I wonder what Pa Hubbard was up to when Ma was giving testimony for the McCanns in Lisbon? Ministering to hisfrocksflocks in Canada?
I also wonder why Ma Hubbard was chosen to take the stand when it would surely have been more impressive if her hubby, a man of the cloth who gives every appearance of being equally devoted to K&G's cause, had testified for them?
He also slipped up in his interview in ' his' church : 'they've got two' - 'three lovely children'.
Perhaps he wasn't sure of getting his lines right, not that anyone else did

Brother Lee Love...?
That evening the local Catholic priest, Father José Manuel Pacheco, who had returned to Luz, came across to our apartment to introduce himself and offer his support. My first impression was of a very cheery chap. Nothing wrong with that, but at the time his smiling face seemed out of place in the grief -laden atmosphere of our apartment.

Padre Zé, whose jolly demeanour had seemed so at odds with our distress the previous evening, was in his element here. He was certainly a character, full of life and passion. Recollections of Kenny Everett in the guise of his singing pastor, Brother Lee Love, would often spring to mind in the coming weeks.

How interesting that Paul Luckman of the 'Portugal News' is also an assistant Anglican priest.

Read somewhere recently that there was a big falling out in the Anglican church in the Algarve a few years back, and two rival factions were formed. Apparently Luckman was prominent in one of the factions.
Be interesting to find out more about this and the 'politics' involved.

article from 'Beyond the Chapel' (Tidings Spring 2009)
http://nickaroundtheworld.wordpress.com/printonline-work/tidings09/
Mission work doesn’t always entail
working with disadvantaged groups as Rev.
Haynes Hubbard (BA ’89) discovered.
The English-born, Nova Scotia-raised
priest serves the diocese of Europe in Algarve,
Portugal, which he calls a “transient”
congregation, made up of thousands of English
speaking ex-patriots who are trying to
make a life—as business people or retirees—
along the Portuguese coast.
The church provides a sense of community
for people away from their homes, says
Hubbard.
“People need a priest wherever they go,”
he says.
In May 2007, three days before he arrived
with his wife Susan Hubbard (BA
’90, BJ ’91) and their children in Portugal, a
four-year-old British girl, Madeline McCann,
disappeared from a resort in Praia de Luz, a
story still in the news and tabloids around
the world.
The Hubbards offered their support to
the young girl’s parents, Kate and Gerry Mc-
Cann, and view the incident as the reason
they were brought to the country at that
time.

Madeleine's Birthday at Praia da Luz...
John Hill had arranged for us all – Gerry, Sean, Amelie and myself , Trish and Sandy, and Fiona, David, Dianne, Jane, Russell, Matt and Rachael and their kids – to spend the day at a private villa. (Nicky left that weekend , and Michael had popped home for a couple of days.) We didn’t know what to do, really. We couldn’t let the occasion go unmarked and we wanted to celebrate
Madeleine on her birthday whether she was with us or not, but nothing we did felt right. It was good to be away from the Ocean Club and the media circus, and the kids enjoyed themselves, playing in and around the pool with floats and toys. But Madeleine’s absence hung heavily over everyone else.
The Mark Warner staff had brought over stacks of food for us. The men organized a barbecue and there was wine and beer. We ate mostly in silence, concentrating on the kids. I couldn’t eat much, and alcohol was completely off my agenda. Fiona recalls that Gerry and I were completely shut down that day, barely able to talk, and although our friends tried to remain cheerful and behave normally to get us through it, they all felt awkward about being at this lovely villa, in the sunshine, in these circumstances.
There was no cake. Gerry did attempt a toast but he was visibly upset and couldn’t manage much more than ‘I can’t even say happy birthday to my daughter …’ before choking up. The physical loss was more intense than ever. I ached for Madeleine.

