THE massive search for missing schoolgirl April Jones is finally being called off - six months after she disappeared.

The painstaking hunt for the five-year-old, described as “unprecedented” in British criminal history, will stop at the end of next month.

April vanished as she played on her bike with friends near her home in Machynlleth, north Wales, on October 1 last year.

Seventeen specialist search teams have been scouring the surrounding countryside ever since.

Hundreds of officers have conducted finger-tip explorations of hills, rivers and gorges involving helicopters, dogs, and divers.

A Dyfed Powys Police spokeswoman said: “A massive search area of 60 kilometres square has been searched, with over 300 specific search areas.

“The terrain is extremely challenging. The mountains, gorges, streams and waterfalls mean extra care has to be taken and specialist safety equipment has to be worn.

A team of specialist officers will be available from the end of April to respond to any new information received.

Cops previously made a commitment to search for the youngster until "all viable lines of enquiry were complete."

Local man Mark Bridger, 47, has been charged with murder, abduction and disposing of her body.

He is due to stand trial on April 29.

My heart goes out to her family.

Solicitor must have ice water running through his veins when he knows April's parents & family are going through hell, but then that's what he's paid for, may come out in the court case. I feel so sorry for the parents that they haven't been able to give April a Christian burial, but as we know bodies can turn up years later.

I was amazed when I read the search was ending as this was the first time for months April's name had been mentioned in the media, no updates, photo's, nothing, but then maybe the family wanted privacy, not like others that we know.

The search for the missing schoolgirl April Jones has been officially called off, police say.
The five-year-old was last seen playing on her bike on Machynlleth's Bryn-y-Gog estate, where she lived, on the evening of 1 October last year.
Her disappearance sparked an outpouring of support for April's parents, with hundreds of people joining the search for their daughter and offering assistance.
On Monday Dyfed-Powys police announced that the exhaustive search operation had drawn to a close.
Less than a week after she vanished, detectives charged the 47-year-old local man Mark Bridger with child abduction, perverting the course of justice and murder. He is due to stand trial next week at Mold crown court.
Although officers had given up hope of finding the youngster alive, specialist teams continued to search the sprawling countryside close around her home town.
A Dyfed-Powys police spokesman said: "Since the beginning of October specialist officers from Dyfed-Powys police along with other forces from across the UK have been searching the area in and around Machynlleth for five-year-old April Jones.
"The search areas identified during the course of the investigation were completed on Friday 19 April.
"In addition, a reactive team of specialist officers are available to respond to any new information that is received."

Now they ask him the question ?
Or will Carter-Ruck say it is defamatory to suggest or imply he knows what he did with her body ?

The actions of the man accused of
abducting and murdering five-year-old April Jones were sexually motivated, his
trial has heard.

Mark Bridger, 47, from Ceinws, Machynlleth, Powys, denies abducting and
murdering April, and intending to pervert the course of justice.

Prosecutor Elwen Evans QC said he had played a "cruel game" in pretending not
to know what he had done.

April went missing near her home in Machynlleth on 1 October.

Ms Evans said: "He has played a cruel game in pretending not to know what he
has done to her and with her. It is a game to try and save himself."

The court heard Mr Bridger's computer showed he had an interest in child sex
images and had photographs of local children, and had an interest in child
murder cases.

The jury were warned they will have to view some images.

Search terms Mr Bridger used on his computer included "naked young five year
old girls" and "nudism five-year-old".

He had images of the Soham murder victims Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman on
his computer, the court heard.

On the day April was abducted, he viewed a pornographic cartoon apparently
depicting rape.

Mr Bridger, wearing grey trousers, a short-sleeved blue shirt and tie and
flanked by two prison guards, stood and listened as each jury member swore their
oath.

The prosecution's opening speech is expected to continue into Wednesday.

The jury will to go to Machynlleth on Thursday to visit various sites.

April's parents Coral and Paul Jones were seated in the front row of the
public gallery throughout the morning's proceedings, which included legal
argument and jury selection.

Both were wearing pink ribbons, which became the symbol of the search for
their missing daughter following her disappearance.

The trial could last until the middle of June.

I suppose they wanted to find the body or body parts if there was not enough evidence that it had been disposed of at his home. It is too gruesome to elaborate on.

What an utter evil piece of filth Bridger is. I hope they lock him up for the rest of his entire life.

Plenty of time jozi, unfortunately. Watch a butcher dismantling meat. It doesn't take long to deal with a whole lamb. And if the knife handle had been burnt then so could everything else. His cottage was outside of the village I understand, so no-one would necessarily smell any smoke.
I too hope he gets 'life' and that 'life' will mean 'for life'. Poor, poor parents and family, how can they survive this, poor community too, they will be shocked to the core.

Something is so very odd about this case.
He was arrested within 24 hours yet we're now told blood and bone fragments (meaning body was disassembled) found at his home. How did he manage to do all that within so short a time and still disposed of the remains?
IIRC, cadaverine detection dog was deployed and nothing signalled; else couple this (dog) strong circumstantial evidence with the DNA forensics from the blood and bone fragment there must surely be enough to convict him which does not explain why Police expand the search in a bizzare pattern covering a wide and diversed terrain. If there was bone fragment in his home what was police looking for in the search? Besides, there was no report of cadaverine in his vehicle so how did he transport the remains?
