TV3 Ireland and the withheld funds.

Post by Willo on 18.12.12 20:10

A few months ago I saw someone asking on the forum if TV3 in Ireland had ever released the money they collected for the McCanns after the station intimated that it would be withheld. I thought I would ask them via email. It took a few weeks but I finally got an answer.

Why is nothing easy when the McCanns are involved?

Here is the dialogue.

Dear TV3,

I was wondering if you could answer a question for me. In Dec , 2007 you withheld monies (nearly 25,000 euros) that TV3 raised from an appeal for the McCann family after the disappearance of their daughter Madeleine. I was wondering if this money was ever released to the McCanns or whether it is still held in trust. Thank you for your time,

Your email has reached TV3 in Ireland, we presume that your email was meant for TV3 in New Zealand.

Dear Info@tv3,

It has been six weeks since you promised to look into and answer my question (as soon as possible?). I pose it for the third time.

Q : In Dec , 2007 you withheld monies (nearly 25,000 euros) that TV3 raised from an appeal for the McCann family after the disappearance of their Daughter Madeleine. I was wondering if this money was ever released to the McCanns or whether it is still held in trust?

Hope you have the time and information to answer.

Thanks in advance,

Seven days later (18/12) I received the answer from the complaints? department.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your email.

The funds collected by TV3 from this appeal were released to the fund in an appropriate manner.

Kind regards,
TV3 Complaints

So the money was released but I wonder what the appropriate manner was?

Good sleuthing, Willo. winkwink

Bit rich to assume you didn't address the email properly. Probably didn't want to answer?

The appropriate manner would be cash in an envelope with 'Kate and Gerry , Rothley' written on it?

Bravo Willo. It would also be very interesting to know the date these funds were released but it's not advisable to hold our breath for that info.

Can but ask. Just sent this.

Dear TV3,

Thank you for your reply.

Would it be possible for you to give me a date when the funds were released? Was it a TV3 decision or was it a legal requirement?

Also the ' released to the fund in an appropriate manner' statement piqued my curiosity. Would it be too much to ask what that statement meant?

I share your earlier views (assuming the withheld monies were due to an uneasiness with the McCann fund) that the fund is not what it seems to be and it would be interesting to see if your donation of the funds your station collected has been recorded by the McCanns.

Thanks again for your time,

Regards,

Does anyone know if the Republic of Ireland has the equivalent of companies house, like we do here in the U.K, I'm assuming they must have.
Anyone who can help me with this; thanks in advance.

This appears to be the one for the Irish Republic.

There must be an audit trail. Receipt from the Fund and so on.

One would think a remittance advice note/bacs payment record exists somewhere. That payment has to have a payee name on it. Interesting.

It seems they were not happy with the fund not being a charity according to this article, and dont forget it was only a couple months after it came out that they had used the fund for their mortgage
