Tony now has a huge range of top legal talent arrayed against him. Below are the details of the four lawyers whose combined efforts, the McCanns hope, will lead to him serving time in prison.

The two top barristers opposing Tony (Adrienne Page Q.C. and Jacob Dean) are both from barristers’ chambers 5 Raymond Buildings (5RB). I noted that Mr Justice Tugendhat was also a barrister at 5 Raymond Buildings before becoming a judge, so presumably he will know Page & Dean pretty well! (see below).

Here they are, in order of seniority:

1. ADRIENNE PAGE

Adrienne Page QC is a leading defamation and media law silk. She has acted for both claimants and defendants in high profile and heavyweight litigation. Between 2003 and 2011 she was joint Head of Chambers at 5RB..

Recent and ongoing cases include:

· acting for Channel 4 and Hardcash Productions in successfully resisting an urgent application by Viagogo, the secondary ticket website, to prevent broadcast of the Dispatches programme on 23 February 2012, both before the Judge and in the Court of Appeal;

· representing the Daily Mail and the Evening Standard in the only jury trial in defamation for three years, brought by Luke Cooper;

· acting for The Sun in respect of the Christopher Jefferies contempt proceedings;

· representing The Sun at first instance and in the Court of Appeal in successfully opposing the grant of a privacy injunction to Christopher Hutcheson (formerly KGM);

· representing Sylvia Henry, a Haringey social worker, in her successful libel action against The Sun after they wrongly targeted her in their 'Justice for Baby P' campaign;

· acting for Simon Singh against the British Chiropractic Association at first instance and on his successful appeal to the Court of Appeal, following which the BCA discontinued their libel claim against him - a case which featured in the BBC series "See you in Court" in 2011;

· acting for the North London Central Mosque in its libel claim against The Policy Exchange - which also featured in the BBC series "See you in Court" in 2011;

· acting for Channel 4 and production company, Studio Lambert, in their defence of the libel action by Matt Fiddes over their documentary about the Jackson family and in successfully upholding Judge alone trial in the Court of Appeal. The case settled upon the Claimant's discontinuance on the eve of trial in June 2010;

· appearing in the Court of Appeal for Tom Bower on an issue of similar fact evidence during his libel action against Richard Desmond;

· acting for the television channel Al Jazeera in a libel action brought by Palestinian politician Mohammed Dahlan which settled shortly before trial in January 2010;

· acting for the BBC in a long-running libel action brought by IVA doctor Mohammed Taranissi which settled in 2009;

· appearing for Frank Warren at first instance and in the Court of Appeal in his libel action against Random House;

· acting for Tesco in its libel claim against The Guardian;

· advising Gerry and Kate McCann in relation to their libel actions against Express newspapers

As well as the more recent cases of Singh and Taranissi, a number of her other cases have also had a medical angle. She acted for Channel 4 when they were sued by Dr Andrew Wakefield, the doctor at the centre of the MMR scare, and for two nursery workers falsely accused of sexual abuse in a 6-month libel trial in 2002 (Lillie & Reed v Newcastle City Council & Ors). She has also been involved in many of the leading cases that, in recent years, have helped to shape the offer of amends procedure.

Testimonials

Named "Defamation Silk of the Year" in the Chambers & Partners Bar Awards 2010.

Recommended as a "Leading Silk" in defamation and privacy in both Chambers & Partners and Legal 500 every year since taking silk.

She has been described, in recent entries, as: a 'canny class act' … is valued for being conscientious and hard-working.

"She's very strategic, bonds well with clients and transmits her arguments to the court beautifully," say observers. Page represented Simon Singh against the British Chiropractic Association at first instance and on his successful appeal(Chambers & Partners, 2010)

Jointly short-listed (with Adam Speker for the Liberty/Justice Human Rights Lawyer of the Year 2003 for Lillie & Reed v Newcastle City Council [2002] EWHC 1600.

