Bungling police may have contaminated DNA evidence in the McCanns' hire car - and crashed a van belonging to suspect Robert Murat.
Policia Judiciaria inspectors drove the family's Renault Scenic and Mr Murat's van to the police laboratory in Portimao themselves, instead of sealing them off and transporting them on low-loaders.
They could have destroyed a wealth of potential evidence and contaminated minute DNA traces, experts said yesterday.
They even crashed Mr Murat's green Volkswagen Passat on the way. His lawyer said: "The van was scratched all down one side. The damage is not great but nobody has yet paid for the repairs.
"We don't know how the accident happened."
Former Surrey Police officer Mark Williams-Thomas said: "The fact that an officer was allowed to drive the cars to the lab himself vastly increases the risk of contamination.
"Were Mr Murat or the McCanns ever to be charged, any jury hearing this case would have to consider that risk."

Does this sound to anybody else like a defence being formed? More to the point, is a defence going to be needed?

Hmm, but the evidence was in the tyre well, not the driving seat. Is this really as bad as the press are making out?
But why bring this up now? Is there something in the wind?

I confess this thought had crossed my mind when posting.whatliesbehindthesofa wrote:Does this sound to anybody else like a defence being formed?
It may also be significant that they rush to Mark Williams-Thomas for a quote, the self-proclaimed expert on child sexual abuse and the man who of course notoriously suggested that the abduction of Madeleine McCann may be connected with the supposed abduction of Joana Cipriano.
The pretendy expert obviously considered the Portuguese justice system to have made a grave error in putting Joana's mother and uncle in jail for 16 years apiece for killing Joana, a crime to which they both admitted and in respect of which he gave a detailed, graphic account of how he killed her.
But little details like that don't bother our MWT, the media's favourite McCann expert.
MWT even mentioned Murat!
Why?
He couldn't possibly be guilty of anything.
Could he?

Former Surrey Police officer Mark Williams-Thomas said: "The fact that an officer was allowed to drive the cars to the lab himself vastly increases the risk of contamination.
"Officer Sardine-Muncher, drive this car back to the lab for me."
"Rightio Sir, I'll just pop this corpse I've been lugging round into the wheel well to save making two trips."
