FACTS DAY 2
From Kate's Diary, Friday 4th May 2007
"No sleep, Gerry and I started looking through the streets around 6.00am as it was starting to get light. Nobody Around. Why not?

Carlos Manuel Carvalho Lacão
Occupation: GNR Officer
He has been a GNR officer since 1988. He holds the post of soldier and currently works in the Portimao Territorial Group, working within the forensics service.
On 4th May he was called at about 01h15 when he was asleep at home, requesting him to appear at the Lagos GNR post as a small girl had disappeared. After arriving at the GNR post with his colleagues Morais and two dogs (Numi and Kit), German Shepherd dogs, which made up the search team, they immediately left for P da L. They arrived at about 02h30.
They finished the searches at about 07h00 AM.

At least this dog handler got out of bed in the middle of the night, loaded up his dogs and hit the ground running in terms of a search, beginning a mere three hours after the alarm was raised for what could, at this stage, still have been a potential wake-and-wander situation.
He didn't wait in his home until it got light in the morning. He acted when action was needed.
He joined around 60 other people in the search (who were unconnected and not responsible for the child), although there were a couple of people that night who stayed in doors, and one managed to have a nap.

Re: FACTS DAY 2
I know, Smokeandmirrors, and I just can't believe how unappreciative the McCann's are of all the money, time and effort that has been put in on their behalf, or actually, because of them. In their situation I would have been so apologetic, to the police, the volunteers, etc etc. Even Mrs Fenn, disturbed by their children crying for over an hour. None of it is ever the McCann's fault and everybody, according to them, is always being unkind to them. Incredible.

And if the case is reopened in Portugal following the SY review who is going to foot the bill? Not the McCanns, that's for sure. They'll still be at home in Rothley counting all their pennies in their huge piggybank while the PJ are giving up their holidays and weekends starting all over again from 3rd May 2007.

Re: FACTS DAY 2
I should think Scotland Yard and the PJ would want to work together on it Newintown, not least to repair the damage to the relationship between the two countries. Scotland Yard must realise what we and the PJ already know by now.

As it was a crime committed in Portugal I would think that the Portugese would be more involved, with SY just putting in their "penny's worth" every so often when asked. Only guessing of course.
Would SY be able to question people for instance if they are unsure about previous statements given or would it have to be the PJ; perhaps PeterMac may be able to answer that.

Re: FACTS DAY 2
If it is indeed true, as according to Amaral, that the investigation was effectively halted due to "political interference" from the UK, I can't see them in a great hurry to spend more millions of the Portugese taxpayers money. After the slating and criticism I doubt they give a hoot anymore. Never mind the negative publicity for what is in reality a decent and friendly holiday destination. The way they have been spoken about, they probably don't want to give this case any more than a two fingered salute.
ETA: If the Portugese do open the case again, can you just imagine the reunion?
Kate: "Hello, F****ng T*$$er, how are you? Long time no see. And Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, are they well? I know I wasn't very chatty the last time we met, but pop the kettle on and lets have a nice catch up"
