libel’.
‘The Truth of the Lie’ was written by Amaral (The lead detective and co-ordinator of the Portuguese investigation into Madeleine McCann’s death) after he had left the force. The book is a synopsis of that investigation based on ‘diligences’ observed (indications of suspicion) and the eventual conclusions of the PJ (Portuguese police) that Madeleine had died in her family’s holiday apartment. These observations can be found in what has come to be known as the PJ Files. Googleable.
‘The Truth of the Lie’, when it was published, proposed that Madeleine had not been abducted at all.
The McCanns’ claim of ‘abduction’ was being seriously threatened. So began the parents’ attempt to ban the book and sue the author. The book was banned. The newspapers shifted their stance, which has continued to this day, to get their quotes on the McCann affair only from the pair’s government-appointed spin-doctor. All steam ahead now to take Amaral for every penny he’d got…
But Ooooooops! The ban on the book was overturned. This represented disaster for Team McCann. A Court of Law had ruled that the book was not libellous..! From this moment the hope for a successful outcome to the Libel Accusation was destroyed.
The McCanns cannot win the Libel Trial when it comes to full court. They will be regretting the steps they have taken and desperately seeking a way out. In February this year, 2013, the trial was stymied when Amaral refused a ‘settlement’ agreement proposed by the McCanns. He wants this to go to full court where he wants the McCanns. For the first time they will be questioned in a Courtroom (or, more likely, via video link), but the important thing is to get them there.
We don’t have any idea what kind of ‘settlement’ the McCann team proposed, but the very fact that they offered it is itself remarkable. Normally it is the defendant who asks for a settlement, not the litigant. Again we see a struggling Team McCann.
At the beginning of this note I made mention of ‘Trial of the Century’ and this will be nothing less than that. It isn’t a ‘behind-the-scenes’ run of the mill trial. The McCanns do, of course, have the option of withdrawing their action - but the consequences for them would be catastrophic – they would be, essentially, admitting they were wrong to accuse Mr.Amaral of libel and that his synopsis is valid.
And that, in an instant, throws doubt on the abduction scenario. So we can take it the McCanns are not looking forward to this trial. There seems to be no way out for them.
But we have the politicians to reckon with. It is not in the UK’s interest to have this trial go ahead. A successful outcome for Goncalo will mean the UK, almost from the very start, was wrong to ridicule the PJ and insist that the ‘abduction’ was the only possible explanation of Madeleine’s disappearance – despite there being no evidence to validate that explanation. Top-level politicians will be seen to have interfered to, in effect, protect the parents and so obstruct the course of justice.
It is not in Portugal’s interest that the trial goes ahead. If Goncalo is successful it will create nothing short of a ‘diplomatic situation’ with the UK. Most unpleasant.
It isn’t unreasonable to suppose that high-flying lawyers and politicians from both sides are at this moment seeking ‘solutions’ and the best avenue to take to cause the least embarassment. Team McCann will be looking for legal arguments to further delay the trial. Team Goncalo – to speed it up.
There are many who doubt the trial will be allowed to proceed at all but I am firmly of the opposite opinion. The trial will go ahead. But be prepared for legal wrangling and an astonishing decision. Let us all hope we get Justice, at last, for Madeleine Beth McCann.

Clarence would find a way to spin this: "Amaral wouldn't back down, the costs of going to trial would divert the funds from the search, so it has forced them to withdraw.... cruel Amaral, wronged McCanns" This is what the UK press will report. The McCanns do, of course, have the option of withdrawing their action - but the consequences for them would be catastrophic – they would be, essentially, admitting they were wrong to accuse Mr.Amaral of libel and that his synopsis is valid.
The Portuguese will report that this represents a win for Amaral.

The reporting in the British press post-Express group payout and post-Leveson, and since the fragrant Ms Brooks fall from grace and impending trial, along with Coulson, has been shockingly one sided, and dare I say it, mind numbingly bland on the whole McCann affair.
Apart from varying quantities of so-called persons of interest our dashing Boys in Blue are poised to pounce upon in the coming weeks, (oh really? If there was a suggestion Madeleine was still alive, that any so-called persons of interest had her holed up in a grubby hellish lair upon a lawless hill, what police force in their right mind would leave her there a few more weeks whilst they sit around polishing their buttons??)
And if they don't know if she is in a hellish lair or on a luxury yacht giving someone a tuppence worth, or sadly demised, then just who are these persons of interest our SY superheroes have in their sights?
It doesn't add up. At least not the way it is being reported.
IF Scotland Yard are seriously considering 38 people unconnected to the main cast of players in this sorry tale, to the extent Mrs May and the CPS have feverishly been beavering away trying to persuade the swarthy sardine munchers to let them into Portugal to save the day, then they MUST know whether she is alive in a cave somewhere or dead, and a potential killer roaming around looking for another infant whose been left to babysit themselves for the evening.
Such delays in actually doing something constructive about it , i.e. talking about weeks rather than just getting on with it, are surely reprehensible.
Their tardy pace therefore seems to suggest something quite different.
Methinks, therefore, that certain Editors are perfectly aware that the boring rubbish they have published on this case for the last goodness-knows how long is well worth it, and are patiently awaiting the mother of all paydays.

