We know name of Madeleine McCann's snatcher: Police get new lead from Crimewatch
Fairly clear headline, don't you think.
POLICE were yesterday handed a potential breakthrough in the hunt for Madeleine McCann after Crimewatch viewers named the new prime suspect.
Ah, so now he is only a suspect, not the snatcher.
More than 1,000 calls, emails and texts flooded in after the dramatic television appeal.
And significantly several people identified the man now suspected of snatching Madeleine by the same name.
Last night Scotland Yard detectives were trying to track him down while also preparing to make appeals in Holland, Germany and Ireland. Their number one suspect was named amid a "truly unprecedented response" to Monday night's Crimewatch on BBC1 which attracted 7.3 million viewers.
If they know who he is, why bother with the appeals in HOlland, Germany and Ireland.
The programme featured two e-fits of a man seen carrying a fair-haired child of Madeleine's age on a street in Praia da Luz, Portugal, at 10pm on the night that the then three-year-old vanished.
Crimewatch editor Joe Mather said yesterday: "They received several names for the key 10pm sighting - the sighting of the man carrying a child towards the beach.
"Several different names but also several callers mentioned the same name for that man. It is always signifi- cant if callers call in with the same name for an individual."
So now there are several names . .

And it gets progressively worse.

In the hard copy of the Express they've got a picture of the McCann's taken during the interview on CW with the e fit pictures to the right of that photo - just so that people can make a comparison.

It can only be the case, can't it, if a name was given?  Will police cast these aside as malicious / nonsense though, because some surely will be.

if someone was on holiday at the same time and saw the same man they cant really cast these aside, mind you after all this time I would think it is highly
unlikely that someone would come forward, unless they have just heard about the smiths sighting as it has been hidden for 6 years by the british press

The CW programme has provided an "anonymous" platform for people to speak out, without fear that McTeam will know it was them who squealed - unlike if they volunteered info to the Met "out of the blue".

I've got Friday marked in my diary, but I'm hoping it'll be earlier.

Given the strength of public feeling about little Madeleine McCann I would hazard a guess that, when apprehended, the prime suspect will be remanded in custody for his own protection.

The road the man carrying a child who the Smiths' saw is built up, there are apartments above shops and he would have walked down other roads/other apartments to get to the point where they sighted him.

It could be that a resident of Luz glanced out of their window, saw the same man, but did not connect him with Madeleine's disappearance because a) the sight of a parent carrying a child is not uncommon in a holiday resort, b) it is uncommon for an abductor to make his getaway on foot, c) it was assumed that Madeleine was taken from the apartment considerably earlier than 10pm.

Now that the timeline has changed and the police are looking for a man who was seen at a specific time, it may be that someone, or several someones, has made the connection and come forward.

I get the feeling that nothing will be cast aside by the police before it has been thoroughly investigated/examined.
