How to Spot a Liar - TED talk
I don't know whether this has been posted before but I found this TED talk on how to spot a liar VERY revealing. It describes (and shows) exactly the same behaviour Kate and Gerry display. Specifically, it shows that the clusters of body language Gerry display and his desire to over-explain with trivia (his blogs) are distraction devices. Also it shows video of two 'grieving' mothers of murdered children: one genuine and one not.
It's 20 mins long, but well worth it! [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Very interesting indeed rightgoodlaugh, thank you for posting.
I noted the way the lady said that contempt was shown by a curled lip

Not sure Kate's curled lips mean contempt, they look more like boredom.

I love TED! Try and see the one about the marshmallows and the children. Brilliant.
Very good on the lying, seeing Clinton shaking his head and saying I didn NOT, double negative!
Interesting: 'that woman' distancing oneself from the subject.
Gerry saying: 'it's about this girl' .
Then the movement of the mouth, contempt, now Kate has done that a lot! I think it's also a sort of 'can't be bothered' movement.
Then the of using more official terms, Gerry in the Australian interview (see also Dr. Roberts on that )Did you kill your daughter? Categorically deny etc.
And then of course: the smirks!

Wouldn't it be very revealing and powerful if some clever poster/video maker could take this TED talk and mirror it with videos of the McCanns illustrating EVERY SINGLE example that this expert on lying describes. The McCanns tick all the lying boxes - it's as if it has been written for them!

Is this when Kate was referring to Madeleine - "she just moved on" when Madeleine asked the question "why didn't you come when Sean and I were crying". So who is she showing contempt for - the interviewer or her daughter?

Come on guys, give these two a break, haven't they suffered enough? This proof of lying is totally unscientific and everyone is different. If he knew he was doing it he'd stop wouldn't he? He's not stupid he's a doctor. No, he's not lying, it's obvious he has fleas or an itchy skin condition, that's why? Give the poor devastated couple a break, after all you don't know how you'd act if it was you!

They are SO brazen with it - I wonder how they feel about 'supporters'. I can't help the feeling that although they are K+G's bread and butter, they must have a giggle at their stupidity? I like to think maybe they have grudging respect for those of us sensible enough to see through them.
Second thoughts, scrub that. Don't think 'respect' appears in Team McCann's dictionary - zero for Maddie and her memory, zero for those members of the public who believe them, even less for the police who tried to find their daughter. I don't think they have self-respect either! If they did, they never would have done the things they've done since 2007.

Re: How to Spot a Liar - TED talk
brilliant, brilliant video! It's sooooooooo obvious 'that pair' (no, I am NOT lying!) have been lying all along, SOOOO obvious. There is not one instant that I can recall that I have genuinely felt sorrow or deep emotion, worry, anxiety over their daughter's 'disappearance'. All staged. The positioning of them whilst being interviewed, ear tugging, scratching, blinking, indirect answers and so much more. Almost word for word of the description in the video. I loved the part about getting suspects to recount their story backwards. Excellent tactic! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

ha! Did you spot anything untoward that way, as opposed to the other way, or are both ways as bad??? I can't bring myself to read it.. I barely manage to watch that pair on any videos, they make me churn inside! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

What about the video on you tube Gerry McCann is happy!
Few days after his daughter is missing.
And is it me or are the Mccanns giving too many excuses in their interviews? To explain why they are coping really well, they mention the public have given them strength. There is too much of this.
They Seem to need to give explanations.
in their interviews they also hold hands and talk over each other when they feel stuck, they give each other support when their talking instead of when crying.

Nothing wrong with they supporting each other. Nor with them ot crying. People react differently in moments of stress and how many times we saw ( not comparing, just saying ) guilty people crying on tv?
Ok he was happy laughing few days after his daughter disappearing, but what about having a couple hours of sleep in the very night she was gone?

That was ver good, rightgoodlaugh and I wonder if some of us can recognise these signs instinctively, without actually knowing the science. The reason I wonder, is because there are so many of us out there who have known darn well from the start that we were being lied to! It may be why this case remains so controversial. Some cannot, or won't, see what we can, and it is so vexing.
This hugely informative short talk illustrates pretty much everything we have suspected. As you say we have seen an awful lot of these clusters in interviews over the years, the shoulder shrugging, the saying 'yes' while nodding 'no' (there was a classic Dave Edgar doing this) and of course, the curled lip sneer and the smug smiles.
Thank you very much for posting this. Coincidently I had recently been introduced to Ted Talks by my student son, and am now a huge fan.

