Pope Francis: 'About 2%' of Catholic clergy paedophiles

Earlier this month the Pope begged forgiveness from victims of child abusers within the Church

Pope Francis has been quoted as saying that reliable data indicates that "about 2%" of clergy in the Catholic Church are paedophiles.

The Pope said that abuse of children was like "leprosy" infecting the Church, according to the Italian La Repubblica newspaper.
He vowed to "confront it with the severity it demands".

But a Vatican spokesman said the quotes in the newspaper did not correspond to Pope Francis's exact words.
The BBC's David Willey in Rome says there is often a studied ambiguity in Pope Francis' off-the-cuff statements.
He wants to show a more compassionate attitude towards Church teaching than his predecessors, but this can sometimes cause consternation among his media advisers, our correspondent adds.
Anger at Vatican

In the interview, Pope Francis was quoted as saying that the 2% estimate came from advisers. It would represent around 8,000 priests out of a global number of about 414,000.

While the incidence of paedophilia in the general population is not accurately known, some estimates have put it at less than five percent.
"Among the 2% who are paedophiles are priests, bishops and cardinals. Others, more numerous, know but keep quiet. They punish without giving the reason," Pope Francis was quoted as saying.
"I find this state of affairs intolerable," he went on.

Above the interview La Repubblica ran the headline: "Pope says: Like Jesus, I shall use a stick against paedophile priests."
Last year Pope Francis strengthened the Vatican's laws against child abuse and earlier this month begged forgiveness from the victims of sexual abuse by priests, at his first meeting with victims since his election.
Many survivors of abuse by priests are angry at what they see as the Vatican's failure to punish senior officials who have been accused of covering up scandals.

Asked in the same La Repubblica interview about the celibacy rule for priests, Pope Francis recalled that it was adopted 900 years after the death of Jesus Christ and pointed out that the Eastern Catholic Church allows its priests to marry.
"The problem certainly exists but it is not on a large scale. It will need time but the solutions are there and I will find them."

Dear Francis,
I tend to think you`re expecting a bit much when you ask the victims of these paedophile priests to forgive their abusers.

Esther Rantzen said Baroness Butler-Sloss was "possibly the wrong person" to lead the inquiry.

Esther, why are you so passive? What you should be saying is "Butler-Sloss IS the wrong person".

Quote from above link:

1: Firstly lets have a look at her association with Jimmy (so-vile) Savile. Rantzen DID know of rumours and did nothing
But she DID say something. She said that it was known about J Savile, but "it was classier to ignore it"

The Bible speaks of us all being at enmity with God, wanting to go on our own way, and not obey His rules and follow Him.

The converted sinner does not stop sinning, but when he does sin, he comes to his Creator and asks for forgiveness:

1 John 1 v 9: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (written around 90 A.D. by one of Christ's 12 apostles, John (who also wrote John's Gospel), whilst under house arrest on the Greek island of Patmos).

A classic example of a convert who sinned after conversion was John Newton, an eighteenth century slave trader - but in the end he was enable to see the error of his ways - and asked for, and received, mercy from his Creator, giving us the hymn: 'Amazing Grace':

Would you let a repentant pedo near your children?

Of course not.

Forgive (maybe) but don't forget.

Accused in priests’ paedophile ring in Granada given conditional bail
The four men spent 48 hours in police custody but have now been freed pending the results of investigation into the charges against them

The priest, RománMartínez, leader of the alleged group of paedophiles in Granada, has escaped jail by posting bail of 10,000 euros.
The other three people, two priests and a teacher of religion, accused in the case of sexual abuse against at least two minors, are also at liberty with various conditions.
These include being prohibited from approaching the two men involved and of having any form of communication with them. They are also ordered to attend court every 15 days.
The four men were arrested on Monday at one of the homes used by the group and are accused of a number of sexual abuse offences though the courts have not yet specified the exact nature of the charges.
The judge presiding over the case has stressed the difficulty of the process because of the long time delay between the events and the investigation - a period of seven years for the first victim and as many as 18 years for the second victim who came forward earlier this week.
The second man, also a former altar boy, testified on Monday, with his lawyer beside him, and his statement strengthens the case against the group.
None of the rest of the alleged victims have come forward yet though new testimonies have not been ruled out.
The Pope speaks out
Pope Francis has made a public statment on the case to the press.
Speaking on Tuesday on the plane taking him back to Rome from Strasbourg, the Pope said, “I got [the victim’s] letter, I read it, I rang him personally. I wrote to the bishop to get the investigation started and it went ahead. How am I living with this? With pain, a great deal of pain. But the truth is the truth and we should not conceal it”.
The house where the four accused men were arrested, in Los Pinillos de Pinos Genil, has been searched, among 20 other properties owned and used by the group, and two computers were found with all their files completely wiped. In a further twist the house was apparently burgled two week ago and at least three computers were stolen.   [How VERY convenient ! !]
The four accused men have protested their innocence. Sources close to them have said they are concerned about how their families will be affected and about the damage caused by the case to the Catholic church.
