Chapter 11 - Analysing a crime scene. Apartment 5A

- routine meetings between the investigators include the presence and the participation of English colleagues from Leicestershire, as well as José Freitas, a senior official from Scotland Yard, who is a British citizen, a descendant of Portuguese immigrants from Madeira

- this particular meeting is dedicated to analyse the photographic report that was made inside apartment 5A on the evening of the facts

- the first thing that jumps out is the ‘tidiness’ of the bedroom where Madeleine and her twin siblings were supposedly asleep. no signs of an abductor in the access to the bedroom window

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] - windowsill is 91 cms above the floor, a bed is placed against the wall, with signs of someone who slept in it. a wicker chair stands against the far wall. no markings of shoes on the chair, or on the bed
- conclusion: the window was not used for anything, or there were 2 abductors, one on the inside and one on the outside
- bedroom window is protected by a shutter on the outside. on the inside, an opaque curtain that reaches until the top of the windowsill, and two side curtains, that reach until the floor, with embraces. all the curtains are pulled towards the window centre, not covering it entirely

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] - the embrace on the right hand side lies on the floor, between the bed’s feet and the wicker chair, which is pushed against the curtain on the right. the embrace on the left side is hanging from the wall bracket, the left curtain is ruffled, making it look like someone pulled it close in a hurry

- none of the curtain’s embraces is in its normal position, suspended on the wall

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] - Kate says that when M was noticed missing, the curtains were completely closed, i.e. they would have been closed by the parents and the eventual abductor would have positioned them in that manner, in order to facilitate his passage through the window

- the embraces could only have landed in the position in which they were found, when the curtains were pulled shut. other possibility: the curtains were open and were taken out of that position after the disappearance. an abductor would not have wasted time with that; this action is more coincident with an intentional change of a crime scene

- other indicia pointing towards the change of the crime scene would surface

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
- the bed sheets and the position of the soft toy raised suspicions. bed looks like nobody slept there, soft toy is position symmetrically to the pillow, pink blanket is almost folded. father confirmed that the blanket and the soft toy were in that position when he went to check his daughter

- the two cots stand in the middle of the bedroom, making the movements of an adult rather difficult

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
- no bed sheets in the cots, only the mattresses; twins were taken out with sheets and everything, only woke up when they were taken into another apartment

- analysis of photographs of the living room: the sofa beneath one of the side windows is not in position, and the curtains of the window are pulled shut but rolled up and distorted

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] - the father would end up giving an explanation for the sofa’s position. the sofa was normally not pushed against the wall, but he pushed it against the wall because the children used to throw toys into the space behind the sofa while playing

- sofa may have played crucial role in the accident theory. if sofa was not pushed against the wall, M could have tried to access the window and fell between the sofa and the wall

- a digital camera is visible on the living room table, the investigators remark that they need the photos from that camera; they want to know what happened during the dinner, who sat where, what was eaten, what was drunk, who was close, what they were wearing, every detail

- the father dropped to his knees in front of the GNR officers when they arrived, made no sense as he is always under control - possibly to contaminate his trousers?

- in the couple’s bedroom, two beds are pushed together, a wide empty space between them and the wardrobe. one of the beds is made: nobody slept there

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
- empty space was apparently for one of the cots

- possible conclusions: the couple used to sleep in their bedroom with the twins, and M in the other bedroom; the children started sleeping all together in the other bedroom at some point; the spare bed in the children’s bedroom had been slept in; only one person slept in the couple’s bedroom; did the mother stop sleeping with the father and started sleeping with the children?

- not one single medicine was found, only a box of band-aids

Didn't Paulo Rebelo reckon that all but one child slept together in one apartment room? If true, could that explain some aspects, Uffer?

Also, taking that notion one step further, which of the children was the one sleeping alone? One would be inclined to think it must have been Oldfield's child, as wasn't she the one who'd been ill that week? Then more questions follow. If a child of 2 is sick, you would surely stay with her/him. If there was a similar aged girl alone in a room, why would an abductor take Madeleine and not her? Why would all other children be in the one room anyway, since one or more could easily cry and distract the rest.

