I think this is having a dig at the McCanns for keeping the Tannerman on their site despite Redwood ruling him out in October. The media are fed up with the crud. IMO.

It looks like a press release from Team McCann to smear the Portuguese police. If the PJ and SY are neck and neck as to who breaks the case, this latest story tells me that the PJ are ahead. They may also be pre-empting the summing up in the libel trial on 7th January, when there is a good chance Goncalo Amaral's lawyer will raise the fact that the McCanns suppressed the Smith family e-fits for 5+ years and thereby caused far more damage to the search than Goncalo's book.

The chances of getting a sensible, truthful conclusion to this case get more remote with every headline.

The public have been bombarded with the most ridiculous theories, each more bizarre than the next.

Yet nobody dares speak out publicly or they face criminal charges and financial ruin.

Starting to wonder whether we do actually live in a freedom of speech country.

My theory is that the Mirror is just finding a way to concentrate themselves on the Smith man without being sued. Although I didn't read the article, I think it is their goal.They are indirectly devaluating Jane Tanner, one of the Tapas.
How to manage it, while Carter Ruck is around the corner?
I wonder if they know what is going on at the yard and at the PJ.

Another theory: Somebody of the Yard said that there will be a possibility that the PJ could arrest people in England and that the Yard could do the same in Portugal.
My theory is that that is a game, to catch the MCanns. It is a way to force them to go to Belgravia and to confess the truth because they probably prefer to be arrested by the Met and than by the PJ, which will take them to Portugal, a different culture, another language, poor prisons, far from their families, different food...
Portugal can not do anything about the fraudulent fund but England will do, when the parents return, after having
payed for their crime in Algarve.
Is my theory ok?

I remain optimistic. What are the chances of TWO police forces, one here in the UK and one in Portugal covering up whatever it is the McCanns have done?

I have been re-reading the rogatory statements today and time has not improved them. I was particularly interested to re-read David Payne's statement and the questioning about the phones and the phone call he made. SY have at least said they are very interested in the phone traffic in and out of PDL.

Time has not done the McCanns any favours. As each day passes this is looking more and more like a farce, the closure of the shop is I think hugely significant.

Scotland Yard have now concluded that the key sighting of a suspect carrying a child at around 9.15pm was, in fact, a sighting of an innocent dad.

This has changed the entire timeline of the incident and has opened up crucial new lines of enquiry.

Questions will be asked as to why the relevance of the information was not recognised earlier.

While there may have been an oversight by Leicestershire Police, there are two things we should remember.

They did not have access to all the material collected during the investigation and full responsibility for the case remained with the Portuguese at that time.

In their liaison role, they may have simply forwarded the questionnaires to Portuguese police without analysing them themselves.

Even if they did consider the content, they may not have realised the relevance without access to all of the material.

The information should have been recognised as of great relevance by the Portuguese police.

I would have expected any person saying they were innocently carrying a child at around the relevant time and place to be investigated and cross-referenced with other witness accounts.

That said, in a high-profile investigation, so much information floods in that it is all too easy for a crucial item to get lost.

At that time, the main focus of the investigation centred on the interpretation of the DNA evidence which had been recently made available.

This may have led to other potential lines of enquiry being overlooked.

No matter what the explanation, the fact that this “new” witness was in the system all along illustrates why case reviews are so important.

A review of all material, by new pairs of eyes and with the benefit of hindsight, almost always identifies something which has been overlooked.

In this case, it appears to have changed the basic understanding of what may have happened on Thursday, May 3, 2007.

I hope you're right Cristobell. I find the questioning of DP over the phones quite interesting too. I wonder if he did hand the 'pay as you go' phone (that arrived whilst Kate was being questioned) over to the Officer that requested it in the interview. I wonder.

Reading between the lines, it's the Leicester police who appear to be getting the criticism. But we'll have to wait and see.

Leicestershire Police yesterday refused to comment on the latest revelations.
A spokeswoman said: “The disappearance of Madeleine McCann is being investigated by the Metropolitan Police and it would be inappropriate for us to comment.”
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “We are not giving a running commentary.”
A spokesman for the McCann’s last night declined to comment saying it is “a matter for Operation Grange.”
