Metropolitan Police - Dog support unit
Who are we and what do we do?

The role of the Dog Support Unit (DSU) is to provide police dog and handler teams to support their colleagues across London, and to respond to emergency calls where their unique skills can be used to help make London safer

The dogs and handlers have a variety of skills.

General Purpose Dogs, usually German or Belgian Shepherd Dogs, patrol London with their handlers. They have a range of skills, including:

  • Searching for suspects and missing people.
  • Locating objects dropped or concealed during a criminal incident.
  • Following a track left by a person on the ground.
  • Chasing and detaining a person who runs away when challenged to stop.
  • Disarming violent armed suspects and controlling hostile crowds.

Some of the more specialist skills include:

  • ‘Line access’ work - Some officers and their dogs are ‘line access’ trained. The officers often have to get themselves and their dogs up and down the outside of buildings or even boats using abseiling skills. The dogs are trained to cope with being tied to their handlers, via a harness, whilst this is done.
  • Supporting MPS Firearms Teams.

All of these things are done under the strict control of the handler.

Some dogs, particularly Spaniels and Labradors, are trained to find specific scents:

  • Drugs, both hidden and being carried on a person in public.
  • Cash, (banknotes).
  • Explosives, of various types.
  • Firearms.
  • Human remains and blood.

Some of the above skills may be combined in one dog team, but in the case of Explosives Search Dogs, the dogs only search for one thing.

Where do we operate?

Anywhere it is safe to do so, in London and sometimes outside. They work from bases in five Boroughs, namely Hillingdon, Redbridge, Lewisham, Croydon and Wandsworth.

  • Search crime scenes, buildings, open spaces, vehicles, vessels, and aircraft: Transport infrastructure centres and checkpoints are all regularly patrolled.
  • Assist in executing search warrants.
  • Protect people and places from terrorism.

Dr Martin Roberts: "The evidence is that these are the pjyamas Madeleine wore on holiday in Praia da Luz. They were photographed and the photo handed to a press agency, who released it on 8 May, as the search for Madeleine continued. The McCanns held up these same pyjamas at two press conferences on 5 & 7June 2007. How could Madeleine have been abducted?"

Amelie McCann (aged 2): "Maddie's jammies!".

I was watching 'Embarrassing Bodies' the other night and they had a sniffer dog on there who was trained to sniff out bed bugs in a mattress.

This amazing video from HiDeHo shows how incredibly good the dogs are.

It has footage of a murder victim found 10' below the surface with piles of MEAT on top to attempt to distract the dogs and pinpointed the body within acres of land. The meat did not distract the dogs! Plus it explains the dogs nose and its sense of smell, which humans do not have so most people do not understand the dogs and how they can smell what we cannot

"10 acres of land, buried 10' down, this case would not have been solved without the dogs. Amazing footage!"

Dogs have in excess of 200 million smells compared to a human of a mere 5 and 10 million. A huge massive significant difference, plus the dogs have 2 passages which humans do not have. Added as well, that you cannot tell a dog to lie

Admittedly this article is not about a cadaver dog but it just goes to show that a couple of cycles in an automatic washing machine with Unilever's finest to remove suntan cream is possibly not going to fool a highly trained dog. If a bottle of Old Spice (that would stun an elephant at a hundred yards) can't do it.....
