Learner driver on her second lesson has miracle escape as car overturns

Post by ufercoffy on 14.04.10 9:39

So that's the back-flip mastered, now let's move on to three-point turns: Learner driver on her second lesson has miracle escape as car overturns

One minute she was practising her mirror, signal, manoeuvre drill. The next, she was upside down in a driveway wondering what went wrong.
Fortunately, Krisztina Jaksa and instructor Glen Berley escaped the crash unscathed - which is more than can be said for their black Fiat 500.

[size11]Student Miss Jaksa, 24, was crossing a junction in the village of Headington, near Oxford, when the steering wheel locked.

Back-flip: Learner driver Krisztina Jaksa, second right, looks bewildered after turning the car over
Panicking, she put her foot on the accelerator instead of the brake, sending the car crashing into a gatepost before it flipped over. She said she could not remember much about the accident, but added stoically: 'It has not put me off driving - why would it?'

Witness Russ Dunne, 33, who lives on the quiet street, spoke to the instructor after helping to rescue him and the stricken pupil.
He said: 'I was standing at my door talking to someone from the Labour party who had come around canvassing.
'I heard the engine revving really heavily and then this almighty smack.

Lucky escape: Miss Jaksa was on her second driving lesson when the car turned upside down

Smash: A neighbour said he heard the engine revving and then an 'almighty smack'. Both the learner and the driving instructor escaped unscathed
'I stuck my head out of the door and saw the car on its roof. I was in shock because at first I thought it was joyriders.
'Talking to the instructor, he said she basically kept turning the steering wheel so it must have been almost on full lock.
'Then something happened and she must have planted her foot on the accelerator.'
Mr Dunne helped pull the driver out of the passenger side of the car, while the instructor freed himself.

He said: 'The girl kept saying she couldn't believe it and that it was only her second lesson.
'She was understandably quite shocked.
'The instructor was more like "c'est la vie, accidents happen".
Mr Dunne added: 'The passenger side window was smashed and so was the windscreen, and there were scuff marks on the side of the car.
'We just wanted to get them out of there as quickly as possible - it does pop into your head that something could be leaking.'
Fellow resident Dermot Dobson was alerted to the crash when the driving instructor knocked on his door to tell him the car had hit his gate.
The 58-year-old said: 'The driver came down York Road to turn right into Old Road. She must have been steering hard right and accidentally hit the accelerator and took off.
'No one was hurt but I think the instructor and his pupil were a bit shaken up.'
He added: 'We see a lot of learner drivers around here - there's a network of two or three roads they use - but I've never seen anything like this.
'It's a relatively unusual way to announce your arrival in front of someone's house.'
A police spokesman said officers closed the road briefly and an ambulance crew attended but did not treat anyone.
No arrests were made.

It's funny to read some of the comments from the blokes about "Bloody women drivers". The number of male instructors is considerably higher than female instructors and the chances are that a lot of women drivers are taught by men - as in this case!

Am shocked he placed all the blame on the pupil when he had dual controls and clearly didn't use them.

Bloody male instructors!

Crikey that takes some doing doesn't it?!

I'm saying nothing about BSM......nothing at all.

I can't work out how the heck it happened! The pupil was on her second lesson and approaching a junction to turn right so was clearly driving at a slow speed - why didn't the instructor put his foot on the brake? That's what it's there for!

If I was the pupil I'd be asking BSM if the instructor was a trainee; asking for a new instructor and demanding free lessons if not some other sort of compensation for being blamed for the accident that clearly wasn't her fault.

All instructors are taught that the pupil is only as bad as the instructor lets them be.

Did you learn with BSM then vaguely?

My first lessons, at 17 were with two differnt instructors, both of whom chainsmoked in the car and the lesson consisted of driving between my house, to return the previous learner to their house. I could have driven the route with my eyes closed. They both were men who appeared to have had their souls kicked out of them by life in general and I was just left depressed after each lesson :)

Then I had a series of lessons with BSM - but the instructor was forever cancelling at the last minute, or worse still ringing to ask if they could come an hour early and I finally lost interest in learning and never took my test.

I was bought lessons by my OH after I had my eldest son. My instructor was a lady, strangely enough another chainsmoker, but she was a great teacher and I passed my test first time. I actually don't drive now though, I suppose I spent too many years getting by without it and it's not something I enjoy doing.

It just stunned me that she could actually flip a car over in that situation.....it's quite a skill!

On the day of my driving test many years ago - I turned up with my instructor in our little car and looked in awe at the beautiful array of BSM cars parked outside the test centre.
I was the only one who passed that day!

On another note my FIL who was a successful driving instructor for many years was taking a young woman for a lesson when a drunk-driver hit them head on.
He suffered a broken sternum and had a heart-attack a few days later. The pupil was okay but the car was a write-off.

I had a driving instructor who thought he was God's gift to women and spent most of the time while we were driving along, combing his hair and eyeing up the women!
