Chinagirl vs. Madeleine Foundation re GONCALO AMARAL: A response to Chinagirl's rebuttal
Our response is in progress. Here is the introduction to it:
The Madeleine Foundation’s reply to false claims by McCann-believer ‘Chinagirl’ about Gonçalo Amaral
On Thursday 10 June 2010, we announced a new Madeleine Foundation campaign. Its object was to raise money for the legal defence fund of Mr Gonçalo Amaral, the senior Portuguese detective who pulled the McCanns in for questioning in September 2007 on suspicion of involvement with the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine. As part of that campaign, we released and are currently distributing a 4-pge A5-size leaflet about Mr Amaral, who has faced and is facing a number of court trials in Portugal. Some of these we believe to be politically motivated.
Details of the contents of our leaflet were first made available on the internet on Wednesday 16 June 2010.
Within 48 hours, an internet poster who uses the username ‘Chinagirl’ had posted a so-called ‘rebuttal’ of our leaflet on various McCann-believer sites. This is our considered response to that so-called ‘rebuttal’.
Introduction
By way of introduction, The Madeleine Foundation, by virtue of its constitution, exists, inter alia, “To pursue - in conjunction with others - the truth about Madeleine McCann’s disappearance on 3 May 2007, and to investigate the facts behind the extent of British government involvement in this case and the reasons for it”. It is therefore the case that we are sceptical about some of the claims made by the McCanns about how Madeleine disappeared. We may be termed, then, “McCann-sceptics”.
By contrast, there are those who believe that the McCanns and their ‘Tapas 9’ friends have told the public, the media and the police nothing but the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about their daughter’s disappearance. Such people may be termed “McCann-believers”.
‘Chinagirl’ is one of the most fervent of McCann-believers. She has made thousands of posts over the past three years on a variety of forums, defending the McCanns to the hilt and attacking with venom those who dare to question in any way the accounts by the McCanns and the ‘Tapas 9’ about events in Praia da Luz in 2007.
‘Chinagirl’s rebuttal has been widely praised as an ‘excellent’ piece of work by McCann-believers on various blogs and forums. This is despite an almost complete absence of references and sources for her claims.
Our leaflet concerned the career of Gonçalo Amaral, the detective who pulled the McCanns in for questioning in 2007. It also covered the various trials he has had to face in Portugal as a direct result of his dogged determination to give us the facts about the investigation into Madeleine McCann’s disappearance. In his book, not yet published in English, titled: ‘The Truth About A Lie’, he directly asserted that Madeleine McCann died in the McCanns’ apartment in Praia da Luz and was not abducted as the McCanns have claimed.
‘Chinagirl’ was publicly outed on a forum as being based in China and working at a Chinese university, to which she subsequently assented. She professes a sincere belief in all that the McCanns and their friends have said about Madeleine’s disappearance and says she has no connection with the case but is merely a disinterested observer of the debate about what really happened to Madeleine.
At the end of this article is our original leaflet, together with ‘Chinagirl’s comments on it. We now turn to ‘Chinagirl’s comments one by one, giving and explaining our response.
