No documentaries, no soapbox, no offence meant - just a genuine question.  I frequently see reference to extreme poverty and people being forced to resort to using food banks but I havent personally come across anyone affected specifically by Cameron's austerity measures - I'm wondering if the situation has been blown out of proportion by the media and/or anti-government activists, not exactly unusual.  I'm only interest to know what sector of society has been so drastically affected.

I've no wish to create disharmony - it's no worth pursuing.
It is worth pursuing given your comments and I'd like you to pursue it given that you have no experience of anyone placed in that position.

I believe it's around £73 pounds per week given to people on the dole to survive. How does that work for people to eat a healthy diet whilst paying utility companies huge amounts of money for standing charges to have gas and electricity supplied to their houses?

These people are also expected to pay around £15 per month to the BBC for having a television in their homes.

Just because you don't see it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

This is shocking in the supposed modern world.

I can assure you Verdi that there are people who are absolutely strapped for cash, not just  struggling or hard  up but have very little or even nothing. I am a member of a group where members are helped in the most imaginative  ways, not  only by money, and they then pass a favour on.
The group arose from the £25 fee to be able to vote in August for the Labour Leader.

Thank you Bluebag,

Crikey, how many special relationships are we supposed to have with just about any old person who turns up to Buckingham Palace to have a special dinner (whilst people are starving on our streets)....and....and...of all of them 'Mexico'. You can't make this up.

Well the rich who own and control the "free" system think it's the poor people's own fault for being poor.

The pecking order - it's nature's balance, all part of the evolutionary chain of survival of the fittest.

I've seen abject poverty, where unless a passer-by throws a crust or coin or a more affluent family member can help out, they die on the streets from starvation and/or disease.  Common place where there is no welfare state to assist.  I therefore tend to be over judgemental when I hear people complaining about failure by the system to provide what they consider to be their due, by right!

In my opinion, since the birth of the welfare state, the UK public have been in an extremely fortunate position as regards health, housing, employment and financial assistance.  However this favoured position has never satisfied the entire population - maybe because personal circumstances are too extreme to benefit or their personal circumstance have prevented them from exploiting the system.

As I said recently, there is no bottomless pit, a government can't continue to provide money and costly services without eventually facing a financial crisis.  Still, it appears Jeremy Corbyn has all the answers - let's hope if elected as leader of the socialist party he can resolve problems with the welfare state.

Yes there is.

For the rich.

Seriously Verdi.. there's enough for all to have a decent standard of living if the rich were not hoarding it all.

The problem is, the rich KNOW the plebs are easier to control if they are in debt or dependent.

There is a bigger picture that you are not seeing.

Tony Benn stated the game beautifully here:

I've never voted Labour. I've always voted Tory until the last election when I used my vote as a protest, voted with my conscience and voted UKIP. I also voted Leave. I hasten to add that I wouldn't vote UKIP again.

There is no opposition. The Liberal Party is a nonsense and the Labour Party can't decide whether they're a socialist party or not, having spent much of their time kowtowing to Blair.

Theresa May could make a killing with an early election right now. There's no opposition. Theresa May has a clear field to delay the Brexit vote - which I'm absolutely sure she will do.

How has UK come to this point?  Greed. Greed from the Labour Party who have sold their souls to capitalism in the hope of power. It was greed from the left wingers that stopped me voting Labour. The Trade unions with their closed-shops and militancy went too far and almost brought the country to its knees. Lightning strikes for no reason other than some oik of a shop steward with less sense than a doorknob shouting 'all out' and 'people power' wasn't good, it hit people hard and it lost Labour their voters.

Thatcher came in with juicy promises of home ownership until the mortgage rate went up above 15% and made people homeless. Then there was the poll tax which finished her off - it really was a step too far - the woman became a megalomaniac oligarch.

Thatcher sold off the family silver and privatised just about anything sacred to Britain.

There are now calls from Corbyn (who gives me the creeps) to re-nationalise public utilities which is never going to happen because it's impossible and is being used as a sound-bite. The coffers of the Labour Party have been swollen by empty promises. At first it was £3 to join and then it's £25 in the blink of an eye! that's inflation for you. Still, it's £4.5M the flailing Labour Party wouldn't have had without the fund run.

