I’m embarrassed to admit that Gerry and I thought this letter was a hoax; more embarrassing still, while we were vaguely aware of Sir Clement, we had to have our memories refreshed by Sandy and Justine before we could place him exactly. Mind you, he wore so many hats – humorist, MP, gourmet, gambler, press columnist, advertiser of dog food, radio and TV personality – that he was hard to pin down.

Gerry responded with a phone call and Sir Clement invited the seven of us there at that time – Gerry and myself with Sean and Amelie, plus Trisha, Sandy and Justine – to lunch the following day. He would be heading back to the UK a few hours later. Sir Clement was eighty-three by then, but his intellect was still razor-sharp (he was appearing on the demanding Radio 4 panel game Just a Minute right up to his death in 2009).

I’m usually very intimidated by people with brains the size of planets, but Clement was incredibly warm, funny and instantly likeable. His opening words weren ‘Can I interest you in a strawberry vodka?’  It was midday. I hesitated for a split second, rapidly trying to work out if he was joking. His expression, as always, was deadpan. Not wanting to appear unsociable, I responded, ‘Er, OK then. That would be nice.’ Of course, Clement’s remark about cooking decent meals was tongue-in-cheek: among his other accomplishments, he had trained as a chef and was for many years a food writer and restaurant critic.

I can confirm that the lunch he prepared for us that day was bloody marvellous: watercress and egg salad followed by a chicken and mushroom risotto – the best risotto we’ve ever tasted before or since.

Clement cheered us up with his lugubrious wit, and would continue to do so by email after his return to England.....

Clement Freud returned to Praia da Luz on 31 August and called Gerry that day. ‘Is it true, Gerry?’ he said, without preamble.
 
‘What’s that, Clement?’

‘That you’re close to a breakdown and needing medication?’

Very funny.
‘I have a lot of empathy with the Express though, you know,’ he went on.

For a split second Gerry thought he was serious. ‘Why’s that?’

‘Well, you see, we both suffer from poor circulation'.

Thank God for people like Clement who kept us smiling.

[beginning of September 2007]..

Our plans for the evening went out of the window. We cancelled an interview we were scheduled to give Paris Match and dinner with Clement Freud....

At 9.50pm, I rang Clement. ‘Come on round,’ he said. ‘It’ll be nice to see you. But you’ll have to forgive my night-time attire.’

We found Clement watching a cookery programme, dressed, as promised, in his nightshirt. It was so ordinary and comforting, a bit like going to see your grandad after a horrible day at school. He gave me one of his looks and a giant glass of brandy, and managed to get a smile out of me with his greeting: ‘So, Kate, which of the devout Catholic, alcoholic, depressed, nymphomaniac parts is correct?’

His response to our catalogue of horrors was merely to raise an eyebrow. Clement had this way of making everything seem a little less terrible. When he heard about the dogs, he remarked laconically, ‘So what are they going to do? Put them on the stand? One bark for yes, two for no?’ He was right, of course; it was ridiculous.

A couple of hours later, fortified by our brandies (it was my first-ever taste of the stuff), some useful snippets of advice and several amusing anecdotes, we left our friend feeling quite a bit better than we had when we’d arrived. The shock of that day, and of what we were now facing, on top of the trauma of Madeleine’s absence, never left us for a second, but it was interludes like this that gave us just enough strength to carry on...

The fact Freud and Murat knew each other is one in a series of odd links that the dead former Liberal MP had to the McCanns.
He had also entertained Gerry and Kate at his house in the days after Madeleine disappeared in 2007.

Murat, 43, lived close to the apartment where the three-year-old was snatched. He was named a as a suspect by Portuguese police, but later cleared of any involvement. And Freud’s Casa da Colina villa in the resort is a few hundred yards from a key sighting of Madeleine.
A Brit said that he saw a man carrying a little girl in the early hours of May 4, 2007.
The villa is also dwarfed by a huge hill that Kate, 47, was once convinced was where Madeleine was buried and begged cops to have it searched.

Her plea came in July 2007, when Freud befriended the McCanns.
Robert Hurst, landlord of the Pigs Head, said: “I find that really odd. I can’t imagine why he would suddenly want to invite them to his house.
“At the time Madeleine went, all hell was going on. Police everywhere, people just stunned and he’s straight in there having them over to dinner.
“When it came out this week that he was a paedophile, it made you wonder what he was up to?”
Freud, who was revealed in an ITV documentary to have abused girls as young as ten, also visited the nearby Plough and Harrow.



Missing ‘DJ Shifty’…went on run and is still being hunted  
It was nicknamed the Plough and Paedophile after a Brit working there dubbed DJ Shifty went on the run when cops tried to speak to him over alleged grooming and child sex abuse images.
Christian Ridout, 32, whose parents owned the bar and lived next door to Murat, has never been traced.
In her book about Madeleine, Kate told how Freud, then 83, sent a letter out of the blue inviting them to his house for a meal.

No, I have not run away with myself. Unfortunately I have been studying this precise issue for close to 30 years so I feel obligated to try and educate others who have, quite understandably, no idea how or why these groups operate. I've simply tried to correct what I believe are false impressions.

Perhaps a few points from Ms. Krebs testimony might be helpful.

1. The groups are usually headed by a single dominant male. Usually wealthy with many celebrity and political contacts. He is the worst offender. Everybody in the group protects him above all else. They will lie for him and threaten the victims with the deaths of pets or anything else they care about to keep them quiet.

