Although Gerry does not strike me as a particularly nice individual, surely this research will be an advance in medical science.
The data from this trial may help young diabetics and I genuinely wish Gerry success on this project as it may help people living with diabetes.

So he is going to be the lead on this even though there will be a Professor on the team. Is that usual?
If the research is successful will there be a GONG at some point? Maybe a standing ovation from his medical colleagues as well?
At least it looks as though he will be too busy for a while to join the middle aged model wee Kelly on the Sofa.
Maybe he will be too busy to give the press an interview/statement once the Portugese verdict is known?

In view of that the previous report which found that the drug in question was of no effect, can now be seen to be 100% effective in all cases,
and should be patented and licensed without delay . . .

A few observations.
As principal investigator of this project, Dr Gerry McCann is effectively its chief financial officer in determining how the awarded money is spent and accounting for this to the NIHR. Members of this forum are acutely aware of his track record on accountability and transparency for spending public money donated to the No Stone Unturned fund.
Whilst it is slightly unusual for a prof and therefore a higher ranking academic to act as a co-investigator it is certainly not unheard of. This happens when a 'friendly' prof is trying to help a more junior researcher with a leg up on the research ladder. It helps oil the wheels in the selection process particularly for more prestigious funders such as the NIHR who will be reassured that a more renowned and eminent research academic is acting in an advisory capacity on the grant.
Prestigious grant awards such as this will help a senior academic with their ambitions to earn the post of chair at a host university and title of professor.
The NIHR would have been the recipient of numerous similar bids from other institutions for this particular research theme. Had GM not been awarded the grant, the research work would have most certainly been carried out at an equivalent institution by an academic of commensurate ability.

Any cardiologist at any major hospital is required to do research and publish. It is more amazing that he has not been mentioned in other projects over the past 8 years.
