A Point of View: Why rules aren't pick-and-mix
An interesting read. It is in fact strange that in this day and age, we still have 1st and 2nd class. People crammed into 2nd class, no seats standing in the aisles, whilst 1st class has many seats available. Should all trains, planes etc. all be the same, all same priced seats, and why should the rich get preferential treatment?

You get the farcical situation where sometimes advance tickets for 1st Class are cheaper than 2nd Class tickets.
Mind you, I have, on more than one occasion on an over- full train ('full & standing' or F & S in railway speak) been told to go and sit in the first class, without incurring a penalty.