2. JACOB DEAN

Jacob is a media and sports law specialist.

In the media field he provides advice and representation to both claimants and defendants in relation to defamation, malicious falsehood, misuse of private information, breach of confidence, data protection, freedom of information and media related harassment. He advises pre-publication, and provides representation throughout the litigation process, from interim injunction proceedings to trial and appeal.

His defendant clients have included national and local newspaper groups and television channels, book and magazine publishers, film, television and theatre production companies, and public authorities including several major police forces.

His claimant clients have included doctors, vets, solicitors, barristers, politicians (local and national), trade union and religious leaders and individuals from the worlds of sport (players, managers and owners), entertainment (film and television actors, musicians and models), finance, advertising and business.

In the field of sports law and professional discipline he represents both sporting and disciplinary bodies and the participants and professionals subject to the jurisdiction of such bodies. He has provided advice and representation in relation to disciplinary and licensing matters, internal appeals and challenges to the decisions of professional bodies in Court.

· achieving large damages award for leading Arabic newspaper and journalists

· appearing as sole counsel for the Defendant in a four day jury trial in the Liverpool District Registry, obtaining an indemnity costs order for the Defendant;

· acting for Trafigura Limited in a libel claim against the BBC, resulting in an apology broadcast as the lead item on Newsnight, damages and costs;

· resisting an application for injunctive relief brought against Channel Four by a disgruntled contributor to a documentary film;

· appearing (as junior) for Ken Bates in a 10 day libel trial arising out of the takeover of Leeds United FC; and

· advising and appearing on behalf of the British Horseracing Authority in a number of matters arising out of allegations of betting corruption and other breaches of the Rules of Racing.

[ A NOTE ABOUT Sir Michael George Tugendhat, a.k.a Mr Justice Tugendhat, from WIKIPEDIA ]

Sir Michael George Tugendhat (born 21 October 1944[1]), styled The Hon. Mr Justice Tugendhat, and in legal writing as Tugendhat J, is a High Court judge in England and Wales. He is the UK's senior media judge, taking over that role from Justice Eady on 1 October 2010.[2] His appointment was welcomed by some journalists who believed he held "more enlightened beliefs"[2] than did his predecessor.

Michael Tugendhat is the son of Dr Georg Tugendhat, an immigrant from Austria who founded a petrochemical refinery, and his wife Marie Littledale.[3][4] His elder brother Christopher Tugendhat is a politician, businessman, and author.[5] He is married and has four sons.[6]

Tugendhat attended the Roman Catholic Ampleforth College and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he studied philosophy and classics.[7][6] He won the Henry Fellowship to attend Yale Law School and studied at the Hague Academy of International Law before being called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1969.[6]

He then joined Five Raymond Buildings, a set of barristers' chambers specialising in media and entertainment law.[8][9] Tugendhat was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1986. He became a Recorder of the Crown Court in 1994 and a deputy judge sitting in the High Court of Justice in 1995.[8] In 2000, he became a judge sitting in the appeal courts of Jersey and Guernsey.[8] He was appointed a High Court Judge, Queen's Bench division, in 2003.[1]

In 2010 he was appointed to be the Judge in Charge of the Queen's Bench jury lists.[10] He is a fellow of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.[1] He was formerly on the management committee of the Advice on Individual Rights in Europe Centre.[9][11]

Described by The Guardian as "Britain's leading expert on privacy law", Tugendhat told the Commons' select committee on Culture, Media and Sport:[12]

"We must never underestimate the asset we have in the free press and I am afraid a free press is bound to be one that occasionally gets it wrong either by malice or mistake.

3. ADAM TUDOR, CARTER-RUCK

Adam graduated from Balliol College, Oxford, with a First in Jurisprudence. He completed his training at Herbert Smith, where he qualified in 1997, combining his general commercial litigation practice with specialisms in sports law and defamation.

Adam joined Carter-Ruck in 2001 and became a Partner in 2003.

