WHY PAY FOR BABYSITTERS WHEN YOU COULD USE THE CASH TO IMPROVE YOUR BACKHAND?
Why pay for babysitters when you could use the cash to improve your backhand?
When the Mcs and the Tapas 7 booked their holiday with MarkWarner at the Ocean Club for April 2007, only certain activities came free. These included sailing and windsurfing, but not tennis. The courts were free to use but any tuition, either group or individual, came at a price.
It isn’t totally clear what the employment status of the MW tennis pros Dan Stuk and Georgina Jackson was – Silvia Batista (Services and Maintenance Director for the OC) states that they were ‘freelance’ and cites this as the reason that they were not on the employees lists; however, both Dan and Georgina say that they had contracts with MW. This would suggest that the tennis pros made all, or at least part, of their income from selling/giving private lessons.
The MW website for April 2007 gives the following tennis lesson charges:
Group (Classic)
4 x 1 hour lessons @ £50/person
Private
1 x 45 mins @ £25/person
Private
3 x 45 mins @ £70/person
Evening Social Tennis Sessions/Weekly Tournament – free
Equipment provided (unclear whether free for casual play)
The following statements were made by Georgina and Dan regarding the Mcs private lessons – recorded word for word identically, both in the English and Portuguese versions.
Georgina Jackson statement 8 May 2007, Inspectora Maria Ratnos/RJQE Murat:
‘On the following days the parents of Madeleine, whom the deponent identified as Gerry and Kate McCann, scheduled 16 tennis classes, together and/or separately, at different times of the morning or afternoon, classes that were conducted by either her or by DAN depending on their booking calendar’.
Daniel Stuk statement 8 May 2007, Inspectora Maria Ratnos/RJQE Murat:
‘On the following days the parents of Madeleine, whom the deponent identified as Gerry and Kate McCann, scheduled 16 tennis classes, together and/or separately, at different times of the morning or afternoon, classes that were conducted by either him or by Georgina depending on their booking calendar’.
Both GM and KM had group lessons in the mornings, which would account for 8 lessons in total. The other 8 lessons were presumably split evenly between the 2 of them.
The minimum they must have paid in total would have been:
2 x £50 (group/classic lessons x 4 each) = 8
2 x £70 (individual x 3 lesson package) = 6
2 x £25 (individual x 1 lesson) = 2
Total owed by the McCanns for 16 lessons = £290
We know that others in the group also paid for the group/classic and private lessons.
In the files, the OC check-in lists show that all the group had ‘a balance/saldo’ to pay for the week, for extras of some description.
McCanns £242
O’Brien £105
Oldfield £21
Payne £117.50
The Oldfields had at least 1 private lesson each so it seems unlikely that any of these monies were owed for tennis lessons. It also seems most likely that tennis lesson payments would have been made direct to the coaches. The website states that:
‘Our coaching programmes are available for players of all levels. They are approved by the Lawn Tennis Association and managed by the specialist tennis company, Service Line’.
The McCanns and O'Briens balances owed are showed as constant figures from the early hours of 1 May (therefore accrued by bed time 30 April and not added to), whereas the Oldfields' and Paynes' balances go up to £31 and £177, repectively, by the 5 May.
We are told that private babysitting costs were in the region of £8/hour. So a 2 hour session, enabling a reasonably leisurely meal at either of the Tapas or Millenium Restaurants would have set the Mcs back just £16/evening. A grand total of £96 for the 6 nights, Sunday to Friday inclusive.
No worrying; no clock watching; no carrying kids to and from the drop-in crèche; no rushing food; no walking backwards and forwards – all for a third of the price of the tennis lessons. These people were there on holiday to relax.
If you could afford to spend £290 on tennis tuition and there were no other safe arrangements made for the responsible care of your 3, we are told very special/much loved, children you would pay out £100 for them to be looked after by babysitters.
Were the McCann children left alone to fend for themselves in an unlocked apartment every/any evening – IMO, it is almost impossible to conceive and it is absolutely impossible to believe.

All that money but all Gerry learned was how to hide a tennis racquet in a blue bag he never had.

Re: WHY PAY FOR BABYSITTERS WHEN YOU COULD USE THE CASH TO IMPROVE YOUR BACKHAND?
Skyrocket thanks you for those details. I am interested that you have the April 2007 figures for the cost of activities.
I have been searching for April 2007 creche and whether there was only half day childcare.
From what I have found, Dec 30th 2007 shows half day but October only refers to 5 childcare clubs.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Are you able to confirm from your records if the full day in May was included or whether there was a charge?

I am currently of the belief there were no extra charges. I found this comment in Trip Advisor of someone with a baby that quotes times but makes no mention of extra charges for the full day. (Reviewed August 2007)

Re: WHY PAY FOR BABYSITTERS WHEN YOU COULD USE THE CASH TO IMPROVE YOUR BACKHAND?
They could not hire a babysitter beacause with a babysitter the "abduction" had not been possible.
Remember what what Rebelo said, "We have evidence that 7 of 8 children were together in the same apartment".
....and one Tapas were sick.

