Oh Kate! Empty Oh Kate!

Post by Guest 04.08.15 14:24

A quote from 'madeleine' by Kate McCann, for study purposes only:

Page 4

'My biggest worry has undoubtedly been invading the privacy of our children. My account obviously exposes them to a certain extent, as well as Gerry and myself. Later in their lives they may feel I have made public information they would prefer had been kept private. My instinct tells me, however, that it will be far more important to SEAN AND AMELIE to know that their mum and dad have left no stone unturned in their efforts to find their big sister, and if that included publishing a book, I'm sure they WILL understand and accept the necessity'.

Followed, almost as an afterthought by:

'And I have no doubt that Madeleine WOULD feel the same way'.

End of quote.

Does, or does not Kate think Madeleine will understand and accept?
Or does she think Madeleine would have understood, if she HAD BEEN or WOULD BE around to find out about the exposure of her privacy?

Around as in: alive?

Is there an English speaker in the house who could shed some light on the difference between the WILL understand and accept (= Sean and Amelie) and the WOULD feel the same way (= Madeleine)

We normally use WILL to speak about the future. It is always combined with another verb.
Since WILL is classified as a modal verb (like can, would, could, should) it has the same characteristics:

  1. It does not change in the third person (i.e. he, she, it)
  2. It is always combined with another verb in the base form (i.e. without 'to')
  3. We don't use it with 'Do' in questions or negatives.

Examples of Will:

  • I will go to the cinema tonight.
  • He will play tennis tomorrow.
  • She will be happy with her exam results.
  • They will take the bus to the South next week.

    Would is future conditional

    would for unreal situations

The word would is used for unreal or imagined situations:
'I would love to visit New York.'
'She would like to be professional footballer.'
'We would go, but we are too busy.'

    would as a past tense

would and wouldn't are the past tense of will and won't. Let's look at an example of this using direct and reported speech:
Andrew: 'I will be late.' (direct speech)
'Andrew said that he would be late.'(reported speech)

    would in conditional sentences

Would is used again for unreal or hypothetical situations in the 2nd and 3rd conditionals:
2nd Conditional: 'If I won the lottery, I would travel the world.'
3rd Conditional: 'If I had worked harder, I would have passed the test.'

    would not as 'to refuse'

Wouldn't (would not) is used to show that someone refused to do something:
'I asked him if I could borrow his car, but he wouldn't lend it to me.'

    would for past actions

Would can be used to talk about actions that repeated in the past. It is used in the same context as used to:
'When I was young I would do my homework every evening.'
'In the summer we would always go camping.'

Thank you Hobs!

So, if KH really believes her little daughter is still around/alive/findable/to be found, she will say the child WILL share her siblings emotions;

If however -knowing or suspecting another truth- KH slipped up, she might inadvertently have used the word WOULD, and faulty editing did the rest?

And what of emphatically naming as her children: Sean and Amelie? Another slip-up?

I would say it is "would" as in unreal and imagined situations.

I think Kate did not allow much editing.

Kate McCann might have used a ghost writer,
as 'celebs' tend to do.

Written after extensive interviewing,
recorded,
that's how it works.
The ghostwriter gets fairly well paid.
Signs to never disclose...
And ghostwriters don't,
as they would be finished
in their trade.

Just thinking,
all my opinion

I tend to think it`s KM`s writing - it`s the same disingenuous, pretending to be oh so innocent and holy, yet with leaks of hatred spitting out from time to time.  It`s so transparent, as is she transparent - yet she thinks she is fooling everyone.

It`s the mind of a child pretending to be oh so nice in front of visitors IMO.

I agree, Richard, this is not the product of a professional writer.
