Madeleine McCann's parents say efforts to find their daughter 'will eventually yield results' as they reflect on 'awful events happening around the world' in new year's message

The parents of Madeleine McCann have released a New Year's message in which they said efforts to find their daughter 'will eventually yield results'.

Madeleine vanished in May 2007 while on holiday with her parents in the Portuguese resort town of Praia da Luz, sparking a nationwide hunt.

In a message on the Official Find Madeleine Campaign Facebook page tonight, Kate and Gerry McCann said there was 'no new significant news to share' in the search for their daughter, but vowed to persevere.

They also reflected on the 'awful events happening around the year' such as war, child abductions and 'immeasurable pain and suffering'.

The McCanns' post read: 'Another year comes to a close. I'm sure they're getting shorter!

'We believe such perseverance will eventually yield results.

'Thank you again for your support, Christmas wishes and shared hope.

'Despite our own personal circumstances, it is impossible to be unaffected by the awful events happening around the world this year with so many wars, immeasurable pain and suffering, children abducted, killed and orphaned.

'Let's hope that 2024 brings a greater love for mankind, hope and peace to us all.'

It comes after Portuguese police reportedly apologised for the way detectives investigated the case and treated the family.

Maddie went missing after her parents left the then three-year-old and her younger twin siblings asleep in their apartment while they went out to dinner with friends.

During questioning of Madeleine's parents in September 2007, detectives made them both 'arguidos' - or suspects - in their daughter's disappearance.

That status was eventually lifted and the investigation was shelved in 2008, but the couple remained under suspicion in Portugal for years.

Months after Scotland Yard launched its own investigation, Operation Grange, into Madeleine's disappearance in 2013, Portuguese police confirmed that a review of their original inquiry had uncovered new lines of inquiry, and they reopened the case.

The officers also gave their support to the German authorities who believe their prime suspect, 46-year-old German national Christian Brueckner, a convicted sex offender, kidnapped and murdered the youngster.

Brueckner is in prison in Germany for the rape of a woman in Praia da Luz in 2005, and is suspected of further rapes and child sexual abuse committed in the area between 2000 and 2017.

Earlier this month, it emerged that Brueckner has told friends he 'struggles with the pressure' of being accused of 'one of the world's most infamous crimes', which remains unsolved to this day.

It has also been reported that he finds it 'unfair' that investigators have not yet shared any of their evidence against him with his legal team.

'Christian B has regularly told pals he speaks to from prison how tough it is being the Madeleine suspect,' a source said, according to The Sun.

'It's clear he is struggling with the pressure of being so firmly in the spotlight of the world - even if he is behind bars,' the source said.

Speaking to The Sun, the source said Brueckner 'hates being suspected of one of the most famous crimes in the world. And his lawyers hate that he is constantly the subject of headlines.'

It was confirmed late last month that the 46-year-old will finally go on trial on February 16 next year.

A German prosecutor has confirmed it will be a Friday morning start for the multiple sex crimes trial of the German paedophile.

Expected to last for 'up to three months', it will be presided over by a 'panel of four to five judges', it can be revealed.

Brueckner's lawyers are said to have been given hope by recent claims that German investigators failed to find physical evidence tying him to McCann during an operation in Portugal earlier this year, in which they searched an area near a lake.

Last month it was reported that he might have taken photos of the missing toddler and buried them in an underground hideaway at a reservoir in the Algarve.

The convicted paedophile is alleged to have taken 'trophies' from his victims in the past.

He has reportedly denied any involvement in Madeleine's disappearance.

Kate and Gerry McCann released a new message on the Official Find Madeleine Campaign Facebook page

Madeleine McCann’s parents have issued a new message as the search for their missing daughter continues.

McCann went missing in May 2007 aged just three and the mystery remains unsolved.

Kate and Gerry McCann said efforts to find Madeleine continue with "the same determination, commitment and vigour".

Portuguese police recently apologised to the family for the way detectives investigated the case and treated the McCanns.

