David Smith article (split topic)

Post by tigger on 07.04.12 9:27

Sideways I came upon David Smith from the Times Online:

The exchange re the McCanns and the baby monitor and the Smiths is in: http://unterdenteppichgekehrt.blogspot.co.uk/2011/07/conversation-with-press.html

Here is a snippet from that exchange I find very interesting:
D. Smith:
No i am not upset. I just don't to fuel the web ghouls (i have no idea whether you are one of them or not...) who seem obsessed
with what i consider to be the grotesque idea that the mccanns or their friends did away with madeleine. In addition to the
further distress it must cause the mccanns and their friends on top of the devastating event that started it, I just feel it is a
complete waste of time and energy. That said, however, I had a long briefing with Gerry McCann before I wrote my article and
I guess the baby monitor info came from him. I am aware that many discrepancies arose in the portuguese statements through
misunderstandings of language. And you ought to be aware that there will always be minor discrepancies of fact in statements
- failings of memory, interpretation and so on - which are not in themselves sinister or suspicious.
unquote

The question asked D Smith was:
The couple never mentioned to the PJ that they brought a monitor as well, in all their statements they claim that the Paynes were
the only ones with a baby monitor. Only in April 2008, in the rogatory interviews conducted by Leicestershire Police, this piece
of information appeared. It might seem a small omission, but in the light of possible neglect charges, would have been important.
Jane Tanner claims in the rogatory interview that she brought it with her in the evenings and positioned it on a ledge/wall behind
her. This was NEVER mentioned to portuguese Police as the released statements show. The question I have is, how did you
get this info before the rogatory interviews even took place? I know you have to protect sources, but this seems a very strange
inside knowledge.

unquote.

The whole article is well worth reading and very significant in view of the favourable publicity the McCanns have had from this source.

David Smith is definitely on my blacklist..

He also wrote this in a long article............

Gerry had knocked up at the start of the 4.30pm tennis-drills session, but had decided not to exacerbate an injury to his Achilles tendon, so had dropped out and waited around by the courts until the children came back from the kids’ clubs at 5pm for tea. That had been one of the most enjoyable times of the holiday, all the children together for tea, then the adults playing with them afterwards.

http://www.mccannfiles.com/id96.html

From GM's witness statement 10th May 2007...............

They bathed the children, the deponent having left at 18H00 for a tennis game only for men, which was attended by: DAN, the tennis instructor; JULIAN, with whom he had played tennis several times; and CURTIS, with whom he had also played before.

During the afternoon of that day, the rest of the group, including the children, were at the beach, having returned at 18H30, the time at which he saw DAVID PAYNE next to the tennis court. DAVID went to visit KATE and the children and returned close to 19H00, trying to convince the deponent to continue to play tennis, which he refused, as he had already been plying for about an hour and had to go back to his wife. Nevertheless, RUSSEL, DAVID and MATHEW stayed to play.

At around 19H00, he made his way to the apartment, finding KATE and the children playing on the sofa

From the same article he also wrote this.......

Beyond the Smears - by David James Smith
Timesonline

The PJ had never attempted to obtain a “control sample” of Madeleine’s DNA. That had been left to the McCanns, who had found traces of her saliva on the pillow of her bed at home in Rothley and provided that DNA sample to the Portuguese police

Funny they never (?) considered this same saliva as possibly being on Cuddle Cat. Might have saved GM a returnflight to Blighty.

This is very contradictory:

See the problem? Two worlds? Parallel universes? Doppelgangers? How could they be in two places at once?

To add to that, the children maybe came back from kids clubs at 5pm, for tea, after which time the adults (who were still at the beach!?!) played with them. So how on earth did they fit all this in, AND 'bathe the kids' in an hour, given that 'the deponent left at 1800 hrs' (6pm) for a 'mens only' tennis game? I'd go as far as to say the whole sequence of events is farcical. It could not have happened, logistically impossible.
You know, this case stinks to high heaven. It reminds me of those dreams (well, nightmares) - you know, the ones where you are screaming in a crowd and no-one hears you? Or running, running but like through treacle, going nowhere?
There is something very big, very nasty behind this whole thing. As much as I respect 'keep it simple' if this was your average Joe they'dve been locked up and the keys thrown away years ago...
Oh, and the 'translation issues' just doesn't wash. It took time because it all had to be done carefully. What does it say at the bottom of each statement? 'Reads, ratifies, signs' - that means the deponent has ok'd the contents. Simple. The mistakes are theirs - its not as easy to flawlessly lie as people seem to think!