He specialises in media litigation and reputation management, and is also spearheading the firm's commercial litigation practice. His clients range from multi-national corporations and leading business people, to a number of national governments and heads of state, as well as other high-profile politicians and celebrities.

Adam's City background means that he has extensive experience of large-scale commercial dispute resolution, including complex contractual and shareholder litigation. Adam has conducted appeals for corporate clients in the House of Lords (now the Supreme Court) and Privy Council.

In libel circles, Adam is best known for representing Kate and Gerry McCann in their libel and privacy complaints. In 2008, he secured unprecedented front page apologies from the Daily Express, Daily Star and their sister Sunday titles, as well as £550,000 in damages for libel. Adam also obtained apologies and £375,000 in libel damages from the Express group for the seven friends who were dining with the McCanns on the night Madeleine was abducted. All the damages in these cases were applied to the search for Madeleine. During 2011 Adam has been advising Mr and Mrs McCann in relation to their evidence before the Leveson Inquiry.

During 2006/7 Adam secured over £700,000 in damages as well as numerous apologies (both in print and on television) for a number of individuals falsely accused of involvement in terrorism. One client received damages of over £225,000.

Adam's first major libel victory was in 2001, when, at his previous firm, he represented (now Sir) Alan Sugar in his successful libel action against the Daily Mail, which resulted in a jury awarding damages of £100,000, the highest jury award that year.

Adam has regularly lectured to the profession and made a number of television and radio appearances, including on Radio 4's "Unreliable Evidence". He has also been named "Lawyer of the Week" in The Times newspaper.

Adam was invited to give evidence at the House of Commons before the Culture, Media and Sport Committee in its inquiry into press standards, privacy and libel.

· Adam combines his specialist media/ reputation management work with helping spearhead Carter-Ruck's expanding commercial litigation practice.

· Libel highlights include representing Kate and Gerry McCann in their unprecedented libel complaints against Express Newspapers.

· Broad experience of complex commercial disputes, including in House of Lords.

· Described in Chambers Guide to the Legal Profession as "Sensible and diligent; tough but fair". "Commended for his assiduousness".

4. ISABEL MARTORELL, CARTER-RUCK

Isabel read law at Jesus College, Cambridge, and having trained at Carter-Ruck she qualified with the firm in 2003 and became a partner in 2011. Isabel is a Solicitor-Advocate, having obtained Higher Rights of Audience in 2007.

Isabel specialises in defamation and has acted for high profile individuals (including a number of leading Members of Parliament), corporations and charities. Together with Senior Partner Cameron Doley, Isabel has a substantial Middle Eastern practice, having advised governments from the region on a number of non-media disputes, and has also represented government officials and royal family members in libel actions.

During 2006 and 2007 Isabel represented a number of individuals falsely accused of involvement in terrorist plots, including the alleged "liquid bombs" plot to blow up a number of passenger aircraft, securing published and broadcast apologies and damages totalling over £700,000.

In 2008 Isabel assisted Partner Adam Tudor in representing Kate and Gerry McCann in bringing libel complaints following a sustained media campaign of false allegations concerning the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine. Mr and Mrs McCann obtained unprecedented front page apologies from the Daily Express, Daily Star and their sister Sunday titles, in addition to £550,000 in damages for libel (all of which were paid to the fund set up to find Madeleine).

The legal directory Chambers and Partners lists Isabel as an "Associate to Watch" in the field of Defamation and Reputation Management, and has described her as "industrious and talented" and a "rising star" with a "concise and efficient approach."

Isabel also undertakes privacy, data protection and commercial litigation cases, including breach of contract and professional negligence matters.

One thing's for certain. This case is not about a missing child. It is all about hiding what happened to that child before she was made to 'disappear'.

It'll hit the papers like the metaphorical ton of bricks if they successfully defeat Tony. What it will fail to do is mention any caveats like "Suppose it's established that the Claimants had lied about what happened?" if any such things are mentioned as they don't contribute to the media picture required. Selective reporting and all that.

