It was the Mcs themselves who made MBM a WOC.

Most probably to be ahead of the game, like they always have been, many times. They didn't take on VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY EXPENSIVE LAWYERS for nothing, they most probably would have been advised to take that step to make themselves look innocent before the WOC was forced on them.
Only IMO of course.
ETA: As an side although we know M wasn't abducted, but in the case of an abducted child - I doubt any police force or child protection officer would just hand the child back to the parents if he/she was found as it nothing had happened. The child was put in harms way by the parents (according to their statements), they had no regard for the child's safety, emotional needs or anything else if the child was left alone. I expect any child who was found after being "abducted" would have to be taken into protective custody and assessed by qualified child therapists, hence the child would have to be made a WOC whilst missing.

No such thing as a free lunch...?
Before I faced the press, Anne-Marie and I went along, briefly, to a lunch in Lagoa to mark International Missing Children’s Day. A month before I’d never even heard of ICMD, which encourages people around the world to remember all missing children and their families and to express their solidarity with them. Now, of course, the date is engraved on my brain. We had been invited to this lunch by Susan, the wife of Haynes Hubbard, the new Anglican minister in Praia da Luz. The Hubbards had come to Portugal from Canada three days after Madeleine’s abduction and this was the first time I had met Susan. She was to become a very close friend and has been a real support to me ever since.

KATE MCCANN kindly accepted The Resident’s invitation to attend our charity lunch to mark International Missing Children’s Day on May 25. Here she is seen releasing yellow and green balloons, with prayers and messages to all the missing children in the world, outside the A Paleta Restaurant in Lagoa. From the same article : Everyone present was delighted that Kate McCann, Madeleine’s mother, decided to accept The Resident’s invitation and make a surprise visit to the event with two of her friends.
As the lunch was such a success, The Resident has decided to make it a yearly event, to mark and raise awareness for International Missing Children’s Day.
Helium balloons again, this time with the lunching ladies in Lagos...
Not quite sure who extended the invitation in the first place...
The local press or the vicar's wife?

It's important to keep the limelight on a little girl who needs to come home...
(sorry, still can't do links)
The above are the details of New Zealand's own Marcus Lush interviewing International Vicar Father Haynes Hubbard.
Our Father Haynes sounds like a seasoned fudger when it comes to how he met the McCanns.
He also sounded as if he and his family had quite waved the McCanns goodbye -
"they don't need much of our pestering"...
Yet the two families seem to have stayed close.
The Summers & Swann book studiously avoided any mention of the handily-timed Hubbards.
I've had a close listen to Father Hubbard's accent - Canadian twang, with military British underneath...?
Could he be ex-army?

Re: Interview with Father Haynes Hubbard 5 year on
It would appear that the Hubbards were instrumental in getting the locals and local ex-pats 'on board' in terms of the McCanns. I have it straight from a Luz local. The family would have believed that the Mcs were guilty were it not for the very close support the Mcs received from the Hubbard family who were a very important part of the Luz community. And, it would seem, commanded much respect/affection, at least by some.
It would seem that the Hubbards are still friendly with the McCanns.
I must admit I was quite dumbfounded as I did not realize this family lived in Luz. So I completely forgot to ask about the Smith family. And about Robert Murat. How they are known/regarded locally.
As Luz is such a small community, I would imagine that the Hubbards would have known the Smith family or at least known of the Smith family.
Would be interesting to explore the timings with regard to the Hubbards leaving Luz; the Smith e-fits and the Mcs looking grim, grim, grim on the 6th Anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance.

Haynes Hubbard : a man on a mission...
Thank you for that piece of Luz insider info, J. Rob.
You know it's an English production when there's a vicar involved...!
Haynes Hubbard is one of the stars of this show - he's a favourite character of mine, anyhow.
He's glitzy.
That's a big fat wedding ring he's got there.
My wish is for Operation Grange to come up with a plausible explanation for his role in this whole palaver.
I still find this picture utterly disturbing :
(snipped from news.bbc.co.uk, 11th May 2007)
The Establishment made flesh.
My opinion only.
P.S. I've had a good look at the sixth anniversary pictures. Gerry looks bloody awful.
Quite different from the fellow gracing the Daybreak sofa just days earlier...
He has a peculiar sun tan - like a ski tan in reverse...