2. The group doesn't usually go out smashing shutters and abducting children. The dominant male relies upon his 'circle of friends and family' to supply him with victims. He does not go out searching for them. He sits tight like a Sultan and the child victims are brought to him. The dominant male gets 'first crack'. Nancy was first assaulted at age 3 by this person in her group.

3. There is a hierarchy with men holding certain 'support' positions in the group. One might be tasked with filming the assaults, another is tasked with distributing the materials, and yet another is responsible for laundering the money. If there are few men in the group some might be forced to 'multi-task'.  There is even a male who is given the job of 'facilitating the action'. I won't be more graphic than that, but it is Ms. Krebs' belief that this 'facilitator' [not her words, but my characterization of her description of this person] of her group was actually responsible for the accidental death of JonBenet.

4. From what I can gather boys born within the group are taught to 'offend'. They are encouraged to be abusive and domineering towards the girls, while the girls are groomed to 'enjoy' the attention.

5. The 'parties' during which this nefarious activity takes place are usually held during holidays so that the many cars present at the chosen residence does not arouse the suspicion of neighbors.

The purpose of these groups is not just to indulge in perversion, their main motive is profit. Once you move up the political and social food chain, you can add political blackmail to the mix.

All I can say is WOW. Is this the first time the McCs have been forced to hand over potentially incriminating material? I mean they got away without having to disclose financial, medical, or phone records. Suddenly their nasty little box of secrets might actually see the light.

Just wanted to acknowledge this information. Although sickening I do believe that if people are educated in what is really happening in the world regarding these 'groups', the more exposure can bring conclusion to end and convict; thus protecting future harm to our children. Do you have any statistics which show targeted areas and quota?i.ehow many is believed to be prolific? Have any "heads" been caught? 
Is this more so in America than the UK or other countries? 
It all makes sense regarding the blackmail,and money laundering, this I believe is happening in the Madeleine McCann case. I also believe that some are "trapped" and want to get out of the 'circle' whether they are participants or just have immediate and damning knowledge. I will read the links provided. I now understand why you are thinking the way you are about CF, I still stand by my original thought process at this time. Thank you for the enlightening post. I think I need a lie down now

I did read that any emails/correspondence would be requested from Freud's family and not Mr. & Mrs. but that was in a press report so who knows.

If any emails contain incriminating material it is possible that they would be deleted imo.

Unfortunately I think that if there had been anything at all remotely incriminating it would have been long ago sanitized quite thoroughly but you never know... if the police have acted quickly and are leagues (ie years) ahead of the newspaper reports, they may have been able to retrieve computers and hard drives and used forensic techniques to recover anything that may have been incompletely deleted.

I suspect it's likely however that someone of CF's stature would have had expert advice concerning disposal of hard drives, and even after he dropped dead of a sudden heart attack, I'm pretty positive his family and/or advisors would have taken care of anything like that, especially if they were quite aware of his extracurricular activities.

Old story, created by ‘Metodo 3’ from 2007 about ‘DJ Shifty’ aka Christian Ridout, who apparently ran off to Spain and disappeared well before (probably around December 2005) the Mc’s holiday after allegations of grooming and texting a 12 year old.
I don’t think there was any mention of ‘child sex abuse images’ before, so where has that come from?
We know how reliable Metodo 3 were.
 
Lazzeri suddenly finds that CF ‘was a regular there and ‘drank with’ DJ Shifty. Says who? A least she quotes a source from The Pigs Head. We don’t even get ‘an old friend of’ or any such bullshit.

According to all the available evidence, the  McCanns and their mates were staying for only a few days on a low budget holiday package deal at the Ocean Club PdL.  If a powerful wealthy organized group was involved I would expect them to have been staying in a villa as guests of some influential personality or accommodated in a 5* hotel, not a small shabby Warners holiday apartment.  We wouldn't be here today discussing the case of Madeleine McCann - we wouldn't even know of her existence, the whole operation would have been handled with descretion.

The aftermath however is another matter altogether.  The issue of child sex abuse is a national/international problem of mammoth proportions - the need to protect those involved directly or on the periphery is paramount.  This I believe is where the truth lies.

So why such a huge effort to exonerate the McCann's of any wrongdoing in the disappearance of their child by the PTB etc. in the U.K.? Why didn't they let the Portugese authorities handle the crime that happened in their country, and of which they have jurisdiction in the case, because the crime did in fact happen in Portugal? Why such a lot of hoopla about it from the U.K. authorities as if Maddie's disappearance happened in the U.K.? IMO there is more to this case than a couple of doctors & their tapas mates staying in low level accomodation in PDL. So many questions.

I was going to say, because phonecalls can be traced. But then why would he invite the McCanns to call HIM? That also doesn't make sense.

What would make sense is a personal visit from a mutual friend delivering a verbal message, and a verbal message being returned by the mutual friend. Nothing traceable that way, except the involvement of the mutual friend.

Yes we can see that Gerry called Philip Wright twice in July. What I'm asking is - are either or both of those phonecalls to Casa Colina in response to CF inviting them over for dinner?

According the Mail CFs  five bedroom villa is a third of a mile from the Mark Warner Ocean Club complex where Madeleine vanished.


Three metres from the beach, it is now rented as a £2,470-a-week holiday let.
