Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry have long believed a camera network in the region may have helped prevent her disappearance or helped in the search.

Not leaving the children alone in the first place would have been an even better deterrent than a CCTV camera.

Now that Kate has all this money, maybe it would be a good gesture to donate a CCTV camera to the holiday resort to help prevent this happening again and to thank the residents who searched for Madeleine while Kate waited indoors because it was too dark for her to search.

Maybe Kate and Gerry should consider getting a CCTV in their front garden just in case one of the twins gets abducted via the unlocked front door while they're dining in their back garden.

CCTV TOO COSTLY TO SAVE TOTS LIKE MADELEINE MCCANN

ABOVE: Madeleine McCann’s parents believe a camera network may have helped prevent her disappearance 12th June 2011 By Jonathan Corke

BRITISH children on holiday in Portugal’s Algarve are still “wide open” to another Madeleine McCann-style abduction because authorities refuse to install CCTV.
Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry have long believed a camera network in the region may have helped prevent her disappearance or helped in the search.

Despite a campaign to have a CCTV network covering the Algarve holiday resorts, officials say they cannot justify the cost.

Now there are fears that without the deterrent another child could be snatched.

Former Algarve tourism chief Antonio Pina said: “For many years I have been fighting for CCTV in the Algarve as this would help the situation of increasing the police presence and creating a better feeling of security.
“Unfortunately, I have found that those in authority have a very small mentality when it comes to introducing this measure.
“This is a simple answer and it is crazy that it has not already been brought in.”
In the UK there are more than 4.2million CCTV cameras capturing each person up to 300 times a day. Portugal’s lack of cameras has meant that in the four years since she vanished from Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007, Madeleine has not
been caught on film once.

Doctors Kate and Gerry, from Rothley, Leics, believe their daughter, who was just three when she disappeared, may have been found had there been greater CCTV coverage.

The couple’s spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “Kate and Gerry would welcome the idea of greater surveillance in areas like that where families are on holiday.”

Perish the thought that I am being cynical but, if there had been any cameras in PDL in May 2007, what are the odds that they would have been found not to be working at the critical moment in the same way as happened in the London bombings of 7th July 2005, the murder by the police two weeks later of Jean Charles de Menezes and even in Paris on the night that Princess Diana died?

So it's Portugal's fault for not having CCTV now? Cameras could have helped prevent her disappearance? I think leaving her alone was responsible for that. As for the 4.2 million cameras in the UK? How many have disappeared and they have even caught them on CCTV and still not found them Claudia Lawrence is one that immediately comes to mind.

As I remember, wasn't there a camera belonging to a local hotel or business that may have caught the abductor (assuming he went off in the direction described by Jane Tanner) but that it had been wiped by the time plod got round to asking for it?

I do wonder if it is this sort of comment from the McCann's that riles some people.

Yes, it is a preventative measure that could lessen the odds of another child abduction there but cameras should not be expected to replace parental responsibility. First and foremost, parents should ensure that they are not buggering off and leaving their children alone in holiday apartments whilst they go off for dinner with their pals.

I do wish the media would reinforce that message before looking for secondary measures. Surely if there were adequate babysitting arrangements in place the need for cameras would not be so necessary anyway.

CCTV TOO COSTLY TO SAVE TOTS LIKE MADELEINE MCCANN Empty The uses of CCTV footage

Post by Guest 12.06.11 16:23

Very true Baronstu. There are certainly times when criminals are apprehended when they have been seen on CCTV but, unless it is being monitored 24/7, it is unlikely to prevent any crimes in progress. It's not unheard of; I remember hearing on one of those police camera action sort of programmes that a man was seen dragging a girl off into bushes and she was able to be rescued because there was someone watching it.

Surely if it is being used properly - with film in it - it can act as a deterrent just as bobbies on the beat were when we had them on the beat of course.

CCTV TOO COSTLY TO SAVE TOTS LIKE MADELEINE MCCANN Empty CCTV cameras in PdL

Post by Jill Havern 13.06.11 12:11

By Astro

A small - and personal - clarification about a recent article in the British press:

In their apparently ceaseless effort to prevent British subjects from ever setting foot in the Algarve again, the McCanns (conveniently) forget that the main reason that there are no cctv cameras in any public places, on Portuguese soil, is a Constitutional safeguard: the very same safeguard that they (conveniently) used to justify their attempt to silence former Judiciary Police coordinator Gonçalo Amaral.

The absence of cctv cameras covering public areas in Portugal is due to our strict privacy laws, which protect our citizens' personality and private life, and rule out any type of unauthorized capture of image and/or sound in public areas.