Yes Ayniia, he did sleep that night, they also never ran out searching with Jane Tanner who saw which way the man headed, how dumb is that!
What I meant by supporting each other was, take a look at the interviews, whenever they feel awkward and look terribly guilty (when speaking) that's when they squeeze each others hand or take over.
They need each other to answer the questions.
He doesn't support her when she's about to pretend to cry. He supports her when she's looking guilty watch their eyes.
They look like liars in their interviews.
Yes I know people react differently, but after six years? Its not just the one time he was caught looking very happy.
They look guilty as hell, don't know who they think they're fooling.

If JT did see the man why didnt she tell the Police quickly?
It's those of the WTF moments just like Kate who on discovering the open window did look out the window to see whether Maddie has fallen out.
We are talking about a bunch of intelligent professionals.

as Mr. said, the abductor was nearly caught by Jane Tanner.
Nearly caught eerrrrrr how was he nearly caught - by the time she told anybody about her sighting of the abductor he could have been in Morocco, Spain, New Zealand, blah blah blah - take your pick.

Brilliant video
Ayniia, thanks,
brilliant, hadn't seen that video!
They blame the Portuguese, but if Madeleine had a Portugese passport it would have been more difficult to get her out of Portugal.
Portuguese nationals, children, can not leave Portugal without both their parents without some kind of consent. Many have been left behind! I know it's a lot harder, but can't remember how it works exactly.
With a British passport your child doesn't need both parents, with the Portuguese passport or ID they do, if I'm not wrong.

Maybe intelligent professionals but sometimes looks like it wasn't exactly planned properly.
Like it was a sudden death, and they panicked and weren't thinking straight as we can see in their statements. JT speaking out much later too wasn't well planned.
Intelligent are the Portuguese too! educated, I heard they can't leave school until they've passed all their tests, before moving on to the next year, sometimes have to repeat the whole year again!
Makes brilliant minds though!

IF Madeleine had been taken, It would've been very easy to get her anywhere in the [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] area. But surely not so easy to Morocco . British blonde girl missing with her face all over the news in the next day being taken to Morocco and no one spotting her, I won't say impossible but very close. Also we know from her family she was "a screamer" so I really doubt she'd go unnoticed.
Also It's basic and in need of no explanation that publicizing her coloboma would very likely be BAD for her. But wait "it was good marketing". We don't need to doubt the Mccanns, they did all the work on that for us.

Five ways to detect a liar
Prof Richard Wiseman, a Psychologist from Hertfordshire University outlined ways to spot a liar;
Prof Richard Wiseman, a Psychologist from Hertfordshire University outlined ways to spot a liar;
- Me, myself I: Liars make up stories that never actually happened, and so tend to reduce the number of times they refer to themselves. Look out for any sudden drop in words like me, mine and I
- Shifty: Lying is difficult and people tend not to move around when they are concentrating on something. Be wary if a person suddenly becomes very still
- Umm ... err: Liars are far more hesitant than truth tellers and tend to stumble over their words. Listen out for tell-tale umms and errs.
- Timing: Liars often have to think about what they are going to say before they speak. Be suspicious if someone suddenly pauses before starting to answer a question.
- Token gesture: Liars tend to move their hands around more than truth tellers. Be wary if someone suddenly starts covering up their mouth or touching their hair as they chat.

Where did that quote come from aiyoyo, was it from K McCann's book, I haven't seen it mentioned before. I haven't bought the book (didn't want to add to their £millions).

Actually having thought about this, I think it is quite significant as it is telling everyone that Madeleine would have been able to climb up to the window and fall out of it. If she wasn't tall enough to get to the windowsill and fall out Kate Mcann wouldn't have mentioned it, so are we being told by K McCann's subconscious that this is what happened to Madeleine if she was left alone for 10/20/30 minutes whilst her parents were elsewhere doing other things more interesting than looking after their own kids, IMO. Did she fall out the window on her head when she wasn't supervised, is that why she was sleepy when KM brought her back from the kiddies play group? More questions, questions, questions........
ETA: I wonder if the PJ checked for blood outside around the apartment and under the window, that would be interesting to know.

I took the opportunity to insert examples of the McCanns lying into Meyer's lecture - think it makes a compelling case!