I do see what you mean though about the crime scene seemingly being very sparsely inhabited.

Unquote

- and those photographs were never produced, yet Diane Webster was left at the table guarding all these things.

Every detail! One may live in hope. - it certainly did not come out in the rogs.

I've just noticed something very interesting when looking at photos of Madeleine's bedroom in 5A.

Here are the PJ's photo's, taken very soon after Madeleine's disappearance.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Note there is no headboard behind the bed that Madeleine was supposed to have slept in.

Now look at a photo of the same room published by the News of the World, a year later:

See the headboard behind the bed that Madeleine was supposed to have slept in?

Go back to the first picture:

See the headboard? It's been moved behind the chest of drawers between the two beds.

Why would this be?
Was it there, behind the chest of drawers, when Madeleine slept there?
Or was it behind the bed, and was moved at some point?

Did the PJ make note of this peculiarity when they took the photos?

Did the people looking for DNA or other clues make note of this peculiarity when they searched the bedroom?

Did the headboard contain some kind of evidence that Kate and Gerry wished to conceal?

It's the bed & chest of drawers that have been moved, not the headboard, which is screwed to the wall. If you look at the photo's of the parents bedroom it's the same there where the bed has been moved.

If that's the case, then why is the headboard behind the bed in the photo that the News of the World published?

I wonder if the picture published a year later, was actually taken from a brochure or some earlier photo, before 3/5/07? I would have thought after the hoo-ha, forensics etc, the same bedcovers and curtains would be a grim relic of a world famous event. I imagine as it had a bit of a weird history after the 3/5/7 the owners would have had to do a bit of an overhaul, as there were tiles lifted, curtains analysed and the walls marked etc.

And the camera photo'd on the table, shame it took a return visit to England and 21 days to produce a picture which was immediately obtainable had the police seized the memory card that night, dontcha think?

Because it's the NOTW! Truth & accuracy don't come into the equation. The photographer probably decided it made a better picture to move the headboard.

It's one of the things in the bewk that I can actually believe (p47)

'.....we pushed the beds further apart, positioning each against a wall, to make room for the cots, which we placed in between them'.

although the question is when, as the bewk says this was the first thing they did on arriving on the Saturday, whereas the maid had one cot in the parents room on the Wednesday morning.

eta.

It's like the inset of 'the window'. The height & width are all wrong, there is no matching curtain pelmet as shown in the photo of the room etc. I think it's a patio door, not a window, but hey, it's only the NOTW so what does it matter.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised that it's not 5a at all, but another similar room, mocked up to look just about like it.

Thanks for that!

Interesting that Kate actually mentions it in the bewk (which I readily admit I haven't read).

I wonder if there was an important reason for her to make this point about the beds being moved around to accommodate the cots...?

eta - I agree, it may not be the same flat at all. Although it does look strikingly similar.

Accept, for a moment, the arrangement of NOTW as correct. Forget about the headboard. Just the two beds in that position. Lets assume the two cots were someplace else indeed, be it the parents bedroom or the lounge -in which cases MO could have observed the twins more easily.

Let's assume Maddie's room contained just two beds.

Maddie is asleep in one of the two beds, let's assume the one near the door.

Wouldn't that have left a perfect setting for someone entering, reanimating or abusing the child on one of the two beds, and leave?

This could explain why the one -used- bed nearest the window was left rumpled;
why blood was found on the wall behind this one bed;
why the twins were checked, but Maddie wasn't;
why the empty cots were put (back?) in the middle of the room as if to obstruct a passage inside that room;
why, only then, the sleeping twins were retrieved from somewhere else and put in the two cots for all and sundry to find there fast asleep

Maybe Maddie was put there in that room, during the holiday, facing whatever befell her: alone
