THE family of a man interviewed over the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have called on police to close the case.

A man was interviewed over the disappearance of Madeleine McCann
They claim it lacks evidence, is casting a cloud over their lives and is unfair.

Their relative is one of three men living in the Algarve town of Praia da Luz named in the Portuguese press as “arguidos” – a legal term loosely translated as “suspects”.

Scotland Yard detectives felt the trio should be interviewed, as phone records suggested they were in contact when Madeleine was taken on May 3, 2007.

All denied having anything to with the three year old when interviewed three years ago by Portuguese detectives with Scotland Yard officers present.

Two have jobs and the other suffers from mental health problems.

He has told friends the continuing investigation is unjustified and is affecting his health. None can be named for legal reasons.

However, a sibling of one of the men said: “This investigation is just so unfair.

“My brother is 100 per cent innocent. He has spoken with police, like the others, but he cannot talk about it because of judicial secrecy laws in Portugal.


The family claim it lacks evidence
“He is working, has a responsible job and just wants to get on with his life without this cloud hanging over him.”

The man works on the Algarve in the tourism industry and has a wide circle of friends who are standing by him.

One said: “All this nonsense has affected him. He was the centre of the party years ago, before all this, and loved hanging out with his friends, going to parties, cycling around town and just having a good time.

“Now he likes to lead a quiet life and tells friends he wants all this to go away.

“Like everyone in Luz he wants the mystery to be solved.

“This investigation by Scotland Yard has gone on too long. If they can’t get anywhere, they should speak to the Portuguese authorities and let them formally close it down.

“The file would be shelved again and only opened if there is a significant development. That is more fair than having a cloud of suspicion hanging over the Algarve.”

The Home Office has given the Yard’s Operation Grange team £85,000 more, to fund the four-strong team, headed by Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Wall, who are looking into the case.


The Portuguese are in charge of the case and the Yard has to work closely with them to carry out enquiries.

Some newspapers in Portugal have suggested a man Scotland Yard want interviewed further – not one of the three men – had links to the Ocean Club, from where Madeleine went missing.

There was also a report that the Yard wants to speak to a homeless drifter on the Algarve, allegedly involved in petty theft on the day Madeleine disappeared.

As the 10th anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance approaches, Scotland Yard is considering what to do to capitalise on the global interest in the case.

So far officers have ruled out producing an “age progression” picture of what Madeline would look like at 13 and are reluctant to hold a press conference.

But a high-ranking officer may give television and radio interviews.

Madeleine’s parents Kate, 49, and Gerry McCann, 48, a heart expert, are considering giving one television interview, possibly to Piers Morgan or ITV News presenter Mary Nightingale.

How many lives destroyed now? I've lost count of the tally.

The only consolation is that the world is looking on as Scotland Yard continue to self-destruct. .From Portugal to America, from Australia to Sweden they are becoming known for what they really are.

You would think Cressida Dick might sort it out as a sort of penance for past misjudgements. But having read that she was at the FO in a security-related general director role before her recent appointment, I don't hold out much hope.

So SY are "looking for" a drifter who is involved in petty theft - why would a petty thief possibly be involved in the disappearance a little girl but not take any "valuables" from the flat?

Something I can't get my head around-
Let's say for arguments op Grange is a farce. They knew from day one exactly who was responsible for Madeleine's disappearance and deliberately go after non existent abductors. Then surely it follows that
1) at some point the review closes, and
2) when it closes there will be no results. They will have spent 10 years investigating literally every paedophile in Portugal and come up with nothing, thereby making the McCanns look guilty as sin.
It will have had the opposite effect to the one intended. People will inevitably turn inwards on the crime and go back to basics. Nothing has been found with millions spent, so what is the answer? Clearly not a paedophile.
So why do all this? Does the plan only work therefore if a patsy is charged, there being some made up circumstantial evidence, the case goes to court (hypothetically) and then what happens? What's the next step. It's an unanswerable one I know, just pondering aloud.

It's the togetherness that strikes you first.
Sitting side by side - hands clasped - Gerry and Kate McCann are constantly looking at one another, nodding in agreement, chipping in with comments - utterly supportive of each other throughout their ordeal.
Statistics tell you that bereaved parents are more likely than not to separate. The corrosive nature of grief rips apart rather than unites. But they refuse to be bowed by statistics.
As Gerry says:
We're still very much a family; it's just a very important member is not with us at the minute.

I've been interviewing the McCanns about Madeleine for five years now. Every May 3rd a grim anniversary.
One, two, three years missing...What would've been her 5th birthday...And, this time last year, marking the day Madeleine had spent more time away from her parents than with them.

How on earth do Gerry and Kate remain forward looking and positive after five years of not knowing what's happened to their little girl?
In those first panic-stricken days after she vanished, they would have been forgiven for thinking life couldn't get any worse.
And yet it did: accused, suspected, arrested in Portugal.
Even at home you don't have to trawl far to uncover a highly vocal anti-McCann feeling out there: "They shouldn't have left her", "they deserved to lose her", even "they did it".
Why the vitriol about a couple who made a simple - but devastating - mistake? They thought Madeleine was safe - but she wasn't. They failed to spot the risk in a sunny care-free holiday environment.

Their daughter vanished and the acid blame has flowed ever since.
How do they keep so apparently calm and constructive? It's a question that perplexes the public: why don't they weep and beg, and blame? It's a question I get asked almost more than any other about my work: "What are the McCanns really like?"
In Kate's words:
You can't know what it's like to be us, to walk in our shoes. You can't know how you would behave if it was you.

God forbid that any of us should find out.

I like to think I know how I would behave and it wouldn't  be calling police officers effing tossers and threatening to sue people who ask quesitons especially as they asked the gen. public for help.

IMO many who ask questions believe that an answer one day might turn up and maybe lead to the resolution of this case.

An Innocent parent of a missing child will do anything it takes to help to recover that child. That's what you would do, its not rocket science.
And yes, we might not know what it feels like to have a missing child, god forbid, but you would fully co operate with the investigators when its a matter of life or death for your child.
John Walsh the father of murdered child Adam Walsh had the cloud of suspicion on him as well, but he did whatever it took to find his child and worked with law enforcement and not against them. That is what an innocent parent does.
