Gerry's Albufeira trip 1994

From Gerry's statement we know he was on vacation in Albfeira in 1994 for playing golf:

cite: "When asked he says that he had been in Portugal previously in 1994, staying in an apartment near to Albufeira. This is the first time he has returned to Portugal.
His desire to know Portugal in 1994 was due to the fact of playing golf, as our country is known for the excellent conditions for practising this sport."

At this time he was I think a student age 26 and not together with Kate.

It could be of real interest to ask the questions:

1. were exactly did he stay there? At aht accomodation (Hotel, Camping...?)

2. there are several golf clubs in and around Albufeira. Where exactly?

3. not so important, but: How long did he stay? Alone or with friends? who?

Does anybody have more information on the 1994 trip?

I have to admit that I can't see why a holiday 20 years ago before the McCanns were even together could have any relevance to events in 2007 and subsequently.

Couple? Few years? Methinks golfing trips might have been regular and it's therefore all the more amazing that the G-word is never used in connection with Gerry, PdL and the four golfcourses there....

Robert Murat, when first questioned about his actions from 1st to 4th May, lied by claiming he did not attend a meeting at the Palmeras Golf Club.

17 different lies.

The 'golf club lie' was one of his 17 lies, which he was forced to retract on his second round of interviews on 10 and 11 July after the PJ confronted him with mobile 'phone antenna 'pings' which proved his earlier lies.

Murat said that when first interviewd on 14 May he was 'too tired to remember the truth'.

And there are still people out there who think he has nothing to do with the disappearance of Madeleine McCann!

All those who have admitted to being at the Palmeras Golf Club meeting have been evasive about what that meeting actually was about.

Here’s a convenient summary of Murat's new account of events (10 & 11 July), and how these contradicted his earlier account of events (14 May):

1.     Remembers that on 1 May he tried to contact Jorge da Silva.

2.     Remembers that on 2 May he didn’t leave home at 10.30am but instead had a meeting with Sergei Malinka at the Batista Supermarket.

3.     He had in fact taken Michaela and Malinka back to his mother’s house in Praia da Luz for a further discussion, something he’d omitted to tell the police in the first interview.

4.     He now remembered visiting his bank and paying in 287.51 euros.

5.     He now remembered he’d called at the home of Francisco Pagarete, his lawyer, that morning.

6.     He now remembers that he had met Francisco Pagarete that afternoon.

7.     He now remembers that another of Jorge’s sons was present at their meeting in the café in the afternoon.

8.     The meeting in the café went on much longer than he had said previously.

9.     He thinks that Michaela Walczuk’s husband Luis Antonio may not have been present at Michaela’s house that evening, contrary to what he had previously said.

10.            On 3 May, he had not woken at 9.00am as previously stated, but at 8.00am.

11.            He had not driven to Michaela’s house that morning after 10.00am as previously stated; instead he had left home at 8.45am for a 9.30am meeting with the owner of the business tourist complex called ‘Gold Bunker’ in the Espiche district and her father-in-law.

12.            He now remembered that he and Michaela had visited two apartments for about 30 minutes, probably on the afternoon of 3 May.

13.            He and Michaela had lunch with the owner of the ‘Gold Bunker’ complex and her father-in-law, a fact he had not disclosed to police before.

14.            Michaela’s daughter C______ was not with them that day, contrary to his previous story.

15.            They went to the Palmares Golf Club in the afternoon, another fact Murat had failed to disclose.

16.            He now admitted to making two telephone calls, to Sergei Malinka and Michaela, at 11.39pm and 11.40pm that night.

17.            He previously said he had woken at 9.00am on Friday 4 May. He now admitted he had telephoned Michaela at 8.27am and must have got up earlier.

I agree tigger and this interest also seems to extend to Robert Murat. I have also noticed that many of the golf clubs around PdeL also deal in real estate so access to empty property? Especially as Robert Murat has admitted in his later statements (10th 11th July) that he has business links with at least one.

Edward Smethurst - the McCanns' 'co-ordinating lawyer' and since 2009 Director of Madeleine's Fund - has holidayed at an apartment every year since 1999 in Praia da Luz.

But while property is certainly amongst his interests, swinging a golf club has never been listed by him as an interest.

Albufeira is a long way from PdL. But he could certainly have been making contacts. He seems to be the kind of bloke who forms or tries to form a connection with everybody he ever meets.

ha ha no not a swinging golf club as well!

Yes v interesting about ES - what I am trying to say is that all emphasis seems to be put on evidence/activities as 5a and the OC yet the MCs could have had extensive and long-standing contacts in the region, access to property, facilities etc both via R Murat (long time property developer in the area), and others including ES.

Also the property and DNA findings at Burgau and who knows what else. Especially as there does not seem to be much trace of MBM at 5a - where was she? Where were they on days unaccounted for in the bewk?

I think there is a bigger picture than just the OC and it's environs. Golf could be significant in that it is a club for 'like-minded' people to meet up.

All in my own opinion of course.

It could have relevance to know the answers to your questions. If Gerry was involved in covering up his daughters death, we do tend to go where we know, maybe theses areas should be searched...
Nothing to loose in checking this angle...