The McCanns' Facebook post read: "Another year comes to a close. I’m sure they’re getting shorter!

“Whilst there is no new significant news to share in the search for Madeleine, efforts continue with the same determination, commitment and vigour.

"We believe such perseverance will eventually yield results. Thank you again for your support, Christmas wishes and shared hope.

"Despite our own personal circumstances, it is impossible to be unaffected by the awful events happening around the world this year with so many wars, immeasurable pain and suffering, children abducted, killed and orphaned.

"Let’s hope that 2024 brings a greater love for mankind, hope and peace to us all."

Scotland Yard launched its own investigation into the toddler’s disappearance, known as Operation Grange, in 2013.

The prime suspect is 46-year-old German national Christian Brueckner.

Brueckner, who is a convicted sex offender, is currently serving a sentence for raping a woman in Praia da Luz in 2005.

He is also suspected of further rapes and child sexual abuse committed in the area between 2000 and 2017.

Brueckner denied any involvement in McCann’s disappearance and Portuguese authorities launched a fresh search after German prosecutors received "certain tips" about the case.

The location was around 30 miles away from Praia da Luz.

The McCanns were questioned by detectives in September 2007 and were both considered suspects in their daughter’s disappearance.

However, the status was lifted the following year as the investigation failed to yield results.

Fight - what or who is it they are fighting?

I don't see any continuation of anything apart from their empty words, Operation Grange looking for a missing child and the German police pinning the tale on the donkey.

Aren't the dastardly duo buoyed bounce by recent worldly events, like the prodigal return of Alex Batty, rather than pondering gloom and doom?

Kerry Needham is, she thinks it a miracle.

Missing Madeleine McCann's parents say investigation into toddler's abduction 'will eventually yield results'

McCann was 3 years old when she was abducted from a family vacation in Portugal in 2007

The parents of Madeleine McCann, a British girl abducted during a family vacation in Portugal more than 16 years ago, issued a new statement on New Year's Day expressing their belief that the investigation into her disappearance "will eventually yield results."

Kate and Gerry McCann, along with their three children – Madeleine and twins Sean and Amelie – were on vacation in Praia da Luz, Portugal, when Madeleine, who was 3 years old, was taken from her bed on May 3, 2007. The family was staying in a ground-floor apartment.

"Another year comes to a close. I’m sure they’re getting shorter!" the parents wrote in a statement posted to social media. "Whilst there is no new significant news to share in the search for Madeleine, efforts continue with the same determination, commitment and vigour. We believe such perseverance will eventually yield results. Thank you again for your support, Christmas wishes and shared hope."

The parents added that despite their family's "own personal circumstances, it is impossible to be unaffected by the awful events happening around the world this year with so many wars, immeasurable pain and suffering, children abducted, killed and orphaned."

"Let’s hope that 2024 brings a greater love for mankind, hope and peace to us all," they wrote. "With our best wishes for the new year."

The latest development in the case came last spring, about 16 years since Madeleine was abducted. Portuguese, German and British authorities collaborated in May to search for items possibly related to the case near the Arade dam, about 31 miles from Praia da Luz.

Portugal's Judicial Police said in a May statement that the search request from German authorities has been completed and "resulted in the collection of some material that will be subject to" analysis, according to a translation. Items recovered during the search were transported to German authorities for testing in accordance with international rules, Portuguese police said at the time.

In 2020, German authorities named Christian Brueckner, 45, as a suspect in Madeleine's disappearance. Brueckner continues to deny his involvement in the case.

Brueckner spent many years in Portugal, including in Praia da Luz, around the time of Madeleine’s disappearance.

He was charged in 2022 with sex crimes against children that German authorities allege he committed in Portugal between 2000 and 2017 and is currently serving time for raping an American woman in 2005.

I guess that depends how you define the word 'awful'.

The use of the word 'hunt' is so disrespectful, sounds more like a poacher prowling the lawless hills with a rifle at hand in quest of something for dinner.