Strange that that staunchest of Roman Catholics KH would go to church and be [strike]photographed being[/strike] blessed by an non-Catholic priest
Does the Roman Catholic Church make allowances for that?

I imagine that she could receive a blessing, but not receive the communion......so it was probably OK.

Almost anything inter-religious goes these days in the Catholic Church in the name of ecumenism.
The only thing not officially allowed (but no one polices it) is receiving communion from a different branch. Some people even ignore this.
The Catholic Church continues to change it's unchangeable teaching from the days of "Mortalium Animos" (complete ban on all religious activity with non-Catholics - ie. heretics).

"The Mark Warner staff had brought over stacks of food for us. The men organized a barbecue and there was wine and beer. We ate mostly in silence, concentrating on the kids. I couldn’t eat much, and alcohol was completely off my agenda. Fiona recalls that Gerry and I were completely shut down that day, barely able to talk, and although our friends tried to remain cheerful and behave normally to get us through it, they all felt awkward about being at this lovely villa, in the sunshine, in these circumstances. There was no cake. Gerry did attempt a toast but he was visibly upset and couldn’t manage much more than ‘I can’t even say happy birthday to my daughter . . .’ before choking up. The physical loss was more intense than ever. I ached for Madeleine."PeterMac wrote:j.rob wrote:missbeetle wrote:" />" />
Followed up by a family barbeque...!
Anyone would think Gerald had just won the lottery.
And to put it all in its proper context, this is a description of that day from the Truthful Book.
"The Mark Warner staff had brought over stacks of food for us. The men organized a barbecue and there was wine and beer. We ate mostly in silence, concentrating on the kids. I couldn’t eat much, and alcohol was completely off my agenda. And the photo proves it !
Interesting and telling.
They found time to organise a bbq with food and beer , in other words a party even though there was no cake, yet couldn't find time to actually go out and physically search, neither the mccanns themselves, or their family and friends.
I would take it as this wasn't them coming out to help search for Maddie or to help in other ways such as handing out flyers etc, instead they all piled in for a free all inclusive holiday.
Given that if a friend of yours had a child genuinely go missing in a foreign country, would you do all you could to help even to going out and physically searching along with the parents and everyone else, or, would youy pack your swimming cossie and suncream and go over and hang around the pool eating and drinking whilst the police and locals and ex pats searched till they dropped to find your friends missing child?
If your friend had a child allegedly abducted in a foreign country and you went over to help in any way you could, what would you be thinking if you were out at the crack of dawn along with police and locals etc searching till you dropped and you saw the parents of said missing child, lounging around by the pool eating and drinking , playing tennis and jogging as well as travelling the world at others expense to countries where Maddie is not likely to be found and meeting celebs and world leaders?
You would be thinking WTF?
Why aren't they out searching like the rest of us to find their missing child?
What would you think if you learned they refused to co-operate with the police?
What would you think if they refused to do a police reconstruction?
What would you think if you learned they threatened to sue anyone who disagreed with their version?
Would you be asking them questions regarding their behavior?
You would be looking for the expected in such a case, you would expect them to do what you yourself would do in the same situation ( even allowing for the alleged neglect which never happened)
If you bought the alleged neglect story, wouldn't you be asking them what the hell they were thinking leaving 3 toddlers home alone every night, especially given they are doctors and know exactly what can happen in a frction of a second , even with the parents right next to them?
In missing persons cases, especially where a child is involved, you look for the expected, what you yourself would do in the same situation.
What you would say and do, cooperating with LE and taking polys and whatever else was needed.
You would call out to the missing person to reassure them, to let them know you are searching for them and will find them, telling them to try and get help/escape or whatever they can
This is normal, this is what is called the expected, this is what happens in every case from innocent parents and family members.
When you see the unexpected, the non cooperation, the refusal to do reconstructions or take polys or do whatever else is needed, then you have a cause for concern.
You only see this behavior when the parents or family members of the missing person have something to hide such as guilt or guilty knowledge.
Although this is unexpected behavior, it is expected behavior from guilty parties, they act is a specific manner, appearing to cooperate whilst doing the opposite.
hiring lawyers, refusing polys or answering questions.
Refusing to do reconstructions or setting so many demands it cannot be done as it should be.
There is no calling out to the missing person, instead there is often subtle demeaning of the victim, it is their own fault the event happened.
Everything is about how they feel rather than what the victim feels.
The mccanns show every red flag possible regarding their involvement with the homicide, conealing of a corpse and filing a false police report.
They themselvers have told the world Maddie is dead and they are involved.
The tapas 7 have told us the same and have revealed their gulty knowledge.
Do they realise they could be charged as accessories after the fact?
They can face charges of obstruction and peverting the course of justice?
Do they understand that if push comes to shove, the mccanns will throw them all under the bus in an effort to cover their own asses?
I would suggest they get their own lawyers, one per person and then reveal the truth of what they did and what they know.

