Not exactly a theory, more of a hypothetical.

Kate raised the alarm at 10.00pm supposedly and knew immediately that it was an abduction because of the wooshing of the curtains and an open window.  At about the same time the Smiths were seeing a suspected abductor carrying a little girl in pyjamas through the streets towards the beach.

If Gerry and the other Tapas men had gone running through the streets in all directions to track down a man with a child (no need for searching for a lost or hiding Madeleine - they "knew" it was an abduction) perhaps they might have caught up with the abductor and been able to save Madeleine.  You can cover a lot of ground in a short time running around a small area.

All he'd have needed to say to Kate was "You wait here with the children and call the police, and we'll go looking".  Then he could have run off with the others.

It seems a bit of an oversight for parents who mislaid their child - that they might have actually been able to physically catch the man who took her and prevent her abduction.

Funny how they ran around after too.   Not looking for their daughter though.

Just looking at this link shows how small the resort was and how easy a search for a man walking carrying a child would have been  http://www.gerrymccannsblogs.co.uk/P.D.L.htm

a good point in my opinion, especially as they are so fond of running, and the rest of the gang being quite fit too.You would have thought the men at least would have been sprinting of down the streets raising hell and stopping anyone carrying a child !

Surely they would have gone off running in the direction of JT's "sighting"...they would have been desperately calling out Madleine's name, banging on van doors, checking in ditches and abandoned houses along the route the abductor took...would they not? But of course, JT didn't want to upset the McCanns and so didn't mention it to them immediately...nothing suspicious there then.

Well they're good at organisation, given how quickly they were able to set up a media campaign and a company to manage their fund, so it can't have been beyond them to organise an immediate search - four men searching in four different directions would have been effective.

They've criticised the Portuguese police for not doing enough, but they were the first people to know she was missing, presumed abducted, so it was up to them to start the search before the police got there.

The Tanner sighting made it seem not such a big deal that they didn't search - the abductor would have had a good three quarters of an hour to make their escape before the alarm was raised so even if they had searched it would probably have been futile.  Now that is no longer part of the investigation, the Smith sighting happening immediately at the time Kate found Madeleine's bed empty means there was a small chance of preventing the abduction.  If there was an abduction of course.

Gerry's witness statement says they searched the Ocean Club, no further.