This is a topic that I find very important, but although there were many news reports, I have been unable to find a direct quote, and certainly not from Rebelo.
I cannot find any details in the files, of his trip to 5A shortly after he took over the case and from memory, the news reports were prior to his arrival and 'left on his desk. (I could be wrong on that)
I would love to have a quote, even if from a police source, to indicate there were several children in one apartment (was this the reason the McCanns denied the cot in their bedroom on Wednesday morning?)
Quotes, even though from news reports, and not in the files could be considered useful in understanding.
I have always believed there was no neglect from 2007/8 when I felt alone in that thought whenever I posted.
It would be great if you have that quote and where I could find it. I can only find 'significant evidence' referring to 7 children in the apartment, from a police source but I need the full quote before I can use use the info.

Hope the following helps:
April/May 2007:
Five Types of Kids Clubs
All children under 14 can join one of our five kids clubs, each designed for a different age group. Those for the two youngest age groups (4 to 11 months and 1 to 2 years) cost extra, due to the high ratio of nannies to children. Clubs for older children are included in the price of your holiday. Our children's clubs run 6 days per week from 9am to 5.30pm with a break from 12.30pm till 14.30pm when children rejoin their parents for lunch. No childcare is provided on the resort changeover days.
Our children's clubs are always in great demand and places are limited, we therefore advise you to pre-book in the UK as early as you can.
Baby Club (4 months to 11 months)
The Baby Club costs £260 per week per child. This is in addition to the holiday cost, which is £100 per week for a child under two.
Babies are looked after in our clubs by our childcare team and we aim to maintain a ratio of one team member to every two babies, except on rare occasions where illness or unavoidable absences make this impossible. We also do our best to make sure that your baby has the comfort and security of having the same nanny throughout the holiday.
Toddler Club (1 year to 2 years)
The Toddler Club is split into two groups: Toddler 1 (which is for one year olds) and Toddler 2 (which is for two year olds). The Toddler 1 Club costs £230 per week, in addition to the holiday cost of £100 per week. Toddler 2 Club is free.
We aim to maintain a ratio of one team member to every three children in the Toddler 1 Club and one team member to every four children for children in the Toddler 2 club. Our clubs have lots of room for indoor and outdoor play and plenty of stimulating toys and games. The children also have a quiet time during their day and, needless to say, our childcare staff are careful to keep them well protected from the Mediterranean sun.
Mini Club (3 years to 5 years)
The Mini Club is included in the holiday cost. Mini Club members are based in in-house clubs, which are well equipped with games, toys and arts and crafts. However, they get out and about too, on nature walks, swimming, paddling, games on the beach as well as trips out on the water. Safety is paramount at all times and there's an excellent ratio of staff to children. You can leave your child in the Mini Club for as long or short a time as you like within its opening hours. Mini Clubs are free but there may be the occasional outside excursion - like the very popular ice cream trips - which may cost a little extra.
So, from the above the Mcs had free full day child clubs for all 3 children; the O’Briens had free full day child clubs for both children; the Paynes had to pay for Scarlet; the Oldfields had to pay for Grace.
Also, bear in mind that all 4 families got 1 free child place through an early booking special offer – but baby/toddler 1 clubs still had to be paid for.
I’ve done this quickly (accurately) but if I’ve omitted anything or there is anything else I can help you with let me know and I’ll have another look at it tomorrow.

Re: WHY PAY FOR BABYSITTERS WHEN YOU COULD USE THE CASH TO IMPROVE YOUR BACKHAND?
Thank you so much for this info skyrocket. It is very timely as I spent a few hours this morning on Wayback and Trip Advisor and though it's a few hours 'late' it is HUGELY important to me and confirms the details that I had openly questioned.
I can now correct my info, which to me is very important as I HATE myths and this may have turned into one.
I have to wonder how much saved info you have on the case from the early days? I have to move out of my laptop due to storage of info :)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - you're very welcome.
In answer to your query – I only became interested in the case in 2015 when the Wayback 30 April CEOP entry became an issue. I often use the archive for research and I have a reasonable grasp of the MW content - I can usually access specific info reasonably quickly if you ever want anything else checked.

Ahh Thanks for that. So you are not the same skyrocket that produced much of the phone info that I have used on the 'Calendars'?
Ohh. I see that was Ice Rocket. Must have something to do with the 'age' thing :)

I appreciate the offer and will certainly come to you if looking for anyting that may be archived.
My archives are on the laptop that I need to move out of... There's not much I haven't saved

It goes without saying that if anyone needs any information, especially from the early days...please ask.
