The detective leading the UK review of Madeleine McCann's disappearance says they have the "best opportunity" yet to find the missing girl.
Det Ch Insp Andy Redwood told the BBC's Panorama his team were "seeking to bring closure to the case".
Madeleine, aged five at the time, went missing from a Portuguese holiday apartment five years ago this week.
The UK review began last May after Prime Minister David Cameron responded to a plea from Madeleine's parents.

DCI Redwood told Panorama, his first interview since taking on the role, that solving Madeleine's disappearance is "the ultimate objective and is our ultimate objective".
His team of 28 detectives and seven civilian support staff are working their way through an estimated 40,000 pieces of information, including reports and documents from UK police, Portuguese police and private detectives hired by the McCanns.
He said one major advantage for Operation Grange is that for the first time it has access to all of the available evidence all in one place.
"At no time before have those three elements been drawn together in one place. And so what we've done over the past number of months is to bring to one place all those pieces of the jigsaw."
DCI Redwood believes the case could be solved by reappraising the documentary evidence.
"Clearly within that material, the answer could lie," he said.
No hostility
Officers have made two trips to Spain and visited Portugal four times, most recently last week.
A review of the procedures followed in the investigation is also under way in Portugal.
It is being conducted by officers in Porto, in northern Portugal, far away from the Algarve where Madeleine went missing.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] Det Ch Insp Andy Redwood is in charge of Operation Grange, which is based at Belgravia police station
Portuguese public opinion has not been supportive of the parents of Madeleine, but DCI Redwood said he is finding no hostility from the Portuguese review team.
"Those officers are engaged, they are open, they are working with us collaboratively and I've not encountered with them any of those views."
But he said if the case is to be reopened, it is up to the Portuguese police.
"It is a sovereign decision for the Portuguese authorities. But obviously what we seek to do is to bring them the best quality information to assist them in making that decision."

I disagree. All Redwood is doing in that interview is paraphrasing the letter Kate and Gerry wrote to David!

Assuming that DCI Redwood is choosing his words with care, I do not see how closure could be brought to this case until one of two things happens: either Madeleine is found alive, or someone is charged with, and found guilty of, whatever caused her death in the apartment. A half hour programme seems barely adequate for the second option, so can we hope for the first?

Spot the difference
A key piece of the 'jigsaw' could easily have been overlooked and not joined up with another.
It is fundamental for any major incident that a case review is undertaken to identify all the avenues that could be explored that might lead to new information coming into the inquiry. The information in Madeleine's case is not even held on one central, searchable database capable of linking data.
The benefits of pulling together different bits of evidence can be enormous but until this is done we cannot be sure what, if anything, has been missed. From the McCann letter to Cameron

Just been on the news about the Madeleine Panorama programme, and they said it was on tomorrow night at 7.30.
Doh having seen extracts from it I have changed my mind. Goncalo Amaral interviewed by Richard Bilton and is asked about his book and making money out of a missing girl. Isobel Duarte is also interviewed.

Panorama also interviews former Home Secretary Alan Johnson MP, who criticises the initial Portuguese investigation of the daughter of Kate and Gerry McCann.
“It seems to be disgraceful,” says Johnson. “It didn’t seem to me that they had had the benefit of a proper police investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine.”
Johnson was the first Home Secretary to carry out a feasibility study into whether the Metropolitan Police could review the investigation. He met Madeleine’s parents and says: “I was enormously sympathetic to their case. All the stuff that appeared in certain tabloids suggesting they were the guilty party, you know it’s very difficult under that kind of saturation coverage not to start believing in some of those theories. But by the time they came in to see me I was absolutely clear that they were the victims in all this.”

#BBCnews u asked Amaral "Are you comfortable making money out of a missing girl?" Why didn't you ask #McCann s same question?
DCI Redwood also said he wanted to bring closure for the family - again an odd thing to say imo.

" Closure means establishing what has happened to Madeleine McCann.”
Nowhere in his lengthy statement does he use the word abduction. He does not mention how she was abducted, by whom, when or where.
These are what they would want to establish had they decided conclusively that an abduction had taken place. The parents are certain about what happened, not so this senior officer from what he has said.
What has happened according to her parents, who are adamant about the matter, is that she was abducted.
It is not so clear cut to DCI Redwood, or his wording would have been different imo.
adamant : refusing to be persuaded or to change one’s mind does not mean the same as certain or convinced, just stubbornly sticking to one's guns, often unreasonably: utterly unyielding in attitude or opinion in spite of all appeals, urgings, etc.

did he say the following which was quoted ?
“We are here in terms of seeking to bring closure to the case,” he said. “That would be the ultimate objective and is our ultimate objective. Closure means establishing what has happened to Madeleine McCann.”
or quoted elsewhere " closure for the family "
not the same thing..where are the sources for these 2 different quotes please?
and he does not mention abduction anywhere.

It is not surprising that Redwood is careful with his choice of words - he is leading a very sensitive investigation. It is the use of the word 'closure' that I find unusual. Other than finding Madeleine alive and well, and reuniting her with her family, there is only one other outcome that could result in closure and that is the discovery of a body or, in the absence of that scenario, the confession of an individual (or individuals) in connection with the demise of the young child.

Closure could mean the McCann's can move on with their lives because the Met review 'clears them'.

Could do Cheshire Cat, but how can they have "closure" if Madeleine is still missing. No parent could. They themselves have said they will never give up. Still a very strange word to use.

Very interesting article, I do hope Blacksmith or Dr Roberts writes a piece analysing it.
The bit where Isabel Duarte says there is public opinion weighed in favour of Amaral is, as far as I am aware, the first public declaration and/or acknowledgement of such. I thought that the official position is that there was a majority public support for the Mc's and only a few random nut jobs thought otherwise. The Panorama programme could go either way, based on that article IMHO. I saw now overall bias of favourite except from Johnson and even he said from what was in the press the less "favourable" thesis was believable.
And I may be reading too much into the semantics used, but when Redwood stated that the answer could lie in existing documents (and bearing in mind some were held back when the DVD of the files came out), these documents he obviously has in mind may possibly include KG's statement, or other people whose names are already known in the public domain. He didn't say new leads, after all. Hmm...