Quite an impressive team hey! Who would have thought a pair of no bodies who admitted to leaving their children alone while they went out and wine and dine would have the clout or money to arm themselves to the teeth just to take on an old-age pensioner?

What are they terrified of?

What sort of people would go to these lengths to silence someone?

Rapists?
Bank robbers?
murderers?
Paedophiles?
NHS doctors who have done everything in their power to hinder the search for their own daughter and refuse to write a letter to the Portuguese Prosecutor to reopen the case?

One positive, the media, lawyers etc DO read this forum and others, they ARE aware that there are thousands of readers who are not registered members, but who are following the case.

They KNOW there are tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands who can see through this farce. Should the Lawyers behind the Mc's go too far with persecuting people who have seen through the nonsense, these hundreds of thousands will get ever more vocal. It will end up being something the media will not be able to avoid forever.

This new pedophile investigation into the practices of politicians from the 80's (for starters) will flush out many of those who backed the McCanns. It's just a matter of time. It will all come out eventually.

Did this £550,000 ever show up in the find Madeleine fund. I can't recall.

If only fifty or a hundred people could turn up at the court with white t-shirts with VEXATIOUS LITIGATION emblazoned across the front, maybe The truth of the lie on the back. They should be completely silent, no shouting or arguing or talking to ANY press. Just the stand outside, then inside with these t-shirts and complete silence.......

I have already made absolutely clear to anyone coming to the court on 5 & 6 Frebruary that I want none of that.

The attempted committal of a person to prison for allegedly treating the Court with contempt is a various solemn and serious business. If anyone is coming in any way to 'support' me at court, would they please dress smartly, and behave correctly in court. The court would in no way be impressed - very much to the contrary - by the kind of antics you suggest.

They were photographed and the photo handed to a press agency, who released it on 8 May, as the search for Madeleine continued. The McCanns held up these same pyjamas at two press conferences on 5 & 7June 2007. How could Madeleine have been abducted?"

Amelie McCann (aged 2): "Maddie's jammies!".

david_uk, your 'enthusiasm' doesn't go un-noticed. It is also just not appropriate, that any suggestion of support for Tony should have been proposed, in the least, without consultation with Tony first. Some things are quite transparent and evident.

If I'd be a judge [which I'm not ...] I would want "order" in the courtroom.
If I'd be a judge, I'd frown at the unequal battle in front of me.
If I'd be a judge, I would carefully listen to all legal arguments being brought and I'd would to have to apply the Law on it.
If I'd be a judge, however, I'd weight the "contempt of court" issue at hand against "justice" in its general form, especially since additionally one of the alleged breaches is a documented incitement.
If I'd be a judge, I'd be obliged to give sentence, but it would be a suspended one.
If I'd be a judge, I would forthwith order the libel case to go ahead.
And, if 'd be a judge in this case, I would know, that a libel case in Portugal has been brought to a [temporary] halt, seeking out-of-court settlement ...

The four top London libel lawyers now lined up to crush a pensioner from Harlow Empty Re: The four top London libel lawyers now lined up to crush a pensioner from Harlow

Post by tasprin 30.01.13 13:42

I’ve just read this thread and had to register to wish Tony Bennett good luck for next week. I’m absolutely staggered that the McCanns are going to such lengths to silence those who question their story. The McCanns didn’t cooperate with the police, the mother refused to answer questions and their friends refused to return for a reconstruction. That really is beneath contempt when you consider their young child’s life was at stake but, ironically, they still have the audacity to bleat on and on about leaving no stone unturned and continue to pocket bucketfuls of cash in the process. Under the circumstances how can the McCanns be the slightest bit surprised that so many people doubt the abduction scenario (and it's impossible to forget the cadaver dogs alerted on everything connected to the family and they surely didn’t get it wrong, so many times just in this particular case).

