Sky Sources: Brooks Among Hacking Arrests

Former News Of The World editor Rebekah Brooks and her racehorse trainer husband Charlie are among six people arrested by police investigating phone hacking, according to Sky sources.

Five men and one woman were detained this morning on suspicion of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, Scotland Yard said.

Brooks' former PA was arrested on a similar charge earlier this year.

The co-ordinated arrests were made by officers from Operation Weeting, the Metropolitan Police investigation into illegal hacking of voicemail messages.

Brooks and her husband were at home in Oxfordshire when they had a very early call from the police, Sky News crime correspondent Martin Brunt said.

Scotland Yard said the four other men - aged 39, 46, 38 and 48 - were arrested at properties in Hampshire, London and Hertfordshire.

A number of addresses connected to the arrests are being searched, police added.

The former newspaper editor and ex-News International chief executive was arrested and bailed last summer on suspicion of phone hacking and corruption.

Her lawyer has said she denies committing any criminal offence.

Brooks was the editor of the News Of The World (NOTW) and The Sun before becoming chief executive of News International in 2009.

A public furore erupted last July after it was revealed that a private detective working for the NOTW hacked the mobile phone of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

Brooks resigned as News International chief executive last year.

Charlie Brooks is an old friend of Prime Minister David Cameron - they were at Eton together and maintain a close friendship.

How can anyone be arrested twice? It's very diabolical reporting.

I thought she's on bail. Hopefully someone is punished by jail sentence for this farcical. It has gone on long enough. Hopefully those elites high up who abused their position are punished properly to send a proper message out.

IMO, James Murdoch and Brooke should have been taken into custody and bail refused and have the truth tortured out of them to save the Govt wasting money on an Inquiry just for the same purpose.

She is on bail for the original offence. She has now been arrested for a totally different one, namely conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

His arrest on the day before the Cheltenham Gold Cup is very significant, and sends out the message to everyone else - that this team is totally independent of any political or social pressure., and is doing its job properly.

Were the hacks just desperate to be the first into the office on Saturday morning to start work on the historic paper [Sunday edition of Sun] ? Er, no. Having noticed the fortnightly pattern behind the arrests of their colleagues - four on 28 January, another five on 11 February - they were keen not be be at home should the police come calling at their own addresses in the early hours of the following morning.

Or alternatively, that whoever has ultimate control is making a point. I've learned enough of realpolitik to know that powerful individuals do not get caught up in due process and that when something erupts into the public arena it is the result of some manoeuverings at a high level. The interesting thing here is the closeness of all this to Cameron - is someone applying pressure to him? If so, to what end?

If the McCanns phones weren't hacked, then they were unique: it's becoming clear that everyone with any link to a hot news story in the 2000s was hacked. Yet the McCanns were immune? Though interestingly, within a few hours of Madeleine disappearing, David Payne had somehow got everyone fixed up with pay as you go phones....had they been warned about hacking dangers by someone in the know (Clarence? Woolfall?)

I think, although may be wrong, that most of the hacking took place pre 2007. It is conceivable that the McCanns, if they did have something to hide, would certainly have changed their voicemail pin codes more regularly, making hacking more difficult.

Mind of an innocent? ab...so..mccann..lutely NOT! But I read CM warned them about police surveillance.

Question is : did he tell them because he did not know the truth and thought he was protecting innocents, or did he warn them precisely because he knew?
