From A-list to D-list

Post by tigger on 19.04.12 20:42

Just as a reminder that five years ago the McCanns had full access to A-list celebrities, heads of state and invited to address MPs, IBA conference and so on.

It is a stark contrast with the present, when Popes are hard to come by, celebrity writers refuse to be associated with TM products and invitations to lecture on child care and press persecution are fading from the agenda.
May 2007:
We kick off with the visit to the Pope - a visit that had the effect of instilling a firm belief in the religious fervour of the McCanns.
July 2007:
22 July 2007
Gerry spends the whole day travelling from the Algarve to Washington, USA with their Campaign Manager. They take a Virgin plane with the tickets donated by Richard Branson.
23 July 2007
Gerry, and Justine McGuinness, spend most of the day at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). They meet US Attorney General Gonzales at the Justice Department.
Gerry finishes the day off with an interview for America's Most Wanted programme, which boasts 12 million viewers.
24 July 2007
Gerry starts interviews at 6.15am for the five major US TV networks.
Late morning Gerry, and Justine McGuinness, visit the White House where they meet with the First Lady's deputy chief of staff Sarah Armstrong.
This was a disappointment, after the Pope, he had expected or hoped to meet with Laura bush herself, but got her side-kick.
After lunch they move on to Capitol Hill for meetings with politicians.
25 July 2007
Gerry manages an early morning run around Washington.
After a round of meetings during the day and a visit to the British Embassy, Gerry takes an evening flight from Washington as he heads back to Portugal.

2012
Highly unlikely that either the Pope or a random Cardinal would be pleased to meet the pair. The US may not be too keen to renew the acquaintance either, interviews are possible - but by now must have limited appeal.

Where's Beckham now?

Post by tigger on 20.04.12 8:15

Friday 11 May 2007

Gerry's 14 hours of questioning, finishing at 3.00am this morning, goes largely unreported in the British media as it coincides with David Beckham's video appeal.

Gerry McCann speaks at the International Bar Association (IBA) Annual Conference in Madrid, 06 October 2009

- so one of the first things that we did was we got a message to David Beckham, asking him to do an appeal. He was playing for Real Madrid in this very city at the time and he agreed to that and did a very emotional appeal. And that had an amazing effect on the overall campaign because he was such a worldwide superstar and it seemed to have a snowball effect.

Note that the approaches were made by TM - not the other way round.

The England rugby team wore Look for Madeleine T-shirts at their open training session in the Algarve today. I am looking forward to seeing the pictures tomorrow! We had a brief, private meeting with the RFU management team last night to thank them for this unprompted show of support ...

So where did they get the shirts? In the right sizes? Because they're big boys, those rugby players. XXXL...

Stolen in the night People

By Bill Hewitt
May 28, 2007 - Vol. 67, No. 21

Author J.K. Rowling, American Idol's Simon Cowell and Virgin Atlantic founder Richard Branson had all chipped in with substantial contributions, with the result that at press time the fund topped $5 million. unquote
(I think that that wasn’t actual cash in the Fund, but mostly reward money - this must have hurt TM no end and Philomena’s celebrated tirade about ‘some greedy person’ who would get this money is enlightening - all that money and no way to get hold of it! )

16 Jul 07 Gerry's blog.
The campaign to find Madeleine received a a massive boost today from JK Rowling. The author of the massive selling Harry Potter books has asked all retailers to display a specially designed poster of Madeleine when the sixth and final book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows goes on sale on Saturday 21st July. Ms Rowling, who lived in Portugal for several years, has offered amazing support in the search for Madeleine. As well as offering a large reward for Madeleines safe return she has also added information on Madeleines abduction on her own site with a link back to our homepage. Try and find the information at www.jkrowling.com, I will give you a clue that it is under links! A huge thank you to JK Rowling and her publishers Bloomsbury for their support.

2011:
Full statement from JK Rowling PR:

To clarify recent reports regarding JK Rowling's involvement in Kate McCann's forthcoming book, Madeleine. While JK Rowling has been a long-term family supporter, her only part in bringing the book to publication has been in supporting the fact that her literary agent was also representing Kate. Beyond this, she has not been involved in any aspect of the writing, editing or publication of the book.

McCann abduction hotline idea The Press Association

Wednesday 09 April 2008

The parents of missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann are in the process of setting up a dedicated information hotline that will be available across Europe for when police suspect a child has been abducted.

Kate and Gerry McCann and their team are believed to have already reserved the hotline number - 116 000. It has yet to go live.

The couple are visiting Brussels as part of a campaign to bring in a dedicated alert system for abducted children.

The McCanns are to make a power-point presentation to MEPs at the European Parliament in Brussels, providing them with details about how the system works and the case for introducing it in Europe.

They will then launch their declaration, calling for the introduction of such a system, to the world's media at a specially arranged press conference in the Belgian capital.
unquote.

This is an outrageous attempt to claim this initiative for themselves. The proposal for this scheme was accepted in february 2007 and proposed in 2006

Why does the Press Association not check information before it is broadcast?

Police Federation standing ovation

Post by tigger on 20.04.12 11:16

Madeleine's father hails UK police Friday, 13 Jul 2007 10:14

The father of missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann has praised the "sterling work" of police officers and detectives in the UK.

Speaking at the National Police Federation annual bravery awards last night, Gerry McCann said the role of police forces was "often not appreciated until you really need their help".