Tony Benn, to use his socialist identity, was a millionaire.  He spent most part of his life living in the exclusive postcode area of London's Holland Park.
His country seat was/is Stansgate Abbey Farm, Essex..

Nice work if you can get it!

Verdi, I hope you are never in a position whereby you are in receipt of benefits.

It can happen to anyone - even the smug middle class who think they have all bases covered.

It only takes one crummy decision by a bank to reduce a pension fund to zilch.

Do tell me why people in UK of my age (mid to late 50's) who have paid into a state pension have now seen their pensionable date moved by years (in my case 7 years).

It's all well and good to say 'live within your means', 'don't borrow money' etc but there are people of my age who are denied a state pension because it has been weirdly postponed. These people are now considered bed-blockers, arthritic old sods who are bleeding the state. We bought and paid into a pension scheme which in my case has extended its maturity date by 7 years...and even that is open to change depending upon how many borders are open to the UK's benefit scheme open to Europe.

This country has no soul.

I'd sooner give food, money and/or secondhand household goods to someone I know who is in need of help, than blindly hand it over to a charitable organisation, where most contributions are swallowed up by administrative expenses (cough!).

That's actually a very modest house for a politician.

Oh yeah.. it was his office as well.

But hey.. attack the man and ignore what he's saying.

I bet you didn't watch the video.

By the way, this was his house:

Hardly a mansion but in a nice postcode where he lived for many decades.

Hi Verdi, nice picture of that House, who used to live their,I Wonder?
I know you have raised the question on Austerity in the UK and who it affects, effected,Sir Philip still managing to fuel up his small Yacht, I see, whilst fleecing his former workers pensions?
We see programmes made by"Special Fiends"to elucidate how the poorest people in society are constantly living,Can't pay,we'' take it Away,Benefits Britain, etc, but why isn't there the question of who"protracted" these so called TV shows, to target a wide UK Audience of what is happening to the UK Tax payers Money?
Are these shows made to "encourage" people to change their life styles, remember,"White Dee" becoming so popular that Dee, was offered a contract(£250,000) in the USA to epitomise the same situation in both Countries and was about to full fill the Contract, when some kind person from the Home Office had carried out a "Back Ground Check" that has shown, Dee had a "Criminal Record"and could not be granted a visa to enter the USA for the arranged show?  How very dare a so called "Benefits Scrounger" be allowed to earn such money?
What we are witnessing in the UK is a destructive society where there is such inequality in the Education system, where upon the,"Gifted" sports person's are pushed down one channel only(I wanna be a Footballer)Boxer,Rugby Player,Olympic Champion, that is associated to having a short wealthy career path, which was totally opposite to what happened in the 1950's onward's,can you expect Beckham,Rooney,Kane paid the equivalent wage structure in today's society?
The Sports person's from the past, had normal Jobs, but became champions of Sport through hard graft and determination to reach their epitome outside of a working life representing the UK,Olympic's,Mary Peters,Knobby Styles,Charlton Bro's,JP Williams,Etc?
There seems to be so much emphasis to compete in "Sporting Prowess" at the expense of the so called"Dowdy Job's Mentality",I dare anyone to watch the film "Kes" and not shed a Tear, not at the destruction of a Bird of Prey, but the destructive way a Human being is cast aside for not being of a Standard Education and fit for one sole purpose?
The"Power" of Money is thought to be the Root of Evil, but it is the "Pursuance of Money" at all cost that is the Evil, where Humanity is secondary?
PS, there was some fine acting in that film from unknown quantities who became gifted Actors,Actresses and Comedians, who played the Mother of Judd/Billy in the film Kes?

Yes, I agree it could happen to anyone - smug or otherwise.

Do tell me why people in UK of my age (mid to late 50's) who have paid into a state pension have now seen their pensionable date moved by years (in my case 7 years).

You'd have to ask the appropriate government department, I can't answer for their modus operandi but don't expect a satisfactory answer.  As I said recently, I should be surprised if anyone has a clue about how the system works, they only know they have been affected when the pay cheque arrives - or not as in the case of thousands.  I don't believe even the staff working in a government department knows - they just follow the works manual.  There is no flexibility.

