The elderly man had been anaesthetised and the surgeon was cutting into his limb when the knife struck a metal plate that was unexpectedly found in the leg.(snipped from Scotsman article.)
AN INVESTIGATION is under way after a hospital surgeon allegedly used a “rusty hacksaw” to amputate a patient’s leg after attempting to find a suitable instrument at a DIY store.
Just wondering how many similar situations we don't get to hear of.

What on earth is going on in the NHS? So many things going pear shaped resulting in appalling things happening to patients.
I am beginning to wonder if maybe drink and/or drugs is invovled in a lot of it - we recently read about the brilliant paediatric surgeon photographed taking cocaine whilst on-call.
It is time IMO for drink and drug testing on all staff and pronto.

Quite so.@plebgate wrote:This story is incredible .
Ludicrous to the point where one just begins to laugh, for all the reasons you gave, and many more.
I think, more to the point, that Journalists should be breath-tested, and Dope tested - they would find a few !

Spelling tests would be a good beginning.