Naturally, there are some people in Portugal who would be prepared to give up some of that privacy, if indeed the presence of cctv cameras would help reduce the crime rate, acting as a factor to dissuade potential criminals. But it seems that there is no guarantee that this would be the case - as abundant examples, precisely from the UK, seem to indicate.

The debate about cctv cameras in public areas will continue in Portugal, independently of the opinion of prominent couples in England and their obedient newspapers. It is not a debate about cost; it is a debate about moral values and ethics. It is a debate about fundamental principles that many are not ready to sacrifice.

CCTV TOO COSTLY TO SAVE TOTS LIKE MADELEINE MCCANN Empty False hopes

I always cringe whenever there's a story like this or concerning a missing person (particularly one who turns up alive after many years like Jaycee Dugard in America) as you just know that, before you can say Jack Robinson, the McCanns will be out banging the gong and shouting from the rooftops again to remind us that Madeleine is still " a findable little girl" to quote one of Gerry's odd phrases.

Another Madeleine McCann Spreads Fear In The Algarve: Daily Star Spreads Fear, 14 June 2011

Posted: 14th, June 2011

MADELEINE McCann: The Daily Star’s Jonathan Corke says the Algarve is just waiting for another Maddie to happen. And only CCTV can prevent it:

BRITISH children on holiday in Portugal's Algarve are still "wide open" to another Madeleine McCann-style abduction because authorities refuse to install CCTV.

She vanished in 2007. There have been no similar vanishing since. Why the fear now? And why only British kids?

Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry have long believed a camera network in the region may have helped prevent her disappearance or helped in the search.

Indeed. Had cameras been trained on every door and window on the fateful night when the great story began, we may well know more.

Despite a campaign to have a CCTV network covering the Algarve holiday resorts, officials say they cannot justify the cost.
It's just about the money, then?

Now there are fears that without the deterrent another child could be snatched.

Why now?

Former Algarve tourism chief Antonio Pina said: "For many years I have been fighting for CCTV in the Algarve as this would help the situation of increasing the police presence and creating a better feeling of security. Unfortunately, I have found that those in authority have a very small mentality when it comes to introducing this measure. This is a simple answer and it is crazy that it has not already been brought in."

The Daily Star then tells us:
In the UK there are more than 4.2million CCTV cameras capturing each person up to 300 times a day. Portugal's lack of cameras has meant that in the four years since she vanished from Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007, Madeleine has not been caught on film once.
Well, the real Madeleine McCann hasn't been seen on CCTV. At least twice.
The couple's spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: "Kate and Gerry would welcome the idea of greater surveillance in areas like that where families are on holiday."
What if a paedo got a job operating the CCTV cameras trained on the beaches? What then?

The thinking seems to be that Portugal is backward in its attitude to CCTV. With CCTV, children do not go missing – and if they do, they get found. And that's odd, because we're often being told that thousands of children go missing in the UK. People like Shannon Matthews. Indeed, it was Corke who told us:
An estimated 150 children a year are victims of Madeleine McCann-style abductions in Britain.
And we are also told that CCTV doesn't work. It's not cost effective. So. Is it a matter of cash, as the Star says? No. The Portuguese constitution is clear:
Everyone is accorded the rights to personal identity, to the development of personality, to civil capacity, to citizenship, to a good name and reputation, to their image, to speak out, to protect the privacy of their personal and family life, and to legal protection against any form of discrimination.
Such are the facts...

The CCTV in question belonged to the 4 star Estrela da Luz resort hotel and is currently owned by a company called CDBResorts (see link)

http://www.jardimdameiapraia.com/About-Us/Company-Overview/

And as you can see they bought it in 2010 from a Lagos company Oceanico Group with directors Simon Burgess and Gerry Fagan

Anyone know if these men are important?

Just had another google and found that Gerry Fagan is from Drogheda, in County Louth, Ireland (same as Martin Smith) also Simon Fletcher is from Knutsford, Cheshire (pretty close to Brian Kennedy's stamping ground. (Drogheda only has 30, 000 residents)

Given that they are big players in PDL they could well have know BK as are all rich and currently based in Portugal.

http://www.thesargeants.net/dblog/articolo.asp?articolo=374

Interestingly Martin Smith (who owns an apartment at the Estrela da Luz resort hotel) knows Robert Murat from his many previous to the resort.

I might have known this info came from Blackwatch's blog.........funny how he knew so much about this case very early on. While we're all still chewing over the details of this case, Blackwatch has moved on and is now discrediting Joana Morais saying her blog is full of disinformation, even though she is one of the first to tell us what's going on in Portugal.

The items in the link that I don't mention I havent verified as yet but will have a look at later.

If you want me to show the other links (quite a few) I will be happy to when I have time to search my internet history).

I am supposed to be doing a business plan at the moment so time is a little short (hubby will be back soon) sad