It's all well and good to say 'live within your means', 'don't borrow money' etc but there are people of my age who are denied a state pension because it has been weirdly postponed.

I haven't said people should live within their means and not to boarrow money - I said people do live above their means which can lead to a personal financial crisis.  That is a statement of fact.  Anyone below millionaire status, unless extremely fortunate, lives by borrowed money.  A mortgage is a loan, credit card payments are a loan, a bank overdraft is a loan - the temptation is always there to spend money you haven't got.  We live in a consumer culture encouraged by industry to spend spend spend!

Sorry willowthewise but I have to admit, sometimes I find your posts difficult to comprehend sad .  I will read again when I've more time.

In the meantime, just to say I agree wholheartedly about Sir Phillip Green but he doesn't represent the UK government - does he?

Hi Verdi, The Right Honourable Margaret Thatcher whilst serving as the Prime Minister decide in her first role to make the the"State Pension"to become less affluent to the future Pensionable people in the UK, which has become worth a great deal less by successive Governments who decided in their infinite wisdom to extend the length of time, that you can access your pension, now thought to be 69+?

The National Insurance Contributions were increased/decreased accordingly since 1978, where by the average State pension was worth 40 % of the National Average wage, which is now set at 25% of the Average wage, so all you financial whizz kids do your sums to see which class has been effected the most during the present time, back to 1978/79, when Lady Thatcher was running the Country?
Now take a close look at the Elite members Club and see if the "Right Honourable Members" pension Scheme is worth more or less favourable terms, as to today's pension Scheme for the masses, who are not in the "Elite Club",Notice any Difference!!?

Sorry willowthewise but I have to admit, sometimes I find your posts difficult to comprehend sad .  I will read again when I've more time.

In the meantime, just to say I agree wholheartedly about Sir Phillip Green but he doesn't represent the UK government - does he?
Sir Philip Green may not represent the Government, but the Government members chose to give him a Knighthood for what, his fine Business Acumen?
Anyone Remember another fine upstanding person and his rather fragrant Wife, a Former Conservative Chairman embroiled in a scandal in the 1980's, when the accuser met with an untimely Death by the means of a"Hit and Run Accident" RIP Monica, who stood by her evidence in the Court Room of which"Monica" could have sued for Liable Defamation of her Character and would have won based on the defendants Lies in Open Court!!
Sorry if you find my posts hard to comprehend, the main point being in an ever changing world, the masses are used as some sort of canon fodder and they can be used, firstly.
If you are a gifted Personality, you have the "Opportunity" to use your gift to encourage everyone has a hope through hard work and determination.
The Masses then would have to Normally pay to Access the"Gifted" chosen profession through TV Contracts, which then carry their advertisements in between,Win Win situation for the Corporation?
We then see bigger and better Sponsorship deals, Formula one,Premiership Football in a never ending supply for the "Owners" who have their fingers in so many pies, influencing big Government Contracts, who then have an "Heavy Political Agenda"?
The "Sports Events" Dumb Down the amount of time for people to access World wide situations and access independent information on a "Variety of issues" your boring unless your up with the "Sporting Headlines"?
How long do you persist with some sporting activity, if you are not sufficient to reach the top,"Well at least I tried"back to the pub to watch the sports events,Slurp?
The"Elite" all drink from the same cup at the expense of some other unfortunate person's expense, eg if you are a "Failure" we'll then make a feature programme shown world wide,Benefits Street, Can't pay,we'll take it Away, showing to the public, they cannot pay their bills but can afford big TV's,Computers(Exorbitant credit rates by Banks) to become a Talking point with their elite friends of the "Scum of Society" fleecing the tax payer, like something that they may have trod in needing to be wiped away?
How many times have you heard Politicians state,"We're All in this Together"It's all part of a sick society to take away the thought process of being able to think for your self and not become reliant on the "Fear Factor Agenda", that they have created "Wars" but why did they create them, to control the masses, through Oil,Gas,contracts, ability to make Money, equals Power, whilst there busy watching sporting events, there not watching what we'er doing?