He will also visit the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre later today to discuss their role in aiding Portuguese police find Madeleine.
At last night's award ceremony, attended by Prince Charles, Mr McCann received a standing ovation from police officers, which he described as a "humbling" experience.

They did everything possible to make themselves well known or rich, but absolutely nothing to do with the search for Maddie.
They have never even once approached the PJ to volunteer to help with the investigation, zilch, nothing.

I am sure in a genuine missing child case, the parents primary concern would be to approach the police and bug the police until the Police react.
But not the mccanns, they promote a campaign to rub shoulders with people they otherwise wouldn't have the chance to meet.

The higher they climb the harder will be their fall, so they shouldn't get too complacent.

Gerry McCann, speaking on June 3rd, 2007: "Later this year (...)"
LET'S HOLD A MADELEINE DAY FOR THE WHOLE WORLD

Sunday June 3,2007
By Jason Groves
Daily Express

ROCK legend Sir Elton John is being lined up to front a global pop concert, to carry the message of missing Madeleine McCann’s plight to every corner of the earth.
It is hoped the singer will headline a huge series of worldwide events to mark a special Madeleine Day that her distraught parents are planning in the effort to find the vanished four-year-old. Sir Elton’s popular appeal is guaranteed to attract a swarm of other film and music superstars keen to offer support to parents Gerry and Kate McCann.
The couple, having promised not to return home until they are reunited with Madeleine, are now planning a series of visits to European and North African cities, to distribute posters and widen the appeal for information.
Sir Elton has played an emotional DVD of Madeline at his concerts, but now believes a larger effort would do more to raise awareness of her predicament.
Gerry McCann, 38, said: “One of the ideas is maybe getting all the people who have publicly supported us to come together. I don’t just mean from the UK but from different parts of the world. We want a big event to raise awareness that she is still missing.
“We would look at high-profile people who have already pledged support. It will be some sort of focus around an anniversary, to tell people thatMadeleine ’s still missing. I think it would be later this year, once media attention has dropped, to bring it back up, hopefully, for a short period.
“It wouldn’t be a one-year anniversary, it will be sooner than that. What we’re doing at the minute has its role but doing that down the line in a few months won’t have anything like the same impact. We might have a sporting event, something arts, something music.
"We’ve had backing from sporting people up to now. We have had backing from certain musical celebrities as well. We’ve got some other musical contacts that we are exploring, who are happy to offer support.
“We’re not saying it would necessarily be one big concert, it might be that on a certain day they are playing her DVD.
“What we want at the current time is maximum message out there now, about her disappearance but then just events to bring it back up occasionally just to remind people, if she’s not found.”
Snipped.
A month after the sleeping Madeleine was snatched from her bed, Gerry and Kate McCann have betrayed the first signs that their hopes of finding her alive are starting to fade.

Gerry added: “Of course we believe Madeleine is still alive but you would be incredible if you hadn’t considered the worst scenario, that she’s dead.
“Kate and I discuss it – not a lot, but we talk about hope, and that while there’s some we will not give up. At the minute, there’s loads of hope.”

PS - Don't look for this story, on the Daily Express site. It was deleted, long ago...

He might just as easily said a five year anniversary as he knows whatever the year number she will not have been found. However one day someone may have the human decency to tell the truth.

Kate's diary:
SATURDAY, JUNE 2: I can't remember today (which is now yesterday!). The morning was spent doing paperwork. I wrote a letter to JK Rowling, asking for her help in keeping M in the public eye. She has a new Harry Potter book which will come out in July. I asked if it would be possible to do something like a bookmark with M on.

J.K. Rowling consented to having a poster of Madeleine in every bookshop where her latest Harry Potter was being sold. No more. JKR imo had the measure of them pretty early. I think it only applied to the UK.
I also think she'd already donated 100.000 pounds.

But they've still got the backing of NI, The Sun and that woman from the Mirror, The Liverpool Echo, The Leicester Mercury and if push comes to shove, The Telegraph too, not to mention Cameron, Miliband, Leveson, Jay, the lady from PACT, Jim Gamble, Clarence Mitchell, Freud et al as well as on the face of it, Andy Redwood of the Yard. The only people still fighting Madeleine's corner and at great personal risk are GA and TB, all the others may have quietly withdrawn, but none has had the guts to take any action.

Don't know if this publicity drive makes my skin crawl or blood boil, a lot of both if I am honest. They missed an opportunity for a money-spinner though, a celebrity masterchef special to be judged by Greg Wallace, John Torode and Michel Roux Jr, task to create a very special madeleine cake, the winning recipe to be mass- produced and sold at all worldwide events. They could have also sold a special madeleine pan, with the shell shaped moulds in green and yellow.

A year or so ago, I doubt Rebekah Brooks and/or Andy Coulson would have thought they'll be in the position they are in today.

I have every believe that sooner or later, the McCanns will get their comeuppance.

'A Madeleine day for the whole world' - whoever thought of that and my betting is GM, is a suitable case for treatment.
Superiority complex isn't in it.
As somebody said, makes you think of Bob Geldof - how would that help Madeleine?
What with DVD's of her being played at Elton Johns' concerts - that DID happen. If she'd been alive at that point, it would definitely be the end.

NOW,
Suing for bucks.

THEN,
Prison cell sucks.