Free speech is lost in this country. Before Leveson there was much criticism about the chilling effect of UK libel laws and there was hope that things would change but the Leveson Inquiry has turned out to be yet another awful blow to free speech. How anyone can be forced into giving up their right to an opinion in a free society and sued for stating facts such as repeating the police questions that Mrs McCann refused to answer is beyond me, especially since those questions can still be found on mainstream media sites such as the BBC. The only question Mrs McCann did answer was when she herself acknowledged that she was hindering the search for her own child by refusing to answer the police questions. She subsequently had the gall to accuse the investigating officer of harming the search because he simply wrote a detailed account of the investigation, although she and her husband waited an entire year before they did anything about that. If anyone other than McCanns had behaved in this way they would, at the very least, be given the cold shoulder by the media, politicians and charities alike, but instead these people are feted by all and sundry. Astonishing as it seems, Mrs McCann was even appointed as an ambassador for Missing People, a charity that works closely with the police, despite the fact that she wouldn‘t cooperate with the police herself. Apparently retired Operation Grange detective, Simon Foy, recently joined the Missing Abroad charity but it turns out that the McCanns (long ago) had Maddie’s profile removed from that charity’s website on the basis that they did not need it’s help - quite extraordinary given the McCanns seek publicity where ever they can get it. They welcome the attention generated not only by Missing People, but also PACT, a charity founded on the problem of parental abduction (Perhaps that is because they have a close personal tapas connection to a member of the PACT Board and I don’t mean Clarence Mitchell).

When you look at the legal might the McCanns have utilised against one man, this court case cannot be deemed in any way fair and just. It’s just a classic bully v victim scenario. Time and time again the truth is buried by libel lawyers i.e. Savile, who preyed on vulnerable & troubled kids including the sick, disabled and dying, remained free to carry on abusing kids his entire life, protected by the establishment (however much they deny it) and knighted by both Queen and Pope; Cyril Smith, another one who spent a lifetime abusing children, and upon his death was given a glowing eulogy by Nick Clegg who, by then, must have been well aware of Smith’s proclivities; Armstrong, who hoodwinked the world into believing he was a sporting hero but he was really just a drugged-up cheat and fraudster; Trafigura, a company that dumped toxic waste, injuring an already poverty stricken and disadvantaged community and in efforts to suppress the truth the company's libel lawyers even sought to control what comes out in parliament. The list goes on and on, but it is clear to see how wealthy, influential individuals and corporations use libel lawyers to duck and dive. David Cameron states that no one is above the law and those who have broken it will be dealt with equally, regardless of their position in society. That is not true and he knows it. For instance, how far will the establishment (which includes libel lawyers) go to protect high profile paedophiles? And have bankers faced the long arm of the law for destroying the world’s economy, leaving hundereds of thousands jobless, homeless and in some cases dead? Of course not, it is the rest of the population who must pay for their sins. Prison is for plebs - the rich get protection and a top-notch libel lawyer. The truth is, no matter what they say to contrary, we are not all in this together. Those in power are now completely estranged from the general population and out of touch with public opinion (eg remember Ed Milliband's recent comment, in his opinion the McCanns are “heroes“).

Whatever anyone says Mr Bennett, it takes real courage to face up to this mob, The vast majority of us would fall at the first hurdle. I wish you the very best of luck.

Sorry for the long post.

ps Will the judge address the issue of entrapment by Mike Gunnill?

Châtelaine wrote:If I'd be a judge [which I'm not ...] I would want "order" in the courtroom.

If I'd be a judge, I would, like the defendant before me,

feel my inteligence and integrity intimidated and insulted,

the 'inequality of arms' would place me as a judge as an

unwanted confederate of this inequality. But, on the other

hand, I may ignore this array of 'big hitters' and provide

an opportunity for the defendant to receive the whole fruit

of the law and not just the core. This would be MY court,

not some kangaroo affair or a one-sided sea saw game!