DETECTIVES in Portugal have been recruited to help Scotland Yard quiz suspects and witnesses as the hunt for Madeleine McCann gained pace yesterday.

A source close to the McCanns said: “The new investigations and the high-profile libel hearing could re-energise the worldwide search for her.’’
If this is the case, then why did the McCann's try to get Dr Amaral to settle out of court? Why would they attempt to thwart a golden opportunity to "re-energise the worldwide search" for poor Madeleine. Is this another in a long list of their callous actions towards her safety and well being?

Good point Pennylane re. energising the world wide search, why try for an out of court settlement as reported?

Yes, just like

Antonio Giminez Raso
Julian Peribanez
Kevin Halligen
Henri Exton
Dave Edgar
and
Arthur Cowley...
...not to mention
Oprah Winfrey
and
Piers Morgan
and
Lord Leveson
...also 'energised the search for Madeleine'...
...but with zero results so far

different road
It is obvious that the Scotland Yard has chosen for another road, different from the PJ's.
For some, who are used to the PJ's approach, it seems that the Yard's work is useless or even fake. They can not follow it.
There are many ways to solve a crime and I am certain that the Yard is investigating on a efficient way.
Besides they have a good name to be kept.
Those persons of interest will bring the PJ and the Met to the body, directly or indirectly, they will point the culpits. This is something that is already known by the PJ but the police need a confession.

The 'Goncalo Amaral v McCanns libel trial' is 9 September according to the Star. The original date for Rebekah Brooks/Andy Coulson etc trial was 9 September but it was recently put back to October for 'legal reasons'
"The trial of former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks has been delayed by seven weeks. Brooks and seven other defendants, including her racehorse trainer husband, Charlie, and David Cameron's former head of communications Andy Coulson, were due to face phone-hacking charges in a three-month trial, starting 9 September". http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013/aug/22/rebekah-brooks-phone-hack-trial-delayed
Could there be a link?

Re-energise after they'd suspended their private search ? No urgency is there ?pennylane wrote:A source close to the McCanns said: “The new investigations and the high-profile libel hearing could re-energise the worldwide search for her.’’
If this is the case, then why did the McCann's try to get Dr Amaral to settle out of court? Why would they attempt to thwart a golden opportunity to "re-energise the worldwide search" for poor Madeleine. Is this another in a long list of their callous actions towards her safety and well being?

DETECTIVES in Portugal have been recruited to help Scotland Yard quiz suspects and witnesses
__________________________________________________________________
Detectives RECRUITED by whom to 'help'?
And paid by whom?
So there WERE 'WITNESSES' (plural) were there?
The only 'witness' (supposedly) that i know of is a 'friend' of the only two people that have said their child was 'abducted'.
Now we're being told that there is MORE than the one witness, we know about.
So WHO are these OTHER witnesses?

It would certainly be a 'feather' in Camerons cap IF he was to be able to pronounce at the Tory Party conference that the 'perpertrators' of a 'kidnap' case had been 'caught' with the help of the UK Conservative/coalition unlimited 'resources'tasprin wrote:The 'Goncalo Amaral v McCanns libel trial' is 9 September according to the Star. It would also be convienient, for him, that people were talking about that, at the conference, rather than his country supper friends and his friend Andy's (now 'delayed' until AFTER conference) up and coming 'perverting the course of justice' trial.
Cynical, am I.

The situation in Syria and the forthcoming intervention of USA, its UK poodle and the UN debate is likely to take precedence over other matters.
So for members of the forum whose focus is to seek justice for Madeleine, in September we have the Tory Conference, the first family conference of Missing People, a possible investigation in Portugal by SY lead by a 'new improved' dedicated Portuguese police team according to the press, the Brooks/Coulson trial postponed to October and the awaited libel trial McCanns v Amaral. I somehow think that the libel trial will not go ahead due to revealing details that might harm the SY investigation - you can't beat a bit of good timing.