Meanwhile, in Brazil...
Our Lady of Aparecida
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
Our Lady of Aparecida (Portuguese: Nossa Senhora Aparecida or Nossa Senhora da Conceição Aparecida [ˈnɔsɐ siˈɲɔɾɐ dɐ kõsejˈsɐ̃w ɐpɐɾeˈsidɐ]) is a celebrated 18th-century clay statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the traditional form associated with the Immaculate Conception. The image is widely venerated by Brazilian Catholics, who consider her as the principal patroness of Brazil.[1] Historical accounts state that the statue was originally found by three fishermen who miraculously caught many fish after invoking the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The statue is currently housed in the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida in Aparecida, São Paulo, Brazil.
Colonial documents and papal bulls have referred to the image as Nossa Senhora da Conçeicão Aparecida. The Roman Rite feast day of Our Lady of Aparecida is on 12 October, which since 1980 is also a public holiday in Brazil. The building in which it is venerated was granted the title of minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1980, and is the largest Marian shrine in the world,[3] being able to hold up to 45,000 worshippers.[4]
Controversy about the statue was ignited in May 1978 by an intruder who stole the clay statue, which was smashed as he was apprehended, from its shrine, and again in 1995, when a Protestant minister insulted and vandalized a copy of the statue on Brazilian national television.
The following papal documents concern the statue:
Golden roses in Brazil...
Yellow roses in Praia da Luz...
Gerry rocked out of church carrying a bouquet of yellow roses.
Kate had a gerbera. The meaning of yellow gerberas in the language of flowers...?

- Pope Saint Pius X granted a canonical coronation to the image on 8 December 1904

- Pope Paul VI granted its first golden rose on 12 August 1967
- Pope John Paul II made the shrine a minor basilica on 4 July 1980[5]
- Pope Benedict XVI granted its second golden rose on 12 May 2007.

Floriographic interpretations of Gerry McCann's bouquet :
Friendship and "I care" are the foremost meanings of a yellow rose. Unrestrained and uninhibited as the breeze, free from attachments, the yellow rose definitely says that the sender is keen on friendship alone.
Unbridled joy is another meaning of a yellow rose. Therefore, yellow roses are often congratulatory in tone. Yellow roses are given to celebrate new beginnings. These delicate flowers proudly laud an accomplishment, a consummation or a fulfillment. You simply cannot do without yellow roses when you send flowers to express joy and pride in another's achievement.
The color yellow was interpreted as a "pale" color during the early Victorian period. They had shades of negative meanings ranging from lukewarm affection to jealousy. They indicated a frame of mind that was on the one hand lacking in fervor, while on the other mutinous and envious in tone. But, the yellow rose has overcome these negative intonations and now mean "warm and sunny" affection, joy and pleasure.
Another truly wonderful meaning of a yellow rose is that it indicates a determination to start anew, to begin afresh. A rift, a misunderstanding, or a quarrel that needs to be mended - these are all set right by yellow roses. "Let's put it all behind us and start a fresh page", the yellow rose humbly tries to persuade. Yellow roses are conciliatory and appeasing in their symbolism.

Lagos, PORTUGAL: Gerry (R-Back) and Kate (C) McCann, the parents of the missing three-year-old girl Madeleine McCann leave Our Lady of Light church after a vigil for Madeleine in Praia da Luz, southern Portugal, 11 May 2007. The parents of Maddie, who disappeared last week in southern Portugal, said Friday they were satisfied by the police that was doing all it could to find their daughter as authorities wound down their search of the local countryside.

This must've been the evening mass mentioned by Kate in her diary :
The happy-smiles-and-yellow-flowers service seems to have been held in broad daylight. Different clothes, they look fresh.
I note there was a wedding at the church that day :
Not far away from the spontaneous ceremony, Anglican priest Haynes Hubbart held a prayer for the-now three year old girl in the same church where her parents are expected to attend a Catholic mass on Saturday afternoon. "Many of us know that this day is Madeleine's birthday, Madeleine Mc Cann's birthday, so we send this prayer as a song to Madeleine's family that we might with them uphold them before God," father Hubbart told people attending a mid-day wedding.