If only, If I was a judge.

A little clue....

Harriet Harman MP lobbied the government and signed documents to legalise Child pornography, paedophilia and incest whilst Legal Officer at the National Council for Civil Liberties (later Liberty)
Jack Straw MP made it illegal for any Child to complain about abuse while in the care system in 2009
Margaret Hodge MP described victims of child abuse as “mentally unstable and extremely disturbed”
Patricia Hewitt ex MP has argued that fathers are not a good influence on Children. Member of the Gay Liberation Front in the 70s when it was affiliated to P.I.E. and P.A.L.
Ed Balls MP tried to introduce compulsory sex education for all School children from the age of 5 including simulating masturbation with sex toys.
Clare Short MP stood up to oppose a bill in the Houses of Parliament that would have protected children against child abuse and stopped PIE

Carter Ruck are the British lawyers for Tom Cruise's chilling 'Church of Scientology'
This is just a flavour and the list goes on & on and goes back to previous governments, especially the Tory government of the 80s & 90s

Then consider this....
Michael Shrimpton QC on Radio Bristol just 2 weeks ago on January 11th 2013 said this

"In my report to the joint of intelligence committee [Government cabinet], in the case of Madeleine McCann, She was going to be abused by a senior member of the European commission in Brussels whose name is known to British Intelligence, I can't identify him in Spyhunter but I know who it is, there is no way that Madeleine could ever be returned alive to her family because the danger would be even at her tender age of 4 she would recognise him and know who was abusing her. So the Germans had to murder her and indeed they eventually did sadly in December 2008"

Whatever you think of him, Michael Shrimpton QC is someone who has negotiated the national security aspects of the Pinochet case with the late Lt-General Vernon Walters, represented and advised intelligence officers and is believed to have close connections to a number of Western intelligence services, and old tory guard. He has represented US and Israeli intelligence officers in law and has briefed staffers on the Senate select Committee on Intelligence and the Joint Congressional inquiry into 9-11, also addressing panels on terrorism in Washington DC and Los Angeles. This is the person telling the nation that Maddie has been abused then killed in 2008 and they have known about this for 4 years. Also telling us that the government know all about this. Even going to publish a book for the public to purchase (Spyhunter) saying this. He has also said this a few years ago too......What have the mccanns done? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, YES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING

Yet to a man who has only ever purported a theory based from the official Police investigation files that is freely available in the public domain for anyone in the world to read, the mccanns throw the full mighty legal weight onto him, using underhand, unprofessional and disgusting tactics persecuting him down even further trying to absolutely crush him. A man standing on his own who has the rights of free speech that the United Kingdom allows its citizens. gerry mccann stated at the Leveson Inquiry he has no problem with anyone purporting theories based on the police files

Tony bases his theory on the official police investigation within his rights of freedom of speech but is absolutely persecuted with the almighty powers of the UK's establishment, yet Michael Shrimpton QC who actually works in the high elite circles telling us Maddie is dead without a shred of evidence to back this up is just left alone!!!

The sort of people who would go to these lengths to silence someone could not have it any more clearer, its a huge flashing neon sign telling you and with every day and with every action they do or do not do is just proving it more and more

there are many doubters of the McCann story who have heard MS and call him a nutjob, if twitter is anything to go by... and who believe he is muddying the waters.

If I'd be a fellow-judge, I would admire greatly your astute, common sense approach, and your ability to assess and reign in litigious, fat cat bullies such as Team McCann, who continue to use vast fortunes, largely accrued via an ill-informed public, to gag and threaten with ruination Tony Bennett, Goncalo Amaral, Pat Brown, et al, who courageously attempt to expose the mountain of misinformation surrounding this epic and grotesque facade.

I hope Mr Justice Tugendhat is as shrewd as you are, Châtelaine. The four top London libel lawyers now lined up to crush a pensioner from Harlow 160807