I'm so pleased to have found this! David Smith as I said, on my blacklist, not only for his unbearably superior tone when talking to a mere German person trying to work with the available evidence.

Parallel universes indeed! Thanks everyone - this is a real treat!

And Candyfloss - thanks for the quote - poor McCanns, left to do everything themselves! Even getting the DNA of their errrm - yes why wasn't there sufficient DNA in PdL. We throw the stuff around like confetti every minute of the day - Mr. Smith? Why no DNA in PdL?

They are the McCanns.
They can do anything they like.
They can say anything they like.
If you even hint that their being in two places at once is not possible they will sue you, and try to have you committed to prison.
You have been warned !

For the sake of thoroughness, let's add Kate's version of the same afternoon:

"Together we took Sean and Amelie back to the Toddler Club at around 2.40pm and dropped Madeleine off with the Minis ten minutes later. Ella was already there. Gerry and I had booked an hour-long couples' tennis lesson with the professional coach at three-thirty, and as the courts were unoccupied, we decided to have a knock-up for half an hour first. Near the end of our lesson, as I strove desperately to improve my substandard backhand, another guest appeared, and he and Gerry decided to have a game together.

Having arranged for Gerry to meet the children, I opted to go for a run along the beach, where I spotted the rest of our holiday group...
I wondered whether madeleine had been OK about staying behind at Mini Club when Russ of Jane had collected Ella...
I had finished my run by five-thirty at the Tapas area, where I found Madeleine and the twins already having their tea with Gerry...
Gerry was meeting Dave, Matt and Russell at 6pm for the men's social tennis night...
Gerry left (the apartment) just before six..."

So. Gerry stopped playing tennis at 4.30, except he didn't, as Kate has just told us that near the end of their hour playing (commencing at 3.30) Gerry played a new game with another guest (no mention of the pesky Achilles tendon there).
Who exactly was the 'we' who bathed the children - seeing as Kate didn't return from her run until 5.30, the children were still finishing tea - and Gerry went off at 6 pm to meet Dave, Matt and Russell - except they didn't return (with their children) for another half an hour!
Jesus H Christ - we are really supposed to believe this absolute garbage?
Innocent parents my a**e!

Agreed!
candyfloss, or other Mod, I think all the posts since the addition of Mr Smith's 'journalism' coupled with Gerry's statement, and Kate's, show absolute impossibility to reconcile. I dunno about the night of the 3rd, but judging by the afternoon's 'confusion' its no wonder the T9 wriggled out of the reconstruction! It'd be like something out of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em!
I do think these posts deserve a thread of their own - such glaring inconsistencies, it'd be a shame for them to get lost in a thread -
I would do it, but obviously I don't have the authority to move or duplicate posts.
It'd be really helpful imo if they could have their own thread, if that's ok?

David James Smith was born in south London and has been a journalist all his working life. His definitive account of the James Bulger case, THE SLEEP OF REASON was published in 1994 by Century, Random House. He wrote for the monthly magazine Esquire before joining the Sunday Times Magazine for whom he has travelled around the world writing cover stories, investigative articles, reportage and profiles. It was an article for the Magazine that led to his second book, ALL ABOUT JILL: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF JILL DANDO, which was published by Little Brown in 2002. SUPPER WITH THE CRIPPENS, about the notorious Edwardian crime, was highly acclaimed when it was published by Orion in 2005. ONE MORNING IN SARAJEVO made a gripping non-fiction thriller out of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in June, 1914. It was published by Weidenfeld & Nicholson in June, 2008.

