Maddie McCann parents’ £1m bid over ‘lies’
Published: 4 hrs ago
THE parents of Madeleine McCann are hoping to win a £1million libel payout this month from a former cop who claims they lied about their daughter’s disappearance.
Goncalo Amaral, 55, was the police boss who led the initial search for Maddie after her abduction in May 2007 in Praia da Luz, Portugal.
He went on to write a book sold worldwide in which he claimed her parents covered up her death from an accident or overdose of sedatives.
Kate and Gerry, both 44, from Rothley, Leics, said the slurs left them “totally destroyed”.
Their lawyer, Isabel Duarte, told The Sun: “We reasonably expect compensation for the dreadful damages this book has brought the family.”
The case is due to start in Lisbon on the 13th.
Any damages will go towards the hunt for Maddie, say the McCanns.

It is interesting she has also given details about the claims against them and mentioned the book, without making any comment on how much money Amaral is supposed to have made from it.
Is this a sign of the tide beginning to turn?

Lazerelli is normally incapable of referring to Dr Amaral without her normal Tourette's "Disgraced Ex-Cop".
Interesting that she spells out the possibilities, without saying they are "ludicrous".
And "reasonably expect" rather than "Demand".

In the Daily Star, short and sweet, ...................
MADDIE PARENTS’ LIBEL BID
Spokesman Clarence Mitchell
MADELEINE McCann’s parents hope to win a £1million libel payout this month from the ex-police chief who claimed they lied about their daughter’s disappearance.
Any damages awarded to Kate and Gerry McCann will be spent on the global search for the youngster.
A court hearing is due to start on September 13 in Lisbon. The McCanns’ are still considering whether to appear to face
Goncalo Amaral, 55, who wrote in his book The Truth Of The Lie that Madeleine was dead.
The McCanns’ lawyer Isabel Duarte said Kate and Gerry, both 44, of Rothley, Leics, were confident of victory.
And their spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “If they win the case every penny they receive in damages will go into the Madeleine Fund.”

I don't agree with the comment that they were just yards away and not down the street. Down the street is exactly where they were. If they had been dining on the balcony of one of the other Tapas crew then that comment would be valid.

Only certain facts in the case get mentioned by the British press
1. OCTOBER 2010: McCanns defeated when the Portuguese Appeal Court upheld Dr Amaral's appeal against the banning of his book: The Court ordered his book to go back on sale, McCanns ORDERED TO PAY COSTS, Court said the banning was a BREACH OF DR AMARAL'S GUARANTEED RIGHT OF FREE SPEECH under the EUROPEAN CONVENTION ON HUMAN RIGHTS.
2. MARCH 2011: Portuguese Supreme Court heard the McCanns' appeal against the Appeal Court's ruling, AGAIN the McCanns LOST and the McCanns were AGAIN ordered to pay Amaral's costs.
My betting?
None of them will even mention these inconvenient FACTS

Re: Maddie McCann parents’ £1m bid over ‘lies’
With what exists in the public domain, in documents produced by both Leicestershire and Portugese police, I would have thought any action brought by the McCanns could be shot down in flames in a heartbeat. I'm surprised any lawyers representing the Mc's would even consider their proposed actions as anywhere near win-able.
I cannot see how this isn't going to be game, set and match for Amaral. Merely reading out of a list of the Mc's lies re the fund, events in PdeL, refusal to co-operate, and so much more, should logically result in the case being thrown out of court and a hefty legs bill for the fund.

Hi Tony, I don't think they will be mentioned, they weren't at the time, so unlikely now.
Not sure how another court can award them damages, when two courts have said they have not been libelled and the book is back on sale.
SY have not come up with anything whatsoever to support their case. Also not sure how they can claim the book has had an adverse affect on the search for Madeleine. She remains the most high profile missing child in the world, not sure how they can prove no-one is searching as a result of GA's book.
As far as their lives being devastated is concerned, Gerry returned to full time work, Kate has recently been made Ambassador for Missing people and they assure us that the twins are thriving.
Returning to your original point Tony, I would have thought they should have abandoned their claim for damages following their losses in the Appeal Court and the Supreme Court. They may have had a strong case while the book was banned, but that is no longer the case. If I were Isabel, I would very worried that their wrath may turn against their legal advisors.

Time and tide wait for no man
You could argue that the tide began to turn at that Appeal Court hearing in October 2010. SY have said that part of their team is reviewing from the possibility she is dead, so it still doesn`t conclude anything as yet.

How much? Just a mere 13% like the rest of the fund! Money towards the hunt?...pull the other one mccanns. None of it will go to the search, just like kate mccann never searched herself and never moved from their apartment but was busy deleting compromising calls from their mobiles instead! The McCanns are the only people that NEVER looked for Madeleine! All they have done is employed a couple of dodgy retired cops, very dodgy agencies (some in prison for fraud). One Agency immediately made a big song and dance of informing the world that they knew Madeleine was being held in Morocco and they were going to get her. When the Managing Director was asked how was it that a Detective Agency of their standing could make such a ridiculous assertion making it known ‘they knew Madeleine was held in Morocco and they were going to get her’. He tried to wriggle out of it but in the end he said ‘DON’T ASK ME. THAT’S THE PARENTS STRATEGY’.Any damages will go towards the hunt for Maddie, say the McCanns.
"slurs" “totally destroyed”...what utter and total crap. The "slurs" are facts...read the PJ files of their "own words', if anyone has made "slurs" it is the mccanns and their tapas friends themselves with their total inconsistent and contradictory words....their very own words are the foundations and cause of the "slurs"Kate and Gerry, both 44, from Rothley, Leics, said the slurs left them “totally destroyed”
And "totally destroyed"?
Who is really destroyed? The couple who have been elevated to celebrity status, the couple who enjoy VIP status wherever they go, the couple who are treated in the UK as royalty where nobody is allowed to dare say a word against them, the couple who have the powers of the UK giving them the most unprecedented support ever seen from every angle possible from a 'story' where there has never been one shred of evidence ...Or the man who has lost his family, lost his pension, had his assets frozen, a man in his retirement forced to live with his parents as he has had everything that he worked his whole life for taken away for purporting a theory based on 'Facts'...yes 'facts'! 'facts' that gerry mccann himself states he does not have a problem people purporting a theory with
There is only one single reason for this sickening libel action the mccanns are taking...To stop the truth of their scam being exposed

You would hope so but remember the silence that greeted the overturning of the book ban after a good few British media outlets including the BBC had sent reporters to Lisbon to cover the initial case. Silence also greeted the McCanns' loss at the Supreme court.

Hi Woofer, thank you, I hadn't seen that statement. That small window of opportunity certainly is a conundrum. If an abductor had been watching the family and the apartment for several days, why choose the moment when the father is standing outside of the apartment talking to a male friend? If we are to believe JT, he then walked past all 3 of them with a stolen child precariously balanced on his outstretched arms. One would have thought, he would have made some effort to conceal the child or at the very least, waited a few moments until the coast was clear before crossing that open, well lit road in front of them.

Well exactly, especially when you factor in the McCann-promoted "sightings" that have been coming thick and fast recently courtesy of the Olive Press. How can they square that with their claim Amaral's book has hindered their so called search? It just doesn't wash but then again, nothing about the couple washes (except perhaps cuddle cat).

Exactly, which is why a good lawyer will make a nonsense out of it. Plus it can be proven just how many lies TM have spouted who any uncorrupted judge would deem as unreliable witnesses.
