A new petition concerning Madeleine has been launched on the Prime Minister's website today. Started by CMOMM member Tony Bennett, it calls for the Home Office to publish a full report on Operation Grange. Tony has long been sceptical about the true purpose of Operation Grange. He submitted his petition several weeks ago but had to agree with the House of Commons Petition Committee to several changes in his original draft wording for legal reasons.

To order the Home Office to publish a report on the Madeleine McCann inquiry

Tony's reasons for setting up this petition are given on the Prime Minister's website, as follows:

Enquiries by British (and Portuguese) police forces have cost around £15 million in 8 years. The public is now entitled to a full report on how that has been spent. The report should cover the role of the government, the security services & UK police forces.

Madeleine was reported missing over 8 years ago. The Portuguese, Leicestershire, the Met & other police forces have spent huge amounts of time & money on the case, but there seems no prospect of further progress. Given the huge interest in the case, the public needs the fullest possible explanations and answers.

The cynic in me tells that it will never happen, it will however be very interesting to see how they get out of it.  What clause of what law can they hide behind, what by-law or government code of practice or guideline, or what human rights violation, what traffic offence? 

Short of that, should they feel compelled to respond, I foresee some vague account of income and expenditure, summarized into administration costs, campaign costs, telecom payments, website management, clothing allowance, travel expenses - in fact rather like the Find Madeleine Fund!

I'm sure the McCanns and their extensive support network will be signing, once they are acquainted with it's existence - HOLA Michael, the Wright man!  It's in their interest to know how Operation Grange has progressed over the past 4+ years - isn't it?

REPLY: Hallo, 'Alessio Tacchinardi', no idea who you are, and no, you're not me, but thank you very much for articulating comments that I've never dared utter myself but which I think fairly represent many of those who have been my fierce critics over the years.  I would only add that I also work closely with a number of marvellous individuals, most of them CMOMM members, who share my 'dog with a bone' mentality, but tend to prefer to keep in the shadows.

REPLY: Great, thank you again. And thank you very much to all who have signed so far.

The petition has only been up 14 hours and at the end of Day One, we have 509 signatures already.

After today, there are 182 signing days left. I've worked out that we can reach the 10,000-signature target by 22 April (all petitions run for just 6 months) if, from now on, we get 53 more signers every day.

That can only be done if anyone at all concerned about Operation Grange (and goodness knows, there are enough reasons for that concern) not only signs - but also actively tries to get their relatvies and friends to sign as well.

So please have a real good go at getting us to our target. 

Rebekah Brooks, Rupert Murdoch's CEO, forced Operation Grange on the Met, and I for one want to know what they've really been doing with that £12 million, and rising, for over 4 years
