Detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann believe she could still be found alive, a senior Scotland Yard officer said today.
Detective Chief Superintendent Mick Duthie, the head of the Yard’s homicide squad, said officers were pursuing “justifiable and reasonable” leads in the investigation into the missing three year-old.
He was speaking weeks after the Home Secretary Theresa May granted police £95,000 to extend the five year old inquiry for a further six months.
Mr Duthie, who is in overall charge of the investigation Operation Grange, said: “There is ongoing work. There is always a possibility that we will find Madeleine and we hope that we will find her alive.
“That’s what we want and that’s what the family and the public want and that is why the Home Office continue to fund it. There is work that needs to be done still. “
The police chief admitted detectives did not have a “full understanding” of what happened to Madeleine or why she was taken but added: “That is why the work continues. “
He told the Standard: “There is a missing girl and if she has been murdered and if we think we have got justifiable and reasonable lines of inquiry to pursue then they should be dealt with.”
Madeleine disappeared in May 2007 just days before her fourth birthday while she was on holiday with her parents Kate, 48, and Gerry, 47, in the holiday resort of Praia da Luz in Portugal.
Scotland Yard launched an investigation codenamed Operation Grange in 2011 at the request of the family and the Home Secretary after the Pourtugese authorities closed down their inquiry into the case.
Since then the Met detectives have taken more than 1,338 statements and investigated more than 60 persons of interest in an inquiry which is estimated to have cost £12 million.
Officers have interviewed a number of suspects, including three former workers at the Ocean Club, where the McCanns were staying, and carried out an eight day search of scrubland close to where Madeleine disappeared.
However, in October last year Home Office funded investigation was dramatically scaled back from 29 to just four officers with little sign of any breakthrough.
The McCanns, whose daughter would be turning 13 next month, feared the inquiry would be shut this year and said they would pay for private detectives to search if the police case closes.
Today Mr Duthie raised the possibility that the police inquiry could continue into next year.
He said: “The investigation continues. We go to the Home Office every six months. We have a smaller team dealing with it because we have less inquiries to deal with but we still have a job to do.
“I imagine that if we have not completed our inquiries within six months we will go back to the Home Office and ask for more money.”
He refused to give further details about the inquiry but confirmed that detectives were still examining possible links to a series of burglaries in the Algrarve area at the time Madeleine went missing.
A spokesman for the McCanns said: “Kate and Gerry remain incredibly grateful to the officers working on Operatin Grange and to the Met in general.
They have always said that in the absence of any evidence that would suggest that Madeleine has come to serious harm, it is perfectly logical to believe that their daughter may still be alive. They are encouraged by the continuing work of the Met.”

And Detective Chief Superintendent Mick Duthie, who supervises the investigation, said that it could be extended into next year if police need to continue following up leads.

'That's what we want and that's what the family and the public want and that is why the Home Office continue to fund it.'
Operation Grange, which is estimated to have cost £12million so far, was launched in 2011 after the Portuguese police ended their investigation into Madeleine's whereabouts.
The girl - who would turn 13 next month - was apparently abducted from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz while her parents Kate and Gerry were having dinner at a nearby restaurant.
Last year, the Met investigation was scaled down from 29 officers to just four, following years of fruitless searching.
The Government's £95,000 grant to Operation Grange, announced two weeks ago, was seen by some people as a final stay of execution for the probe.
However, Mr Duthie insisted that the investigation may continue into 2017, saying: 'I imagine that if we have not completed our inquiries within six months we will go back to the Home Office and ask for more money.'

They have investigated 60 people of interest, taken 1,338 statements and collected more than 1,000 exhibits.

It has always been my stance that Operation Grange will not close - even if it's relegated to a broom cupboard somewhere in Belgravia with the occasional bought-in/outsourced experts coming along and plonking an invoice in the system to prove OG is alive and subsequent numerous statistics can be quoted.
OG was opened under the pressure placed upon the government by the Murdoch press. What OG has achieved to date is...fill in the gaps yourself because no-one knows anything other than a bunch of statistics, trips to Portugal, helicopter rides, digging with new cadaver dogs in tow, two different Crime Watch programmes neither of which were screened in Portugal, the head of UK CPS turning up to speak to Portuguese peers etc.
No-one at a senior level, whether it be government or police (our police service is supposed to be uninfluenced by government but in this case the Police were somewhat ordered to do the government's bidding) will make the decision to do anything and it's not clear what they've done so far but always a source close to the McCanns will reveal the parents are grateful by the ever willing UK newspapers compliantly doing a copy and paste job from what on the face of things appear to be press releases.
The government certainly can't pull the rug on OG. The police certainly can't. The media won't either - Madeleine McCann is their golden goose. Add Missing People and Hacked Off to the cauldron and see how the life of a 3 year old matters so very little in the scheme of things.
£95k biannually means it's become a cold case but no-one's going to say it.
Just my opinion of course.

I'd be 'incredibly grateful' too if a team of cops ignored the red flags and incriminating evidence pointing to me and my husband, and steadfastly continued to look elsewhere!

Update on the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann - 28th October 2015
The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) has today, 28 October announced the new structure and changes to the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
The investigation into what happened to Madeleine continues but with a smaller team of officers. Officers investigating her disappearance have completed the huge task of bringing together and investigating the massive amount of information held by colleagues in Portugal, the United Kingdom investigation and the private investigators working on behalf of the McCann family.
While there remain lines of inquiry to follow, the vast majority of the work by Operation Grange has been completed
For an investigation of this size, the extraordinary circumstances of investigating a missing child four years later in another country, the vast wealth of information and theories, it was always going to be an immense task and required a full team of 29 staff working on it.
A team of four officers will continue to work solely on the Grange investigation, funded by the Home Office. The enquiry has not reached a conclusion, there are still focused lines of investigation to be pursued.
The officers will continue to be overseen by Detective Chief Inspector Nicola Wall, the current senior investigating officer, and sit within an existing major investigation team on the Homicide and Major Crime Command. This will give them access to officers within that team should they be required to support further operational activity.
Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley, from the MPS said..
"This work has enabled us to better understand events in Praia da Luz the night Madeleine McCann went missing and ensure every possible measure is being taken to find out what happened to her."
"We still have very definite lines to pursue which is why we are keeping a dedicated team of officers working on the case. We have given this assurance to Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann."
"The Portuguese police remain the lead investigators and our team will continue to support their inquiry."
"Our decision and rationale has been discussed with Mr and Mrs McCann"
Mr and Mrs McCann said:
"We would like to thank all the staff from Operation Grange for the meticulous and painstaking work that they have carried out over the last four and a half years. The scale and difficulty of their task has never been in doubt"
"We are reassured that the investigation to find Madeleine has been significantly progressed and the MPS has a much clearer picture of the events in Praia da Luz leading up to Madeleine's abduction in 2007"
"Given that the review phase of the investigation is essentially completed, we fully understand the reasons why the team is being reduced"
"We would also like to thank the Home Office for continuing to support the investigation"
"Whilst we do not know what happened to Madeleine, we remain hopeful that she may still be found given the ongoing lines of enquiry "
