This really is an incredible situation. Has Amaral decided he cannot defend what he has said in the book? If he could surely he would relish his day in court seeing the McCanns squirm. if he had done this would have been fantastic for Tony. We don't know yet. Interesting times ahead.

I would think if Mr Amaral had wanted to back down he would have done a long time ago. This has been going on for a couple of years, it makes no sense for him to spend all that money on lawyers fees then back down if he thought he didn't have a good chance of winning, especially as his book ban was overturned. As someone else said, he had nothing to lose, on the other hand.......
Makes you wonder what is happening what with that strange lawyer going off to Brazil, wasn't he a witness against Mr Amaral?

As i have said, we don't know yet. We do know that if an agreement isn't reached in 6 months then the libel action will go ahead.

So they must have offered him to withdraw their case, release his assets and pay his legal expenses, on condition that he waive all present and future claims against them and keeps mum about the deal.
That's the way these things are done.

Hmmm...makes one wonder what operation Grange might have found that backs Amaral, possibly. And judging by the released funds, and having LOST two cases against Amaral already, it is evident they are not to meet the costs and compensation that were coming their way.
Although they are too cowardly to actually go to court in person, they cannot risk it as there is no chance of success.
It is also a matter of PR IMHO. Two separate people in court within a couple of weeks, and they called off the search themselves in March? Pffff. The public wouldn't be standing for that.

Perhaps, Gerry pulled out meaning Kate would have had to go it alone. This wouldn't have looked good. It makes no sense pulling out NOW when they could have done so earlier and I believe it is the McCanns who are backing out.

But equally, I can't see him offering the McCanns anything. Why should he?
