I think that depends on the person.
A close friend and colleague was in the control room when a Southern force rang to ask us to check out a registration number of a car they had found by the cliffs, and a body at the base. They gave him the number.
It was that of his long term partner. He confirmed all the details, including that of his relationship, and then simply asked the Inspector if he might be excused for a short time.
His name is David Cranmer and his story was written up in the Sunday Times Magazine many years ago.
He was allowed compassionate leave and the shift turned up in uniform for the funeral.
This was in the 80s, so people who say the Service is homophobic are simply wrong.

On a personal note, when I was burgled I went into icy professional mode, not touching anything, not entering rooms except to ensure the perp. was not still there, and certainly not doing the whole "I feel violated" bit.
I suppose people are different.

Raging and "roaring like a bull", hurling yourself on the floor like a praying Arab, kicking and breaking furniture, smashing your forearms on railings and so on, is, IMHO
acting.
It is done for effect.
It is a parody of a stereotype of what they think people should do under those circumstances.
Just as when people feign mental illness they do all sorts of stupid things which are NEVER seen in people who are genuinely ill.

Healy and McCann have so far lasted five and a half years without showing one shred of true emotion in relation to Madeleine and what happened to her. I am sure, if confronted, they would claim they are different behind closed doors, or back stage as Clarrie likes to call it. Not true, imo. If you look into their eyes (to borrow a phrase) from the very first public statement, there is no emotion in the eyes of either parent. That has not changed over the years.

PeterMac, I assumed that the police officer's partner was female so it took a moment or two for the penny to drop - I was thinking, what's homophobia got to do with it? It is a bit early in the day for me!

I often think that when Kate waxes lyrical about the joys of motherhood and family life, she's been reading too many Mills and Boon novels or Hello magazines. She describes a saccharine-laden image which just doesn't match up to reality. Mind you, I dread to think what sort of literature she reads if she thinks that the infamous page 129 remark and the one about "loving and pleasing her, enjoying her delight" are normal things for a mother to say!

So yes I agree that the throwing themselves to the floor etc was just an act.

Yes Peter, it would depend on the person. I'm sure you served with officers who would be able to carry on regardless and do what they are supposed to do while others would just crumble (usually the ones who go for accelerated promotion to escape the realities of policing as fast as possible).

Same for me when I was burgled in my old flat 9 years ago. I phoned up to report the burglary and then left everything as I found it until the local police turned up, followed by the SOCO. The SOCO found some prints and the burglar was nicked the next day whilst signing on as part of existing bail conditions. When they searched him they found a ring and watch which he had stolen from me!

It is certainly over the top to react in such a way, but then some out there do have that theatrical temprement.[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

I had a very close shave once when an irate 'friend' tried to force me off the road in Russell Square. I had to mount the pavement, narrowly avoiding a pedestrian. The 'friend' had pulled open the driver's door and was about to attack me.
I was ice cold, super efficient - apologised to the pedestrian, told him police was not needed, told the friend to b.... off or I would get the police, got off the pavement, went home.
About 4 p.m. the following day I was a blancmange, shakes, dizzy, you name it.

PeterMac: isn't it the case that out of every 100 people in an emergency situation:
25% will know exactly what needs to be done there and then and they take immediate action
50% are waiting to be told what to do and will do so when told
25% are either incapable of movement, will be frozen to the spot and/or go into all out panic mode, getting in the way of rescue.

The McCanns don't fit into any of the above categories.

"JH: And what sort of activities does Madeleine like doing?

Does she get in and muck around with all the other children, that sort of thing?

KM: She likes running, she played tennis, as well, didn't she?"

I can't figure what's worse, not having a straight and more complete answer to the question or the "she played tennis didn't she?"At least I made my mind about the tennis picture [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

You forgot to underline the "didn't she". (bold and underlining done by me)

Why was the "didn't she" added at the end of the sentence by KM, it was not needed, only perhaps to emphasise the fact that she was photographed holding tennis balls on a dodgy photo.

That makes it sound as if Madeleine was someone else's child and Kate needed confirmation that she played tennis, rather than definitely knowing that she did.