David’s latest book YOUNG MANDELA was published in the UK by Weidenfeld in June 2010. Little Brown will publish the book in the US in December 2010.. He continues to write for the Sunday Times Magazine and has been a finalist several times in the feature writer of the year category at the British Press Awards. He lives in Lewes, East Sussex with his partner and their four children.

“For six months David James Smith has examined the evidence surrounding the disappearance of Madeleine McCann for The Sunday Times Magazine. In this, the most comprehensive — and authoritative — investigation yet, he addresses the key issues facing Gerry and Kate as they prepare for Christmas without their daughter“.

From Ribisl post re the bio of David Smith:

In this, the most comprehensive — and authoritative — investigation yet. unquote.

That would be authorized by Gerry? Since DS tells us he took a briefing from the great man after the Rothley meeting.
I thought he was a journalist, don't they do interviews? As in asking questions?
A briefing is anything but an interview.

Investigative journalism at its best spin

Investigative journalism is a form of journalism in which reporters deeply investigate a single topic of interest, often involving crime, political corruption, or corporate wrongdoing. An investigative journalist may spend months or years researching and preparing a report. Investigative journalism is a primary source of information.

[quote="tigger"]Sideways I came upon David Smith from the Times Online:

The exchange re the McCanns and the baby monitor and the Smiths is in: http://unterdenteppichgekehrt.blogspot.co.uk/2011/07/conversation-with-press.html

I know you have to protect sources, but this seems a very strange
inside knowledge.

unquote.

They had a baby moniter , surely this would have been mentioned when it was stated that the Paynes had a "state of the art" baby moniter , if this was true one would expect KMC to finish the sentence with , but Jane's one did not work very well !!!!

Now I don't know where I read this - but there was an indication that just before the Rothley meeting some of the T7 seemed ready to talk to the police. I'm just wondering if these were JT and ROB. Simply because I now find that this baby monitor suddenly makes a re-appearance.
Did JT worry about her status as a neglectful parent?
Certainly it seems that the group was brought in line at that meeting, but not supplied with sufficient information to make the rogatory interviews even remotely run along the same lines as the existing evidence.

So after this meeting, Gerry briefed David Smith - who is such a good and conscientious journalist that he can't even remember where he got the monitor information.

"
Kate's statement
Together we took Sean and Amelie back to the Toddler Club at around 2.40pm and dropped Madeleine off with the Minis ten minutes later.

Gerry played a lot of tennis on 3/5 despite his injury.

According to those two statements, Gerry was hands on with Maddie on 3/5 – sent her to crèche, collected her, ate tea with her, bathed her, returned from tennis saw Kate playing with her on the sofa, yet when asked about his memorable moment with Maddie on the 3rd…he didnt mention any of these, he mentioned the “last photo”.
You would have thought his having tea with Maddie sans kate and sans the group would be the most memorable thing that would stick in his mind because that was almost pure time with his children.

K&G watched their children take tea on 3/5, then together they bathed their children, yet Kate said Wed, 2/5 was their last happy family day -doesn’t make sense at all. Were they not happy doing all that as a family of 5 on 3/5?

I couldn’t find the waiter/waitress statement anywhere about Gerry having tea alone with his children. You would have thought that must stick out for the waiter as Kate and the group weren’t there..

Why did kate deliberately mention Ella twice is a mystery. She said Ella arrived at the crèche ahead of Maddie; and that Ella left (or was collected) ahead of Maddie, and she was worried whether Maddie would be ok because Ella had already departed.
If Kate was so concerned about Maddie missing her friend Ella, why didn’t she take Maddie to the beach to join Ella and the rest of them, since she went to jog at the beach anyway?

Gerry seemed to be in a rush to join the Men that he left before 6.00pm even though he was probably in the m iddle of bathing the children, knowing very well those 3 other men were at the beach, and knowing very well those 3 could start without him – very strange!

IIRC Diane Webster said the mccanns were having a family day on 3/5, meaning they didn’t join in group activity. Leaving the children in the crèche while K&G played Tennis and Kate went jogging at the beach is hardly family day isn’t it?