Oh I am sure they have are all fully aware of the 'situation they find themselves in' but - given the flippancy demonstrated in the 'reconstruction' in the Madeleine was Here series (mind you, that was a long time ago) - they have felt reasonably confident that they will be protected.
It is astonishing how few people have spoken up. Completely astonishing.

I find it disgusting the way the Mcs have hidden behind the cloak of religion. Haynes Hubbard has most definitely been a 'key player' but he left Luz last year so that could possibly be significant. Who knows?
Yes, the Mcs on Madeleine's sixth anniversary look genuinely grim-faced. Not with grief about Madeleine, imo, but grief about themselves and 'the situation they find themselves in'. So could this possibly have been to do with a turn of events at Operation Grange?

Re: Interview with Father Haynes Hubbard 5 year on
The photograph of Kate is with her hands in front of her so she won't be taking communion in that particular church.
I'm protestant and when I have attended a catholic church (and the Church of England as I'm not C of E) it's normal to either place your hands in front of you OR hold your arms across your body to show the priest that you won't be receiving communion and the priest then blesses your head.
I don't see anything wrong with this photo.
What I see wrong in this photo is that this photo was taken and placed into the media.

Taking communion...or not?
I don't know, Aquila - to me it looks like Kate has just been given her communion wafer...
...by hand, rather than on the tongue. Her right forefingers are just about to pick it up.
She would then put the wafer in her mouth herself.
My thoughts only.

And against official Catholic rules... but nobody gives a toss these days.
In the old days she would have been destined for hell unless she confessed.

Judging by the holding of the cup of wine (the blood of Christ), there's a left-handed priest and a right handed one.
This may sound silly but there is a certain way of doing things in the ceremony of communion.

Your understanding that Haynes Hubbard is originally from Norfolk is neither here nor there if you can't show him as listed in Crockfords as a UK priest (that's my understanding).
Sorry to be a pedant but I'm at a loss once again as to why you've taken this reply to something I asked you onto a different thread and just put out more lack of information.
If it's your understanding HH is originally from Norfolk then you need to show this.

Norfolk...?
Hi Aquila -
Worried Mum provides a link on page 16 of this thread that describes Fr Hubbard as 'English-born'.
He is also featured on gerrymccannsblogs.co.uk's Priests gallery and appears there as 'born in Norfolk'.
That is sufficient for my understanding of the man's birthplace.
With regard to the Crockford's Clerical Directory, I believe it can be accessed in the reference section -
- of British public libraries. Perhaps your local Anglican parish has a copy you could look at?

missbeetle's understanding that Haynes Quintin Hubbard is English-born is correct as his birth is recorded in the 1968 Jul-Sept quarter register for Wayland which is a district of Norfolk.

aquila, perhaps you could visit your local library and look up a Crockford's therein. Or ask your vicar to consult his own copy. It is a fairly accessible reference book.

If you click this link: https://www.crockford.org.uk/myaccount.asp?id=134 and put Haynes Quintin Hubbard into the search box, you will get the index entry for him. You can't seen the actual entry that's in the register, unless you pay £35 registration fee.
