Kevin Halligen: Madeleine McCann parents may sue fraudster accused of £300,000 fund con
18 May 2013 00:00
It is understood that Kate and Gerry McCann are now considering suing Halligen for allegedly fleecing their fund
Fraudster: Kevin Halligen
A dodgy “detective” accused of conning £300,000 from the Madeleine McCann fund is being kicked out of the US – and could now face justice in Britain.
Kevin Halligen was extradited to America five months ago over claims he cheated former business partners out of £1.3million.
Yesterday the 51-year-old admitted wire fraud in a deal with prosecutors in Washington DC.
He will be freed from jail next month, due to time he has already served, then deported.
It is understood that Kate and Gerry McCann are now considering suing Halligen for allegedly fleecing their fund.
He could also be arrested if the couple make a formal complaint.
In 2008, Halligen’s company Oakley International signed a £500,000 deal to help find missing Madeleine.
But the Surrey-based Irishman’s contract was terminated early without full payment after fund organisers decided he had failed to fulfil the agreement.
He was then arrested in Oxford in November 2009 after fleeing Washington when the US government began seeking an indictment over the wire fraud.
A source said: “Halligen would con his own grandmother he is that ruthless.
"The fact he gave the McCanns false hope and took so much money is unforgivable.”
In Washington federal court yesterday Halligen admitted persuading the Dutch company Trafigura to send £1.3million to his personal account in 2006.
Halligen told the court he bought a luxury six-bedroom house with some of the money.
It was supposed to be used to help free two of the company’s executives who were being held in the Ivory Coast on charges of dumping toxic waste.
Halligen will be sentenced on June 27 and, under the deal, freed and deported.

Re: McCanns may SUE Kevin Halligen
I don't think so!
Remember that Halligen had 'cosy' little chats with KM at Rothley Manor.
He would know, as the saying goes, 'where the bodies are buried'
They WILLINGLY paid him.
He did not steal money from them, they GAVE money to him.

Re: McCanns may SUE Kevin Halligen
It's NOT going to happen.
Or, they will have to sue every one of their dodgy PI, who allegedly were paid, but did not deliver on the job.

Re: McCanns may SUE Kevin Halligen
What was it that Kate said about coincidences? 3 or more and it isn't coincidence ?
We have seen in the news recently
Murat calling for a reconstruction and claiming that the tapas group should return to Portugal and account for their movements over 2 days.
Kate returning to Portugal for an anniversary visit, allegedly to meet with friends.
Kate and Gerry looking the most devastated we have seen them in 6 years, Gerry especially looking as if he is carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.
SY releasing their statement to the press.
Halligen , pleading guilty, due to return to UK in next month.
That adds up to more than 3.
Something happening for sure imo.

This would be the first thing I would do, make an official complaint to police and get him arrested.
If they feel they have been "fleeced" then imo they MUST do this and try and get him imprisoned.
If they felt that prison would be fitting for Tony who was asking questions to try and find out what happened to Maddie, then it must follow, surely, that prison would be fitting for this man?

Re: McCanns may SUE Kevin Halligen
It seems likely to me that Kevin Halligen knows things about the McCanns that they wouldn't want to be made public so I'll be very surprised if they sue him.

Re: McCanns may SUE Kevin Halligen
You would think that someone like Halligen would be top of the priority list to be sued by the McCann's instead of the people who have been trying to help them

And, conversely, if & when they fail to sue, that on its own will speak volumes, won't it?

Re: McCanns may SUE Kevin Halligen
Clarence Mitchell is on record as saying Halligen didn't con them. They were apparently happy with his work. What will they be suing him for?
Nah. It won't happy!

Re: McCanns may SUE Kevin Halligen
Desparte times mean desperate measures.
IMO they are fishing around for income and if KH does have any info pushing him in this respect may make him reveal what he does know.
Unless they can arrange a "what's in it for him deal" it's not going to happen.
Difficult decision for TM.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if they sue him. He is in a vulnerable situation so should be easy to kick him now he is down.
Money seems to rule from what I have seen.

But we've got all Clarence Mitchell's pronouncements on record. Hopefully, if the couple decide to sue, Clarence will be subpoenaed by the court on the request of Halligen's lawyers. Now that I would love to see.

Re: McCanns may SUE Kevin Halligen
They won't sue him, imo, because it would certainly drag Brian Kennedy, their millionaire backer, who is going to give the McCanns his ENTIRE fortune, unconditionally, that set up the Halligen 'contract' into a possible court room appearance, with the inevitable questions about Mr Kennedys various 'contacts' with a certain RM, a named arguido, in PDL.
re: "The stake out"!
re: Kennedys supposed 'offer' of employment.
All a bit odd because we have had KM saying she wanted to 'kill' Murat and then her millionaire 'backer' offering the man she wanted 'killed' a job!
ETA: OT but do we know if Jenny Murats book is released.
I imagine there would be a few uncomplimentary statements in it about the Mcs and their 'friends'
Maybe also why KM was in PDL. "Jenny, Robert and me are bestest friends forever, NOW"
